Letting Baker finish the season makes the 2006 season a perfect distaster. I do see Baker leaving now so he can say he finished over 500 in his Cub career and left on his own terms. He's smart that way.

How is his contract written, does he have a clause that says if dumped he will recieve xxxx amount of money more than his initial fee? Kind of like corporate CEO contracts are written

I'm not sure how it was written. It might have an instant out clause once Perez was traded.

I'd be shocked if he receives severance for non-renewal in light of how much he earned over the life of the deal. Its possible, but unlikely, IMO.

I realize that Baker is a lame duck manager as well, but why hire an interim manager for 29 games when Girardi is likely to be available after this season?

Baker hasn't been fired yet. I highly doubt he'd be fired now.

He won't be. But the point is you do it to get rid of him. You don't let the wound fester. Do you think a team should ever hire an interim? I don't see the point in worrying about it only being 29 games, or worrying about Girardi. Girardi isn't the answer to our prayers. And he's no guarantee to come here either. You don't wait to fire a guy you are going to get rid of eventually anywhere, cut the cord, give the job to an interim candidate, lay down some ground rules for his tenure, then hire a full-time guy in the offseason. That's the smart way to do it.

when did they make the choice to play youngsters?

they have played murton and cedeno all year...theriot still can't get past bynum, wo although the same age is not a prsopect for anything other than utility. these guys would not be on the field if isturiz was healthy..

where is pie? or that catcher who is supposed replace blanco next year?

why not dopriak instead of mabry...we are not playing youngsters we are just playing whose left over..why isn't pagan playing center or right?

I don't know what Hendry has done to give some of you hope that he'll hire the right manager for this team. Do you really think he'll all of a sudden fall in love with OBP and SLG? Do you think he'll change his attitude on pitching to contact vs. hard throwers who can't throw strikes? I think Hendry will offer Baker a one-year deal knowing Baker won't accept that. Then Hendry will just hire a guy like Baker just without the name of Dusty Baker.

He's not going to get a guy who likes OBP. But as we know, it's not impossible to win without OBP (just very difficult). It is possible that Jim will hire a manager that is a better fit with what is going on. Somebody who will be less inclined to do some of the worst things Dusty is guilty of. Namely, somebody who is a better strategist, not hard at all. I don't expect much, but there's a chance.

OBP is only half the story - OppOBP is just as important.

As long as Hendry is GM I've given up on the idea that the Cubs will put up an above average team OBP. Or even an average team OBP. But I haven't given up hope for a playoff berth on the strength of a better pitching staff (especially cutting down on the damn base-cloggers of course). In 2003 the Cubs nearly made it to the WS with a team OBP that was better than only 3 other NL clubs. That club won on the strength of its SP, as we all know too well.

If Hendry and the new manager can mold a high quality pitching staff, the Cubs will compete for a WC at the very least.

Very unlikely that he'd receive severance pay. He will have fulfilled his contract and gotten paid what he agreed to. There's no obligation to pay any severance when he simply isn't signed to a new contract. If he were to be fired during his current contract he would be entitled to the remainder of his salary (unless they negotiate different terms for a buyout).

Only the Chicago Cubs would still have Dusty Baker on their payroll at this point. Just another thing to be annoyed with in a long line of things to be annoyed with about this team.

That's abit overdramatic, ain't it, Jeff? There pretty bad, but the worse...nah, I disagree.

Baker WILL be here to the end of the season.

The 2006 Cubs are a sinking team, and their is no way Hendry would release him from his contract or fired him before the season is over. If Hendry did that, he would be in effect giving Baker a life-preserver. Baker is going down with the ship, like a Captain should.

Besides....who would want to manage the Cubs with less then 30 games left, and essentially be a lame-duck interim manager, ala Bruce Kimm?

Can we please stop saying that the Knicks are the worst organization in professional sports?

They may be awful now, but their body of work cannot compare with that of the Cubs.

The Knicks? At least they won a couple of titles in the 70's and made the finals a few times in the 90's.

This has been debated before on this board but my vote for the worst organization in professional sports still goes to the Blackhawks ... by a wide margin.

Ok, but if you want to compare with their body of work-there are at least a few franchises that have been around quite a while and have not won any titles whatsoever. Take the Atlanta Falcons-they have 3 division titles in 40 years, and football division titles were much easier to win than baseball division titles for much of that span. The Cubs since the World Series was established in 1903 have won the WS twice and been to the WS 8 other times. There have been plenty of franchises when you look at their entire body of work that cannot come close to that amount of success.

I've been saying this for a couple months now and will continue to say it. Dusty will not be fired at any point this year. His will simply not be offered a new contract and the team will "go in another direction."

And is it a surprise that the Blackhawks reside in Chicago?

Meh. Chicago has nothing to do with it; being owned by the Wirtz family is the killer.

The Knicks only made the Finals once in the 90's. 1994 Finals when they lost in 7 games to the Rockets in a series that took a backseat to OJ fleeing cops at 30mph on the LA freeway.
