No other sites have anything on this as of yet.

Padres.com and Padres.scout.com both are talking about it on their message boards. Still nothing other than fans talking about radio 1090 saying the deal is all but done.

Key words there are "all" and "but". When its official, it will appear on something other than a message board.

I know, I know. Still sucks if we don't even get a chance to at least give him an offer.

Can't blame Giles for staying in home town that is a great place to live, getting his $, and returning to a team that made the playoffs.

If true, 3 and 30's a bargain. Guess it's difficult for him to leave family behind and SD's a really nice place to live.

If it's true he's staying in SD, it may be just as well. Giles could have signed with STL before even considering the Cubs. With Sanders ($4M) and Walker ($6M) both free agents, and Roger Cedeno off the books ($1.5M), STL could have easily paid Giles $10-12M per year. That type of dough and the chance to win year-in/year-out is hard to pass up. Let's see if we get confirmation reports in the next 12 hours about re-signing with SD.

On the plus side, if this is true, the Cardinals have no real viable replacement for Larry Walker.

Until they trade for Adam Dunn.

If that happens, I may very well give on baseball.

3/30 would be a bargain for Giles and about 6 million less than what I thought it would take for the Padres to keep him.

That being said, if he truly desires to stay in S.D., it's still a fair share of money.

I guess we'll have to see how this plays out.

That's about the most positive spin to put on it. Thankfully's he not going to St. Louis.

But, you all know that Giles would look even worse in Cardinal red than he does in that horrible sandy blonde Padres uniform, or whatever you call it. Fact!

Though it would be nice, we do not necessarily need our high OBP and 3 hitter (assuming Lee is 4 and Ramirez is 5) to come from RF. Unless we ask, how do we know if Alex Rodriguez really MIGHT be available in the right trade package? That Manny Ramirez really MIGHT approve a trade to Chicago? Etc...

Other options like these will be more costly, and not my first choice, but one thing we have this offseason is plenty of cash and excess pitching in the high minors. Jim Hendry needs to use both, and wisely, or he'll be out of a job at this time next year. And he knows it.

I like Giles as the quick and easy way to solve one of our problems, but he's not the ONLY way to get it done. As pessimistic as I always am, I'm not ready to declare the Cubs' ability to fix their holes as over, if Giles is off the board. Just harder.

And yes, I really feared he could go to St Louis instead, so in a sense having him re-sign with San Diego isn't so bad. St Louis has some money this offseason too, but they do not have the prospect base that we do to facilitate many big trades. If they get shut out of the free agent market, IMO, it will be hard for St Louis to improve their team much for 2006. For once.

Are the Rays going to move Huff to first? That'd seem like the wise move to me.

Crawford

Lugo

Young

Gomes

Cantu

Huff

Upton

Baldelli

Hall

That was done very quickly off the top of my head, but that is a helluva lot of great young hitting talent.

If Tampa Bay traded Johnny Gomes, you might as well just contract them now.

Crawford/Baldelli/Young isn't bad.

If Young plays in the big leagues.

It's going to happen soon, if not right at the beginning of the year. The D-Rays aren't going to compete next year, and Gomes isn't exactly a fan favorite that trading him and not replacing him with Young right away is going to kill fan morale(what little is left in TB).

I meant the rumors about Young and Upton being kept at AAA all next year.

No One can call teh Tampa situation yet. Without a GM or manager its kinda tough to see what direction they take.

Reagrdless, I don't put much stock into these rumors. The "mighty 1090" has been talking about the Giles deal for a long time (since July) and it has been a regular part of the "Werndel Wire" which is a brief segment on "insider info" from one of the talk show hosts.

The fans in SD are split. They want the team to spend money but recognize that the team is in a state of disarray and will likely need to be blown up and begun all over again. They have a good foundation and solid building blocks in Peavy, Eaton (I am still high on him and can't believe he didn't throw game 2), Lawrence (who is getting pricey), Barfield and Johnson. They have too man albatross contracts (Park & Klesko) to made a big splash like Giles and he doesn't make sense for the future of the club.

This station also has a weekly (on Fridays between 1 and 3) with Mark Loretta. He is a great interview and a classy guy. He is also pretty straight when it comes to talking about the team. He didn't shy away from calling Hernandez out earlier in the year and had no qualms about saying he expected a trade involving Burroughs and probably himself. He hinted around about Giles in that he wasn't sure if the ownership would be willing to spend for him.

From listening to the station the majority of the year I don't get the impression that Giles is returning. When asked directly he has been evasive and non committal. Don't give up on your wishes yet.
