Since 1962, the year Major League Baseball expanded to 162 games, only three Cubs have scored 100 runs from the leadoff spot. They include Brian McRae (111 in 1996), Don Kessinger (109 in 1969) and Rick Monday (106 in 1976).

I was talking to an optimistic Cub fan the other day who said he thought the Cubs had a great chance to make the playoffs because of Pierre. His reasoning...

In 1984 the Cubs had a quality lead off hitter in Dernier. In 1989, they had a quality lead off hitter in Walton. In 1998, they had a quality lead off hitter in Lance Johnson. In 2003, they had a quality lead off hitter in Kenny Lofton.

This doesn't say anything about the guys listed above, but none of these guys scored 100 runs on a playoff team. I guess we'll see...

Well, if it's any consolation, Pierre scored 96 runs last year and 100 runs in both 2004 & 2003 (108 in 2001) and 90 in 2002. He'll get on base enough to make it close but everything depends on the guys hitting behind him.

With Neifi inevitably getting 200+ plate appearances in the 2 hole, I don't think Pierre will get to 90, let alone 100.

Niefi will often be bunting him over (wasting an out and lowering Pierre's SB total in the process). Should be fun. :(

I've always wondered why the Cubs don't focus on speed more. They've tried power for years and it doesn't seem to be working too well. Any time they've had any sort of decent speed they have done well. You would think they would at least try it. Maybe they have finally realized that speed might help them win. Lets hope so.

Note that the Cubs did not make the playoffs in any of the above noted years.

Just win, baby.

Dusty, is that you?

Speed isn't this team's problem.

Did they have a quality leadoff hitter in 1908?

Didn't Johnny Evers hit lead-off for that team?

Here was his line in 1908: 300/402/375

1945 OF- 1945 Cubs. Peanuts Lowrey - LF (.283, 7 HR, 89 RBI); Andy Pafko - CF (.298, 12, 110); Bill Nicholson - RF (.243, 13, 88)

Don't know if any of them led off, but this is all I can find so far.

Well checking with retrosheet, it appears that Evers hit mainly in the 2-spot with LF Jimmy Sheckard hitting lead-off. Sheckard put up a 231/336/305 line in 1908.

I believe the 1945 lead off hitter was Stan Hack who was an All-Star in 1945.

He stole a whopping 12 bases in 1945. His on base percentage was .420. He scored 110 runs in 150 games.

Tinker, Evers & Chance were all fast guys. The CUBS lead the league in stolen bases with 212 in 1908.

Yeah, but that's the part of the equation we had right already. I think Pierre scores 100 with Lee and ARam 3&4, but I'm not sure its enough to make the offense great. As usual, this year depends on Wood and Prior. If Zambrano is the best starter, the season will not be a success.

Um... Zambrano is probably the best pitcher even if they are all 3 healthy and pitching the best baseball of their lives.

EDIT: I take that back. I thought about it and decided that, in game 7 of the World Series, I definitely want Prior on the mound over Z.

We'll let Z pitch Game 6.

OR we could have Prior pitch innings 1-5 and Z pitch 6-9.

Naw, Dusty would probably have Veres pitch instead.

at least I think thats who he put into game 7 instead of Clement
