The Cards have oodles of money to spend? Don't they have tons of money tied up in Rolen,Pujols,Izzy,Mulder,Carpenter & Edmonds

Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Isringhausen, Eckstein, Carpenter, King and Mulder account for $63M. Add another $4M if they pick up Suppan's option. The Cards payroll last year was around $90M. I haven't read all the reports, but I did see a few that suggested an increase to $95-96M range was probable going into their new park. Therefore, many think they can easily give Giles $10M a season, and still have money to address their other needs.

Assuming they pick up Suppan's option....

9 guys, 67 mil, best case scenario, 30 million left for 16 players. Workable

Signing Giles

10 guys, 77 mil, best case scenario, 20 million left for 15 players. Very difficult.

They could get Giles, but that would make the rest of their offseason pretty tight.

I actually see them going after a Encarnacion or Jacque Jones type.

So if the Cubs do what most of us want them to do, and overbid a little for Giles, we should be offering more than 10 per. So, if Hendry's willing to make the offer, the only reason Giles ends up as a Cardinal is if he thinks taking the smaller contract is worth the added chances of winning a title, in which case there's nothing we can do about it.

What makes you think this? Not that I doubt it, I'm just wondering why. Cause I WISH they'd go after one of those, but I have little reason to think that they will.

But you know as well as me that Jocketty will figure out some way to make it work. He always seems to approach things with the "glass is half full" vigor; sadly, our guys tend to think the "glass is half empty."

1)They are both good defensive OF's

2)The Card are already set @ the 1-5 holes. Eckstein,Grudz,Pujols,Edmonds,Rolen. JE or JJ would fit well in one of the 6-8 holes for them.

3) spending 10 mil per year on Giles won't allow them much room at all to improve in other areas like BP & adding another SP.

I totally agree with this. They have no reason to out and spend that kind of money on Giles when defensive oriented guys like the two you mentioned works perfectly. Bring back Sanders and maybe look for a lefty hitting corner outfielder for bottom of the order balance. They will still have a good offense. If they sign Giles, they may handtie their budget next year or another year down the road. No reason to.

Its really not Jocketty who makes it work, its his 3 big players who deferred significant portions of their contracts at 0% interest.

Hi guys, here's my first post. (took 2 weeks to wait)

As you can see from my moniker, I want Giles to happen too. Don't know how likely it is we get the "Giles Bros". . (probably 20%), but that would be a DREAM. =P~

Welcome to the board!

It would be nice to see the Cubs get the brothers but IMO I see the Cards as having a better chance of getting them.

I'd be happy with Furcal SS, Lofton CF, and someone slightly better than Burnitz RF. We have the money to get ir done. Our LF has already been giftwrapped for us.

I agree but I would like a 30/100/300 type guy in right. The money is there and since there are not too many quality free agent OF's out there maybe a trade can be in the works.

Plus, if I'm the Cards, I dump Suppan and go hard after Burnett. They will have plenty of offense already, so why not replace Morris and Suppan with Burnett and Reyes?

The Padres have recinded their offer to Giles.

Link.

On the free-agent front, the agent for Padres right fielder Brian Giles said the Padres have rescinded their offer to his client, who will be one of the most attractive outfielders on the market.

Joe Bick said Towers took the three-year offer worth more than $7 million per season off the table last Saturday, two days after Giles filed for free agency.

"What (Towers) told me was that they weren't comfortable leaving the offer out there while we were talking with other clubs," Bick said. "It's with the understanding that they would likely make that offer again in the future. The fact that we don't have a Padres offer doesn't concern me. I'm not saying I agree with it, but I don't run the San Diego Padres."

Towers said removing the offer is intended to protect the Padres, so that Giles can't use it as a floor from which to negotiate with other clubs, which he can do beginning Nov. 11.

Bick said he has been contacted by several teams. The Cleveland Indians, who drafted Giles out of Granite Hills High, and St. Louis Cardinals are believed to be among them.

The article implies that this doesn't mean the Padres don't want him, only that they don't want him to shop the offer.

I thought this was a done deal? :P

How many fans actually said good-bye to the Cubs chances of getting Brian Giles in this thread? And now the Padres don't even have an offer on the table because Giles is so dead set on testing the market. Next time, just chill peeps. 8)

This surely isn't good news.

Hideki Matsui remains the Yankees' outfield priority, but GM Brian Cashman also has started looking into other outfield possibilities and recently called the representative for Brian Giles to express interest in the free agent.

"I've had a conversation with Brian (Cashman)," said Joe Bick, Giles' agent. "He said they are assessing what they are going to do and, obviously, Brian is an attractive guy to them and they are interested in talking about him. We have nothing specifically set up, but I'm sure we'll have another conversation."

Not the Yankees!

Luckily Giles or Matsui can play CF for the Yankees. Unless there's an odd DH involved, I don't see it happening as far as both of them going there.

Matsui would look good too.

Oh god not the Yanks too.

Maybe it's just their duty to make everything more expensive and have their finger in every pie?

The Cub Reporter is reporting today that the Cubs have been in contact with Giles's agent.

At least the Cubs have been in contact with Brian Giles's agent. That's promising in a, at least the Cubs realize he's good, sort of way.

He doesn't list his source and I don't know how reliable his information is, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

His source is the North County Times, a paper in San Diego:

It's an article written by Brian Hiro, and he writes, "Bick [Giles' agent] has also been contacted by the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs, among others."
