What were the fish supposed to do? Keep Beckett? They can't. He's due the big bucks coming up and they can't afford Willis, Cabrera, and Beckett. One of them was the odd man out, and Beckett and his blisters (and shoulder problems) is the odd man out. They certainly can't afford to trade Beckett for another star due large dollars in the next 2-4 years.

it's not the organizations fault the fans in Florida don't show.

you may think ramirez has low odds of making it, but the scouts call him a future all-star.

If the Rangers offered Blalock and Danks, as reported in Dallas, I think that was the much better deal for the Marlins.

Are they going to stick Ramirez at SS right away? This isn't a terrible deal for the Fish. Beckett still hasn't been injury free for a season, and IMO there's a good shot that Ramirez winds up a better player for his position than Lowell, maybe even as soon as next year. Sanchez looks solid too.

I still think the Fish should have gotten more - say, Hanley and Lester.

Well yeah, but Ramirez and Sanchez is still a pair of quality prospects. This isn't Ramirez for Hill and Bruback, which is the impression I'm getting reading parts of this thread.

An under acheiving can't miss middle infield prospect and a good but not "A+" pitching prospect for a questionable third baseman. (and don't kid yourself, at the time of the trade, Aramis was very questionable.

You're right!! The Marlins are throwing in a frontline pitcher and cash too! The Pie-Rats threw in Kenny Lofton.

i wouldn't mention bruback and "A+" in the same sentence.

That's what I was saying. He was good, but not a top prospect.

Pittsburgh let him go within a week of acquiring him. He's not remotely comparable to Sanchez.

I think the Sox made a nice deal for a young impact pitcher and a possible 25/90 third baseman. I'm not sure how these prospects they traded will do but I like how this helps Boston.

How was it better? I think it would have been an ok deal too, mostly b/c of Danks. Blalock kind of slumped last year. The Marlins already have a stud 3B by the name of Cabrera (he's moving back to his natural position with the exile of Lowell). Blalock would probably only be moderately cheap for a couple more years until he become FA eligible. Still, he's a nice young player.

Ramirez is far superior to what Hill was, Sanchez far superior to what Bruback was, and Ramirez far superior to Lowell last year. The money the Sox are picking up is also far more than what the Cubs did.

Why are people dissing Ramirez? He's Boston's Felix Pie. He's only 21, plays a premium position, has a career minor league average over .300, with an OBP around .350-.360 and a SLG of .442. He's got a much better K/BB, is a more prolific and efficient base stealer and has proven himself with more pro at bats.

Hanley definitely is (well, was) the top Red Sox prospect and a top-20 MLB prospect. I was questioning the pitching prospect that the Fish got, thinking they could have done better, but definitely am not questioning the Fish acquiring Ramirez. I think Boston got the better of the trade, but not by much.

Like some others who already posted, I don't see this as that bad of a trade for the Marlins. Sure, they gave up a top of the rotation guy in Beckett, but if it's true that they dumped Lowell (who was horrendous in 05) and his 18m, then they have saved a ton of money. Add that to blue-chip prospect Hanley Ramirez and a very live young arm in Anibel Sanchez and the deal no longer looks so terrible.

Depending on the other moves the Marlins could make in selling off parts, this might not be a bad deal. They could conceivably put together a team with a lot of young talent in two or three years down the road. Ramirez is now penciled in at SS. Sanchez could be a nice young pitcher. They'll hang on to Wellingham and Dontrelle.

If they can get Petit along with other players from the Mets in a deal for Delgado, they'll be well on their way to restocking the team. Depending on what they might could get for Pierre, they could put together a very young but successful team in the near future.

I agree Vance,

Bienfest is building for the future. I think the future also may be the LasVegas Gamblers and a team flush with cash. Unless Loria finds a way to screw it all up.

If they move to Las Vegas, they should purchase all the old Expos gear, sew on an "e'" and be the Las Vegas Expose'.

They wouldn't have to buy it...Loria stole it all and brought it down to Florida with him when he left!

Ramirez is far superior to what Hill was

I don't think so. Ramirez hasn't done THAT great the last couple of years in the minors. He's been their "top" prospect for quite some time now. He's such a great prospect, they went out and signed a FA SS to a 4 year deal last off season. His numbers in the minors compare favorable to Hill's when Hill was on the verge of breaking through. The only place he might have additional value over what Hill did have at one time is that he's a SS, while Hill was primarily a 2B, and SSs have more value.

Ramirez is doing the same thing at the same level at a harder position while being THREE years younger than Hill was. There's quite a difference there.

Great deal for the Red Sox. Lowell is useless, but to get Beckett for two minor leaguers and a PTBNL is fantastic on their part.

I'd take a flyer on him in the 20th round of fantasy baseball.

There are reports that this deal isn't official yet-the Red Sox are apparently a little jittery about Beckett's shoulder (he was shut down for his last start and Andrews looked at him twice last year).

This may not be set in stone yet.

So, if this deal falls through, I'm guessing that the Yankees swoop in immediately and snatch up Beckett.

Thus completing the trifecta of players from that unbelievably annoying Pepsi commercial.

The deal is done and the Red Sox added Guillermo Mota to boot! There will be no more chummy commercials, just lights out for Derek and Alex.
