That isn't the only "hard" question I'd like to see answered by Hendry.

By the way, I had a nice breakdown of when Wood started in relief that somehow disappeared when I timed out. The gist is that Wood pitched more innings between August 5th-29th than Novoa, Wellemeyer, Ohman and Williamson.

The first 3 games Wood entered were hopeless no-chance-to-win games where the Cubs were down by 5 or more runs. In that span of the 3 games he pitched in relief, the Cubs went from 54-55 to 54-61.

Matt Lawton was traded on August 27th, a sign the team was giving up, yet there was Kerry Wood on the mound August 29th in a meaningless game the Cubs were losing 9-4. Not that Lawton ever did anything to help the team, but the the team was more than done.

If he isn't ready, and I mean truly ready, on opening day, someone's got to go.

The boneheaded moves this organization has made are beyond belief. Whether it be not giving Choi reps in September rather instead of letting McGriff chase a home run record he never achieved, batting Neifi and Macias 1/2 in a batting order, bringing in Chad Fox 8 times in a 10 game span, bringing scrub utility man Enrique Wilson to the organization while sending Cedeno to the minors, Murton getting basically no respect from management when all he did was hit the ball, etc....

I could go on and on, but it's too frustrating to do so.

Derek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, Mark Grudzelaniek,Eric Karros

Juan Pierre, Mark Prior, Carlos Zambrano, Matt Clement, Moises Alou, Michael Barrett, Ryan Dempster,Jerome Williams, Matt Murton!

Oh the pain!!! Jim you shouldn't have! How dare you!!!

the best part is all the world series trophies those moves got the cubs!

TBCF, the point is that someone who's bright enough to at least take advantage of when guys like Aramis and Derrek are available shouldn't be as prone to making absolutely baffling decisions as often as he does.

Also, the contracts given out to certain players, decisions to bring back others-those are all debatable, some more than others. However, delaying Wood's surgery to have him pitch relief in meaningless games is a decision with truly no defense.

HAHA. Good one. I almost completely forgot that the Cubs organization is a winning franchise that brings championships to the fans year after year, and that I'm completely overreacting.

Thanks for bringing me back down to Earth.

How crazy of me to wish that just once in my lifetime someone with half a brain could figure out how to take a top % payroll and turn it into a World Series Championship for all the longtime suffering fans.

It's amazing to me that anyone could find it so easy to be so disrespectful to a fellow fan of a team that hasn't won a World Series since 1908. The most futile team in sports history. If I was a Cardinal fan and I was whining about having a losing record for the first time in 15 years, that might be one thing. However, I sit here and watch a 9m outfielder kick a ball into the ivy because he's too lazy to pick it up and throw it back in. No punishment from the manager. Just a pat on the butt and a start the next day. I sit here and watch two guys hit at the top of the order who's OBP's are lower than every other teams lead off hitters AVG's. I sit there supporting this team day after day hoping for different results. And on top of that, now I have to be chastized by a (supposed) fellow Cub fan because he hasn't been there long enough to understand the frustration? Wonderful.

How old are you anyway?

It's brave enough that you would chastize other members of our community when you know that is an absolute no-no. It's incredibly brave to do it to a moderator who is in a really bad mood.

I'll let it go this time. But, I won't be so nice the next time. I'd suggest the next time you see the "bag on Hendry" threads, look the other way. This won't be the last one, and you will have no luck converting every member of this community into a happy-go-lucky, nothing is wrong with the Cubs group of giddy people. If you know you can't do it, QUIT TRYING!

Fwiw and iirc Wood wasn't ready to shut it down on Aug 5th and if the Cubs catch fire in August then it's a good move. It's easy to call it idiotic after the fact.

I recall plenty of people calling it idiotic during the fact.

Yes, I recall a few. Nice predictions by them.

It was practically everyone.

I think I may go through the game threads from those days. This is a nice example of a time when the average member of NSBB was clearly smarter than the Cubs.

On one hand people want a title really bad, yet on the other they want to give up the season with 53 games to go. Fwiw Wood was pretty dang good out of the pen. Would have been nice if Lawton did something & Prior returned to 2003 Prior.

I don't agree with his premise AT ALL, but he feels Hendry's moves that he listed outweigh the idiocy of keeping Wood pitching. However:

1) How did he chastise you, at most he was sarcastic? IF sarcasm is a no-no, many of the "old time, respected" posters would be out of here

2) Wouldn't asking someone how old they are anyway be considered condescending, and therefore chastising?

People tend to forget how bad the Cubs were in 02, and that the two hitting stars (Sosa & Alou) had seen their better days....

Choi not getting reps in Sept whenever & Wood getting one more outing on 9/29 are trivial. People were also predicting Kerry would get hurt too btw.

That outing set the surgery back what a few days?? The doctor's said he wouldn't hurt the arm any further. Apparently, all those years of Medical School paid off.

He pitched in relief for all of August. I'd like that month back now that the prognosis of "he'll definitely be ready by opening day" has changed to "he definitely won't be ready by opening day".

Well, that's a different point now. My "trivial comment" was in regard to the appearance on 9/29 after Lawton had been dealt.

Yes, nealry a whole month isn't trivial, and I'd like those 24 days back too, but I didn't want to concede w/ 53 games to go. Wood had some awesome appearances out of the pen.

Not letting your big contract pitcher who needs surgery pitch in the bullpen, which he hasn't done in his career, isn't conceding the season. Even then, we didn't have much of a shot at all. Wood wasn't going to push us over the top from the pen throwing 10-25 innings out of the pen.

Why do people insist upon taking a contrarian position no matter what the specific criticism of the Cubs, or Hendry?

I posted this earlier, but it bears repeating-contacts and decisions on who is signed and retained can be fairly questioned and defended, some more than other. However, the decision to take a guy who needed surgery and waste a month when

-the team was 4.5 back behind 6 other teams

-he was going to give us 1 inning every 3 days out of the pen

-The guy in question is one of your best SP when healthy

was inexcusable no matter what logic you use. A setup guy was not going to take the Cubs from a .500 team and magically change them into a contender. Hendry, Baker, O'Neal and to a lesser extent MacPhail should have known better, and one of them should have stopped it. Instead, they deluded themselves into thinking that the team they saw after 110 games would be different than the one they would see after 135.

That month is valuable, especially when you consider the past, recent history with Wood, our pitchers in general, and their collective extended rehabs. It was a stupid, ignorant and indefensible position, and defending the decision is nothing more than being contrarian for the sake of it. Even posters who are normally Hendry defenders should concede this single point, as it is without any question a move without a legit defense.

What do you want to dredge up history for? It doesn't matter that it proves your point and that you are right. Who could have known Wood wouldn't be ready for the start of the season?
Posted
Wood pitching out of the bullpen last season was indefensable then and still is now. Terrible decision with minimal upside and major risks. We'll see that risk coming true when Wood's not ready to be in the rotation on opening day of '06. A middle reliever who was used in mop up duty was not going to make a difference in catching the Astros or any other team for the wild card.

3) It had nothing to do with you, so why are you even getting involved with this now NON-BASEBALL discussion?
