Cubs reliever Scott Eyre on Sunday accused the Chicago Tribune of hurting the team's ability to play by focusing on Dusty Baker's job status instead of the game.

 

"I think if we keep playing the way we played this series, and if everyone would stop talking about Dusty's job, we could all play and relax a little more," Eyre said. "If something happens, it happens, but if everyone would stop talking about it, maybe it would take pressure off of everyone else.

That's like expecting everyone to ignore the elephant in the corner of the room. Dusty was brought here to make this team win, and he came within 5 outs of the WS. The next season, his team imploded in the final stretch and missed the playoffs altogether. Since then, the team under his watch has gone from bad to staggeringly awful. The issue of Dusty's future with this team cannot be ignored at this point by anyone. Sorry, Scott, but them's the breaks.

Putting myself into Eyre's situation I might feel the same. It is obvious he has respect for Baker, I don't find it odd that he is supporting him. It is no secret the team has struggled, the Tribune knows that, Dusty knows that, so does Eyre. I don't think they are trying to lose. Dusty, faults and all, wants to win. I'm sure the team wants to win as well.

 

Saying Eyre took time out from eating ho-ho's and injuring Lee is ridiculous.

In all fairness, it probably is a huge distraction.

 

Even if they hate Dusty, he is for the time being, their coach and manager. Until he's fired, he's part of the team and they have to make the best of that situation. I would imagine a lot of players are torn.

I would be ticked too if I was Scott. I wouldn't want to answer constant questions about my coach. Don't you think all of Bonds's teammates got tired of answering steroid questions about Bonds? I guarantee they did.

 

Who cares if Eyre says this about Baker. It didn't even sound like he was completely defending Dusty. The "if something happens, it happens" part definately doesn't sound like he's defending him. Eyre is repeating what Hendry has said, which is what you should be doing as an employee.

But if Z said these quotes, would you be ripping into him as well? Didn't think so.

Eyre claimed general manager Jim Hendry "already came out and said [baker is] not in danger of losing his job, so stop talking about it. I'm tired of answering questions about it, honestly. … That's all anyone wants to talk about. I went on a radio show, and that's all they wanted to talk about. As players, the only control we have over whether a manager is here or not is to play.

I want Dusty gone. Doesn't appear that's going to happen anytime soon. This charade of "is Dusty going to be fired or not?" is embarrassing and an indictment of Hendry.

 

I'm sure it's tiresome for the players. If anything, it builds sympathy for Dusty. Nice job, Hendry.

That was my first thought also. So basically, this team and the 04' team both are driven to distraction by the media, but the 04' team could actually play.

Since Hendry is too blind to see that a managerial change must be made, it's MacPhail's job to step in. If Hendry doesn't like MacPhail invading his territory, he can resign and the Cubs will be out from under the stupid extension they gave Hendry.
