4/51, which is a better contract than 5/60. Of course Konerko deserved nothing more for playing on the world series but he had some mystical aura to dumb GMs like whichever guy won Orioles GM survivor.

I don't believe you can base this contract solely on last years numbers. You have to look at his career numbers. Can we expect those kind of numbers again?Does he?

I don't think that's the point. He's still better than Konerko so expect his contract to be in that neighborhood. The Cubs don't want him to become a FA and have other teams attempt to drive up the price. I'm sure some teams would be very willing to overpay so the Cubs will want to be generous without breaking the bank. The best time to do that is now.

But Konerko won a world series so he's clutch or something. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see Lee get a lesser contract than Konerko.

Well hasnt Derrek Lee won just as many World Series as Konerko has???

So again...how does winning a World Series = clutch? I mean Konerko was solid during the playoffs, and outside of maybe Game 2 of the World Series, where he hit the Grand Slam, nobody outside of the White Sox had even heard of Konerko. The Sox pitchers were clutch.

He got that contract because he's one of four players in the majors who's had 40 hr and 100 rbi in the last 2 years.

The list

Dunn

Konerko

Pujols

Manny

Big Pappi

Sorry there are 5 in the last two years. I think thats why he got the contract and because hes by far the best position player. Believe me he deserved on the offensive team that they had.

Most people outside of Chicago are familiar with Konerko. 40/100 numbers don't fly under the radar, especially in the post-steriod era. 40/100 will be the slugger's standard again.

No that world series was all speed and SMALLBALL~! Lee just happened to be along for the ride. Konerko single handedly carried the Sox to the world series.

Here's an update on the Lee contract.

Derrek Lee is eager to get his contract extension completed within the next week, and while the sides talked again Thursday, there was still no resolution.

Lee has yet to give a deadline for an extension but said, "Hopefully we can get it done and get it behind us."

Cubs general manager Jim Hendry is expected to get his own extension Saturday.

"He's taking all our money," Lee said, laughing. "We see the priority list around here."

Informed of Lee's comment, Hendry said he would be glad to trade salaries with the Cubs first baseman, who is expected to get about $12 million to $13 million per year.

From the Chicagosports.com article on todays game:

With or without a contract extension, Lee expects negotiations to end within the next few days. "I don't think it's going to go on much longer than today or (Saturday), honestly," he said. "I don't want to continue to go back and forth. I think we'll know something today or tomorrow." Acquired in a trade with Florida in November 2003, Lee had by far his best season last year when he led the NL with a .335 average, finished second with 46 home runs and drove in 107 runs. "We've been talking. I think we're getting close so hopefully it works out," said Lee, in the final year of his contract. ...

From the cubs' side, looks like Derrek Lee has tentatively agreed to a contract extension. They're finalizing it and hope to have it fully completed by the end of the weekend. We're hearing $13 million, maybe $14 million, a year. Not confirmed.

Hmmm...well, if nothing else, it's an encouraging sign that rumors are coming out that he's signed one. Let's see if it actually ends up happening.

Boy, if Lee walks that will change the entire complection of the off-season. Especially b/c of Dope's broken foot.

I hadn't heard. what happened?

Dopirek broke his foot in West Tenn's season opener and is expected to miss at least six weeks. There's a thread about it in the Minor League forum.

ESPN 1000 is saying the Lee contract is 95% done. Unless something major happens this contract is essentially done. There saying there will probably be an anouncement Tuesday. This is just Bruce Levine basically stating his opinion. Nothing official.

What, are they downloading the contract by dialup?

Most likely some sort of bonus clauses for the 5th All Star appearance in a row or something silly like that.

Konerko was pretty good throughout the playoffs. Versus Boston in the ALDS, he hit home runs in games 1 & 3. Versus Anaheim in the ALCS, he hit home runs in games 3 & 4. In the World Series, Konerko hit that huge grand slam that you mentioned.

5 home runs in 12 postseason games is great.

That said, D Lee deserves, and will get a bigger contract.

Maybe a personal chef for road trips?

Usually in a contract like this you get insurance. It takes time for the estimate to come through. It takes time to get the union to sign off on this. Guys like Lee set the market and it's not as simple as him deciding to accept.

The Tim Hudson deal was done about a week before it was announced b/c of those reasons. Meanwhile you can't officially announce it for legal/financial reasons.
