Petty as it may sound (or is read?) I too, am thankful Giles may be re-upping with SD rather, than potentially seeing him in the Cardinal OF. As for the Cardinal corner OFers, we all know the "smart" Jocketty is going to take a gamble on some re-tread or a Jacque Jones, etc. who'll proceed to have the obligatory career year. Must be a secure feeling to know that nearly every gamble you take will pay off.
The Cardinals can be tricky. Last offseason everyone thought they would decline, especially in starting pitching, because of very tight money concerns. Then they turned around and traded for Mulder at 6.5 mil, who figures to only get more expensive.

I agree. The Cards know how to work the money around and get the players they need. I think the Cards should move Edmonds and get younger, they looked so old and tired against the Astros.

The Mighty 1090 outta San Diego is a solid station. With the exceptoin of Bill Warndell (Philly Billy) they don't have a bunch of clowns like the Score or 570 out of LA. Vic the Brick Jacobs on 570 LA takes the cake for biggest fool on sports radio. The absolute worse. Be happy he's not in Chicago.

This was a Walker/Sanders issue. I don't see how trading Edmonds would improve the Cards. Edmonds was healthy and productive all year. Some people point to a decline because of his average, but I don't agree. Who would the Cards plug in at CF that would be an improvement? Not to mention it would mean turning over our entire outfield.

570 is the worse especially now that they have added MORE blowhards to the Hacksaw show and have added Mancow. Crazy station and all they talk about is Lakers and Dodgers. Unreal how insanely stupid they are to listen to. Lee Klein at night isn't that bad.

One good show is the "Big Show" with Mason and Ireland on 710. They are fun to listen to and aren't pretenious.

The only good show on 1090 is the Coach Katera show. The others are just a whine-a-thon about SD sports.

So, just how done is this "all but done" deal?

What throws fuel on the fire of any rumor these days *cough*dustytothedodgers*cough**hack**cough* is that MLB frowns upon teams announcing much of anything during post-season play.

I mean, they COULD have agreed to huge mega deals and they just can't SAY anything because of pesky Selig. Right?!?!

I think that's accurate. We've heard it several times before. If the deal for Giles is done, we won't know until the day after tomorrow.

That would prevent a story about it showing up on the official Padres website, but not the other sites. How do you explain those? Don't the papers in San Diego have to turn a profit like everyone else? And yet, nothing. Are they afraid of the wrath of Selig also?

You don't like the guys they have added to Hacksaw's show (I can't stand Hacksaw)? I love them - probably because I listened to Money on KROQ and Joe Grande on Power 106. And, most importantly, Money is a Chicago transplant and a diehard Bears, Bulls and Cubs fan.

How should I know? I am speculating just like everyone else.

May be the source isn't one the papers typically use. I recall earlier this year that Bruce Levine reporting that a major deal would go down within 24 hours. It never happened, and no other Chicago media oulet reported it. Stuff happens.

Hwhat? Hacksaw's a bleeping god. Money's alright. Grande's about as bad as Vic the Brick. I'm tired of infotainment radio.

Hacksaw is also often wrong with his rumors and has an extremely annoying voice.

That's my point. The radio report that Giles had resigned with the Padres was followed by a deafening silence from every other Padres news outlet. So maybe we shouldn't jump to conclusions.

Everyone thought the report from The Mighty 1090 AM in San Diego meant that Giles was signed. They started assuming that Hendry was going to have to make a trade in order to get a good RFer for next season. But then there were some of us that said this wasn't over quite yet. That got countered by the argument that no official announcements would be made about any signings until after the WS was over. Well, the WS is over, and there is an article about Seanez becoming a FA on the Padres official website, but nothing about them signing Giles.

Now, it is still quite likely that Giles will resign with the Padres. I always thought it was a bit of a longshot for Hendry to get him. But sometimes longshots do come in, and all I'm saying is that this one is still out there.

The guys they added to Hacksaw aren't sports guys. I guess that was what I was trying to get to. I do like the "non sports" headlines but other then that, it seems that every time i listen to the show they are making joke radio slightly above the stern type shows. I am listening to sports talk, not "entertainment" radio. At least the Big Show (on 710) mixes the 2 well.

Well, it looks like Giles filed because the Padres offer wasn't close.

Link.

A three-year offer of more than $21 million from the Padres didn't prevent right fielder Brian Giles, the club's presumptive Most Valuable Player in 2005, from filing for free agency yesterday along with four others.

A three-year offer in the 21 million range!!!

No, wonder he filed.

But, in the depressing news category...

Among the clubs interested in Giles are the St. Louis Cardinals, who made it known in July they tried to trade for him. The Boston Red Sox also showed interest earlier this month, and although the Oakland A's aren't big spenders, they tried to trade for Giles in his Pirates days and employ one of his best friends, catcher Jason Kendall. Bick also could hear from the L.A. Dodgers, one of six clubs Giles excluded from his trade-veto list four years ago.

No mention of the Cubs there and once again, I see the Cardinals mentioned as a suitor. :(

yes, but we have more money to spend. if hendry doesn't outbid everyone, i will be disappointed.

I think it's about time the thread title is changed on this one... This one has officially been debunked...

We can now go back to hoping that we'll get the only OF worth a darn in free agency (until somebody else signs him).

It's not like Hendry to come out and say "We are going after this dude". I'm not surprised he's keeping it secret, if he is indeed going after Giles. That's one of the few things I like about Hendry, he's a silent suitor.

like the creepy dude in the bushes going through your trash, who breaks in and drinks out of your toilet when you're not home?
