He never recovered from that error. It destroyed his career, as did the Leon Durham error in '84.

That error, like Durham's, kept the Cubs from the World Series and reaffirmed the curse of the goat.

In truth, the Cubs haven't recovered from Gonzalez's error, either. It was devastating on a level that is difficult to comprehend.

Thats a good point. And you could add Mitch Williams to that list too, after the Joe Carter thing.

cocaine runied Durham's career.

he had good seasons right up til 87, when it all came crashing down. . . .. and a couple guys by the name of Grace and Palmeiro were knocking on the door.

Good luck to Alex. He did have a nice post season run.

If that play had to happen 300 times, I would have wanted him out there each time.

Have a good retirement Gonzo.

Gonzalez actually had a decent season last year. .269 .323 .410

It woulda been a lot more decent if he was at SS instead of 3B. But Piniella's a friggin idiot.

So the "friggin idiot" Piniella should have moved Lugo to second so Gonzalez could play short? Cantu gets benched in that scenario? Or does he get moved to third, in which case it makes no difference because the same three players make up the infield except in different spots.

Well he's an idiot for playing Gonzalez in the first place, but I guess a lot of that falls on Lamar as well for signing him. Huff or Upton should've been playing 3B, but you're right this one's more on Lamar.

Agreed good riddance. I'm sure he's a nice man, but the fact that he got absolutely no scorn from the mainstream media for his error makes me hate him even more. If there was no Bartman and the world concentrated on him, I'd feel sorry for him.

Edit: thanks for indirectly bringing us Matt Murton though

Few will remember his tremendous bat in the 03 playoffs beacause of "the error" but I say good luck to him in his retirement.

Jaque Jones keeps his spirit alive and well, the prince of timely hits, and only timely hits.

Steriods? I'm just sayin'...

Ok, obviously kidding.

I really liked Gonzo- great glove. I actually felt awful for him (as well as for me) when he booted that DP ball.

I remember going to two games in one season, I don't remember which, where he had a game-winning hit. Awesome.

I heard Gonzo was quite the womanizer. Great fastball hitter, but I don't think he ever made contact with a slider. Smooth fielder. But man, what could have been. But he is set for life with all the money he made. I bet he gets bored. Do current players get pensions?

Theres always broadcasting and coaching available to waste his time on.

Don't feel bad for retired MLB players, they got it made.

I think I'd find something to keep myself occupied with for 30M. Money can't buy happiness, but it can buy preoccupation.

he could probably be a fielding/infield coach at some point in his career if he wished.

I remember how hot he started 2002 (2003 too, I think) and I kept thinking what a great find he was.

I'm as pissed at him for the error as anything, but he did hit 3 game-winning homers early in the season that helped us win the division by one game. (I will always remember Geoff Jenkins robbing him of a 4th game-winner in the 16-inning game that CPatt eventually won.)

Enjoy your retirement, Alex.

To me...Gonzalez didn't retired...he quit. He'll be back in 2 yrs, tops.

Anybody else think this "retirement" is abit premature? I'm willing to say...withint 2 yrs...Alex Gonzalez...will be back playing MLB. To me...Gonzalez didn't retired...he quit.
