That is great news. Jim, get that 4/50 deal ready and give Mr. Vick a call.

Vance, don't the Cubs have to wait a few weeks before Hendry can begin negotiating for Giles? I thought there is a 2 week window after the WS where current teams have exclusive negotiation rights to their own FAs. :?

Right. 14 days after the W.S. As soon as that window opens, though, I'd have my offer ready and pick up the phone.

Would you start at 4/50? I wouldn't. I'd be willing to go there no problem, but I wouldn't start there.

I would, only because it lets him know we are dead serious about signing him.

Understood, but you may drive the price up considerably by starting there. You have to give yourself some wiggle room to match other offers, otherwise you might push him past your drop-dead price.

I think best case scenario is Furcal and Shuerholtz strike a deal in the 14 day period-triggering a trade of Marcus Giles(5) to the Cubs for Walker(2.5)+R.Hill-Wuertz. Marcus in the fold gives us a LEGITIMATE shot at Brian Giles-Sign Giles to whatever he wants-(4/40)

Trade JWilliams+Cpatt(2.5)+Mitre for Pierre(5) and Mota(3)-

Re-sign Nomar(5M) to play SS-

Yeah just replace that with Lofton, and maybe sign Dotel, and, well, I'd be thrilled.

But everything we've heard thus far about what he is likely to be offered is in the three year range and its at or below 10 mill per year. So why not start a 4 years at 11. That would let them know that we are serious and leave some wiggle room.

i thought walker asked hendry to simply decline his option if he didn't want to bring him back.

He did, and everything we know about Hendry leads us to believe that he will honor that request, but Walker is the last of the pot-stirrers left on this team, hendry might want him gone.

We really need to sign Giles to put us over the top. Get Giles, resign Nomar, and trade for either MGiles or Castillo. Those 3 moves IMO would give us a lineup necessary to get into the playoffs(pitching notwithstanding.)

Talked to my grandpa, big Cardinals fan. He said the Cardinals, to his knowledge, were very interested in Giles because he's "one of two servicable OF's available this year".

So uh, c'mon Hendry. Outbid someone for once.

I am willing to bet the Cubs are gonna have a payroll closer to 110-115 this year . I think you overspent on Nomar I am thinking his base will be closer to a 4 million. Drop Pierre and Mota spend the money on Dotel instead and Lofton to keep center field warm . I am assuming you give Lofton a starting job and the chance to play for in Chicago and Baker again you can get him 1.5 million.

Leave Greenberg in the minors for awhile longer and spend some more of that money on another strong right handed power hitter like Sanez.

I'll take that bet. As a Tribune shareholder, it would be very hard for me to see Hendry get anything beyond $102M from the executive management based on a 79-83 season.

Agreed. If you ask me, we will be lucky to get 100mil but that's a hunch.

I think the PR hit the Trib could take for having a payroll less than last year's would be too much to risk.

I say it stays at 100-105M.

The Indians have contacted Giles.

It appears that the Indians, who traded Giles to the Pirates, are now interested in pursuing Giles.

"We've had a couple early inquiries from the Indians," said Joe Bick, Giles agent. "There is some degree of interest there that we'll explore further."

I doubt they'll be a major player. I don't think they'll spend with the big boys, especially if they're trying to keep Millwood.

we deserve a 50M payroll. that way maybe someone will pay some freaking attention to OBP and stop overpaying for mediocre talent.

That's helpful.

From a Rob Neyer chat earlier today on ESPN.com:

"Shalesh (Chicago): I agree with the White Sox upping its OBP. I'd rather replace Rowand with Griffey, Jr. Is that still a possibility? And who gets Brian Giles?

Rob Neyer: (4:50 PM ET ) Yeah, Rowand's another guy who doesn't create a lot of runs. I'd steer far clear of Griffey, though. He's not only injury-prone (obviously), but he's also a real liability in center field these days. As for Giles, I can see him wearing a Cardinals uniform next season. They've got a hole in right field and oodles of money to spend. "

Just because he says it, it doesn't obviously mean anything in a vacuum, but with the exception of Gammons, there is now critical mass building towards convergence on the notion that Giles will be wearing a Cardinals uniform next year. The themes of consistent winner, opening in their OF, and money to spend are being uttered over and over again. At this juncture, I am just hoping that San Diego or Cleveland gets him.

"oodles" is one of the last words I'd use to describe the Cards amount of free cash.

So basically, Neyer is just talking out his rear-end.

Although I do appreciate its use. I think it's a great word, and should be used more often. Oodles. ha ha.

Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Isringhausen, Eckstein, Carpenter, King and Mulder account for $63M. Add another $4M if they pick up Suppan's option. The Cards payroll last year was around $90M. I haven't read all the reports, but I did see a few that suggested an increase to $95-96M range was probable going into their new park. Therefore, many think they can easily give Giles $10M a season, and still have money to address their other needs.

Assuming they pick up Suppan's option....

9 guys, 67 mil, best case scenario, 30 million left for 16 players. Workable

Signing Giles

10 guys, 77 mil, best case scenario, 20 million left for 15 players. Very difficult.

They could get Giles, but that would make the rest of their offseason pretty tight.
