It's not like Hendry to come out and say "We are going after this dude". I'm not surprised he's keeping it secret, if he is indeed going after Giles. That's one of the few things I like about Hendry, he's a silent suitor.

It would be completely outside the realm of my comprehension if Hendry didn't want Giles. What is there not to want?

Now that Burnitz is basically gone, Patterson seems to be on the market and Hairston is really a 2b, that leaves Murton as the only outfielder. The Cubs haven't had a "good" power hitter in the heart of the line up since I can't remember. McGriff was alright, and Burnitz wasn't the worst, but a good lefty power bat like Giles tucked in between Lee and Aramis makes a very promising heart of the order. Filling the rest of the line up isn't nearly as critical as signing Giles.

Agreed.

Assume we sign Giles and do little to nothing else with the line-up.

We'd still have a line-up of

CF Hairston/ Pattersom

2b Walker

1b Lee

RF Giles

3B Ramirez

C Barrett

LF Murton

SS Cedeno

Now, that line-up has some holes, but the 2-5 is solid and the bottom isn't bad. Add one more player at either SS or CF and you have an excellent line-up. Giles is the difference maker in this FA class, and I hope Hendry realizes that.

Are you talking about the 5 spot? Because I'd classify Lee and Ramirez as at least good, and you might remember this other outfielder that did a decent job hitting for power a while back.

Oops, I forgot to put lefty in that sentence. That's why I referenced McGriff and Burnitz.

Well, it looks like Giles filed because the Padres offer wasn't close.

Link.

A three-year offer of more than $21 million from the Padres didn't prevent right fielder Brian Giles, the club's presumptive Most Valuable Player in 2005, from filing for free agency yesterday along with four others.

A three-year offer in the 21 million range!!!

No, wonder he filed.

But, in the depressing news category...

Among the clubs interested in Giles are the St. Louis Cardinals, who made it known in July they tried to trade for him. The Boston Red Sox also showed interest earlier this month, and although the Oakland A's aren't big spenders, they tried to trade for Giles in his Pirates days and employ one of his best friends, catcher Jason Kendall. Bick also could hear from the L.A. Dodgers, one of six clubs Giles excluded from his trade-veto list four years ago.

No mention of the Cubs there and once again, I see the Cardinals mentioned as a suitor. :(

I'm calling it now (A's moves):

-Giles signs in Oakland

-the A's, in an effort to shift budget resources, trade Barry Zito to the Atlanta Braves for Marcus Giles (plus other minor details)

-then they trade Kotsay to the Yankees (no idea on details).

-then they sign Randy Winn to man CF for them.

Interesting, they might consider Swisher for CF too.

Not if they care about defense. Swisher was apparently bad in the OF this season.

He was a little below average, but I thought he was a CF coming through the system? I don't know what the scouting report is on him, he and Kotsay looked similar in size when I saw them play at the Jake earlier this year.

Winn would have to be traded. San Fran picked up Winn's option for next year.
Really? I just saw that he was on the MLB.com website as someone who filed for FA.

Giants exercised outfielder Randy Winn's $5 million club option for 2006.

The Giants plan to discuss a long-term deal with Winn, who hit a remarkable .359/.391/.680 in 231 AB after being acquired from the Mariners. His performance was a fluke, but he could continue to put up nice numbers if he hits third in front of Barry Bonds next year.

He can file for Free Agency, it just won't matter if the option gets picked up.

well the "mighty" 1090 had Giles' agent on the air for a segment this afternoon (around 1:45pm). Lots of good info but mostly bad news overall.

The agent (Vick?) stated that the $21 million published was under what was actually offered but still stated that the Padres offer wasn't what Giles was worth. The hosts specualted that it was 3/$24. The agent did state that Giles would take less to stay in SD but NOT a lot less. Basically he said that if it came down to SD or somewhere else and the money was the same, he would choose SD. He also insinuiated that SD would only go 3 years.

Basically the tone was light and the agent was comfortable saying that Giles would like to stay in SD. But he also said that 12-15 teams have shown interest.

Here is the nice part of the segment. After the agent got off the phone the hosts were talking about where Giles would really end up and they narrowed it down to 3 teams, the Padres, Cardinals and the Cubs. Good news for those who haven't heard about the Cubs interest. At least talking heads are speaking the obvious.

Unfortunately, based on your report, it was the hosts who discussed the Cubs, not his agent. That's basically the same as us discussing it here.

Of course, there's a decent chance we're one of those 12-15 teams (although that's probably a bit of an exaggeration).

I won't lie, though. I'm glad to hear that the Cubs were at least talked about. I just don't think it means that much.

Come on, davhern, that is a lot more meaningful than some Cubs fans chatting about Giles. These are San Diego sports talk radio hosts. If they aren't plugged into more information about Brian Giles than some Cubs fans on an internet message board, then something is wrong.

They might not be as informed as some of the sports writers in San Diego, but they should know more about San Diego sports than us, thats for sure.

That is great news. Jim, get that 4/50 deal ready and give Mr. Vick a call.

Vance, don't the Cubs have to wait a few weeks before Hendry can begin negotiating for Giles? I thought there is a 2 week window after the WS where current teams have exclusive negotiation rights to their own FAs. :?

Right. 14 days after the W.S. As soon as that window opens, though, I'd have my offer ready and pick up the phone.

Would you start at 4/50? I wouldn't. I'd be willing to go there no problem, but I wouldn't start there.

I would, only because it lets him know we are dead serious about signing him.

the a's have always SAID swisher could play center, but he's done very little of it, and watching him in right makes me seriously doubt that he could ever be even close to an everyday CF. especially if zito is on the pitching staff.

I think best case scenario is Furcal and Shuerholtz strike a deal in the 14 day period-triggering a trade of Marcus Giles(5) to the Cubs for Walker(2.5)+R.Hill-Wuertz. Marcus in the fold gives us a LEGITIMATE shot at Brian Giles-Sign Giles to whatever he wants-(4/40)

Trade JWilliams+Cpatt(2.5)+Mitre for Pierre(5) and Mota(3)-

Re-sign Nomar(5M) to play SS-

sign AJ Burnett-4/40(9,10,10,11)

Go to War with that-

CF-Pierre(5)

2B-M.Giles(5)

1B-Lee(9)

RF-Giles(10)

3B-Aram(10)

SS-Nomar(5)

C-Barrett(4)

LF-Murton(.3)

(48.3M)

Prior(4)

Z(6)

Maddux(9)

Burnett(9)

Wood(10)

(38M)

Mota(3)-Dempster(5)-Rusch(2.5)-Ohman(.4)-Williamson(2)-Novoa+JVB

(12.9M)

Hairston(2)-Blanco(1.5)-Cedeno(.3)-Greenburg(.3)-Branyon(1.5)=5.3M
