Ridiculous, if you ask me. My guess is Tejada is going no where.

According to the Boston Herald, the Orioles want Andy Marte along with Manny Ramirez and Matt Clement from the Red Sox for Miguel Tejada. Talks between the two teams appear to have stalled.

An executive told the Herald that the list of possible Tejada bidders has grown to six, with the Cubs, White Sox, Astros, Angels and, most recently, the Tigers also expressing interest in a trade. As for the Red Sox's offer, Ramirez's demand for some sort of contract extension, which could involve having his option years picked up at a somewhat reduced rate, hasn't caused a problem yet, mainly because the two teams aren't far enough along.

I think we can put to rest the idea that the White Sox are in serious Tejada talks. That said, if the O's don't lower their demands Tejada will continue to be disgruntled in baltimore.

Chicago Tribune

...So Sox fans can forget any rumors concerning All-Star shortstop Tejada coming to the South Side, a move that would give the champions one of the best lineups in the American League. But it also would cost the Sox Contreras and a minor-leaguer or young starter Brandon McCarthy and shortstop Juan Uribe.

"I made the call [to Baltimore] out of curiosity," Williams said. "Early on, there was no match from our end."

But that raises the question of why the White Sox wouldn't trade one of six starters—Contreras, Mark Buehrle, Jon Garland, Freddy Garcia, Javier Vazquez and McCarthy—to get a player like Tejada.

The answer: You never have enough starting pitching.

"The thing we relied on the most last year was pitching," Williams said. "And one of the reasons why [repeating] next year will be difficult is that we pushed ourselves to the limit [on innings] with pitching last year...

Baltimore (Or Bartimole as 'slammin sammy' would say) is not really in a position to get greedy. There is plenty of time for this thing to spin out of control if they cannot make Tejada happy. Combine that with the fact that they continue to make iffy transactions and Tejada is likely to blow up again. I would think his agent is orchestrating this, so they can expect his outbursts to become progressively more intense (and more often if need be).

No doubt Tejada is marque player but, do the Orioles really think they can successfully hold him ransom for the precious commodity that is pitching? There isn't a team out there, most especially one with playoff aspirations, that's going offer up their No. 1,2, or 3 starter along with other All Star players and prospects. If they're truely intent on accomodating Tejada they best lower their sites.

Tejada may be a talented player, but this looks like a case of a team drastically overvaluing the value of one of the players.

I also doubt Tejada is going anywhere.

Bartimole is definitely in a position to get greedy. Their best player is disgruntled and wants out, but he's still under contract for a couple of years. They don't have to get rid of him, why not see how much teams will be willing to overpay for his services? I think their brass knows the playoffs are not a realistic expectation for '06, so they're trying to hold out for a deal that makes it a little more likely. If every other GM around holds firm that they will not overpay for him (i.e. give up someone like Prior), the demands will be lowered.

I don't know. Clement, Manny and Marte?

Well, let's see: Clement is trash and is grossly overpaid, so the Orioles would be doing the Red Sox a favor by paying him $9 million over the next two years. Manny makes, what... $9 million more per year than Tejada does? I really don't see their Marte request as being as over-the-top as you personally feel it is .

I view it more as Manny and Marte, and then being forced to take Clement and overpay for Clement.

I would think that Manny for Tejada is pretty much an equal trade. Manny is a lot better of a player, but he's four years older and costs a lot more, so that really detracts from his value. The Sox are clearly more willing to deal than the Orioles are, so one would naturally assume that the O's would have to get the better end of the deal.

Just my thoughts.

MIAMI (ESPNdeportes.com)-- Manny Ramirez doesn't think he'll be traded to the Baltimore Orioles, or any other team for that matter. Now he's getting used to the idea of being in a Boston Red Sox uniform for a long time to come.

"There will be no trade, I'm staying in Boston, where I'm familiar with the system and where I have a lot of friends, especially David Ortiz," Ramirez told ESPNdeportes.com while in Miami on personal business.

The MVP of the 2004 World Series thinks Boston may still try to trade him, but Ramirez has the right to veto any deal and wants to stay in the American League. "I know the American League system. That's one reason I don't want to go to the National League," he said. "I also want to play for a contender, and I think with Boston I'm assured of that."

Well, let's see: Clement is trash

Trash? Now I know a 4.57 ERA isn't all that great, but he is playing in one of the friendliest hitters parks in baseball.

In April and May of last year, Clement was 6-0 with a 3.06 ERA. After June, it was still 3.33. It started to nosedive after that, but he had 4 games in which he got a no decision in games where he pitched at least 6 innings and gave up 1 earned run or less. Give him 4 wins for those games, and he finishes the season 17-6. Hardly trash.

He's a solid #3 starter. He finished 34th in ERA in the AL among qualified starters. I'm not saying he's great, but he would certainly make a fairly weak pitching staff just a little bit stronger. Clement had 11 starts where he gave up 4 runs or more. The other 21 were games he gave up 3 or less. That's not bad. Carlos Zambrano had 8.

Home ERA: 4.90

Away ERA: 4.20

Looks like crap wherever he's pitching.

My main beef with Clement is that he's making $9 million the next two years. Relative to his salary, yes -- he's trash, in my opinion.

Improving your pitching staff is one thing, but grossly overpaying for a #3 starter is not the best way to go about doing that.

4.37 career ERA, too. I do feel he was very impressive with the Cubs, and that I can't explain.

You could also argue he went downhill after getting in in the face (3.85 ERA before the All-Star break, 5.72 ERA after), but if you argue that then the potentially of him being permanently damaged goods always looms.

Carlos Zambrano has 30 wins over the last two years. Jeff Suppan has 32 wins over the last two years.

Win-loss doesn't mean anything.

Well, yes it does, but it's vastly overrated and shouldn't be considered in this situation.

No, wins and losses shouldn't mean anything in this equation, unless you want to talk about whether someone is "trash" or not. Clement is not trash. I'm not voting him onto the all star team, but he isn't trash.

9m for a #3 starter seems to be the going rate. Heck, the Cubs pay 9m for their 5th starter. Of the pitchers that got close to 9m this year, I'd rather have Clement than many of them.

Clement had 2 bad months out of the season. The other 4 months, he was solid to spectacular. He kept Boston in a lot of games. Call him decent, call him mediocre, but calling him trash isn't even close to accurate.

Baltimore would be getting a heck of a deal for Tejada by accepting Manny, Clement AND cash.

Posted
One theory I had after watching 2004 was that Clement really is hurt by his asthma in the summertime. He really labored in many outings leading into his decline. He may need to be held to 24-28 starts to maintain effectiveness.

Well this should put us in a better postion to get Miggy if Boston isn't involved in the bidding any longer. I wouldn't mind having Clement back at all I think he could rebound and finally have the big year everyone has predicted since he was drafted.

While the agent for Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez says that Ramirez remains open to a trade, the Orioles instead could deal shortstop Miguel Tejada for Phillies outfielder Bobby Abreu, FOXSports.com has learned.

The Phillies have proposed an Abreu-for-Tejada exchange with the intention of playing Tejada at third base. The Orioles want pitching in addition to Abreu, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

I wish this would just end already. And I'm sure Tejada would be happy about having to play a new position.

If the Phillies get Tejada, maybe we could get them to trade us Rollins. :-k

Rollins will be 27 yrs old. I think he has the same skill set as Furcal who we pursued pretty heavily. I think he could put up the same numbers as Furcal over the next few years.

Lots of people, particularly in the media, seem to be missing this fact. Baltimore does not have to trade Tejada. There's no reason to act with urgency. The O's shouldn't move Tejada unless they're completely overwhelmed by an offer. I think they've played this pretty well.

If I were the O's GM and Boston wanted to deal, I'd tell them that any offer had to include Marte, Lester, a quality shortstop, and very little salary.
