Apparently, Joe Torre has personally called Giles to recruit him for the Yankees.

But even before Matsui finalized his four-year, $52-million deal to stay, the Yankees had begun moving on other fronts. Manager Joe Torre, the team's top recruiter, placed a call to free-agent outfielder Brian Giles on Tuesday; Torre left a message, and Giles was expected to return the call yesterday, his agent Joe Bick said.

It still isn't looking good for the Cubs's chances of signing Giles.

However, 10-12 clubs have shown interest in Giles, and teams must act fast if they want to sign him. "I would think we have a pretty good chance of getting something done with somebody prior to the winter meetings [Dec. 5-8],'' Bick told The Toronto Star in its Thursday edition.

The Blue Jays, Indians, Cardinals and Athletics are among the teams said to have interest in Giles, and the Yankees could be ready to make an offer - a possible reason Cashman was in Tampa to meet owner George Steinbrenner.

No mention of the Cubs there. Hopefully, the Cubs are among the 10-12 clubs referred to, but somehow I have my doubts.
