I think that this move might help Murton and Greenburg more than it will hurt them. The part about irregular play will but I think facing ML pitching for just a short span can help. Both of them are smart guys, they can take what they see in the big leagues and use it to better prepare them when they go back down again and then can adjust to the major league game better when they come up for good.

I think this is a conspiracy to break up the Diamond Jaxx. We can't have some dumb ole farm team showing up the big club. :D

All kidding aside, I can't even form an opinion on this, because I don't understand it. Cedeno rips up Iowa to the tune of .377 and gets promoted to hold Neifi's jock. If Cedeno can't strip playing time away from a stone cold Neifi, ain't no way Murton steals time away from hot hitting Holly.

I suppose the opportunity to play in the bigs is more exciting than playing in the all star game for Murton, but probably not if it's just to sit the bench.

At 23, I think Murton's advanced enough to handle it. Adam is likely to be a 4th or 5th outfielder someday, so I'm fine with him as a back up, even now. I think I'd be frustrated if Pie was brought up this early. I suppose the injury was somewhat of a blessing.

In the meantime, I sure hope Corey figures things out.

Who cares about these moves? Dusty will never let them play anyway. I am as anti-Patterson as anyone on this board, but the #1 problem on this team does not have the initials C.P. The initials are J.B., and I can only hope the end is near for the underachieving nitwit.

Clue number one that these kids won't play under Dusty Baker's managerial reign:

“It depends on who we’re playing; it depends who’s pitching,” Baker said Thursday night. “Greenberg’s left-handed, and Murton’s right-handed. We’ve got (veteran) guys here, too. We want to get them in there. They’re here to play and give us a spark.”

He wants to play them, one's a lefty, the other is a righty, but we've got veterans! It's those veterans that have led this club into the back of the pack in the NL.

Jim Hendry didn't cut Macias, so he will be the first man called upon on a regular basis.

This better be the beginning of the kids getting a chance to play. Cedeno, Murton, and Greenburg better get at-bats on a regular basis. Otherwise this is a complete waste, and I'll have lost even more respect for this organization.

I lost all faith in the current regime when Cedeno was called up to not play. I see no reason why Hendry/Baker would treat Murton and Greenberg any differently.

My thoughts exactly

I think that this is Hendry's way of saying "screw you Dusty, we're gonna do things my way now."

Only getting rid of Perez and Macias would do that. Please let Baker be fired. Jim has to know Dusty won't play Greenberg and Murton.

I'm keeping an eye out for a press conference notice.

Why do so many people on this site think Macias is the cause of our problems. No doubt he is weak, but he is the least of our problems. I would love for us to be debating over who gets the 25th spot, unfortunately, spots 6-24 are the problem.

Actually, he is one of the few Cubs who is playing well right now

Good morning. Glad to see the discussion is still rolling along here.

Why do I foresee Hairston getting screwed out of playing time through all of this? The dude can't catch a break. I bet he is platooned with Macias in CF.

problem is, he's not the 25th man.

Actually, I don't think this has anything to do with throwing in the towell on this season. If they were doign that, it would have been Hubbard, IMO, called up as the backup CF and they wouldn't have wasted an option on Greenburg.

Of course, this totally ignores the fact that our management of the 40-man roster has been nothing short of inept for the past 9 months or more.

I think Hendry has been unable to make any solid trades, and this wound up being the only way to hopefully add something to the roster that it desperately needs- guys who get on base (hopefully).

However, I have seen nothing in the 2 1/2 years of Dusty Baker that gives me any reason whatsoever to think that either of these guys will see more than 2-3 at bats over the next couple of series.

This move has been made solely to send a message to the players on the ML team. It's management saying nobody's safe, so shape up or ship out. It's pretty obvious to me. The message may slightly be to Baker, but his time will come if they keep losing. I actually won't mind if they tank the next two if it meant bye-bye to Johnny B. Give the job to Ryno or Grady Little, or someone who cares. Edited by ThePenguin11

I can see this scenario playing out:

Hendry tells Dusty to stop screwing around with Cedeno and play him everyday, and to prove he's serious calls up Murton and Greenberg, and tells Dusty to play them right away. Dusty agrees one on one, then makes the statement he made earlier that "we've got veteran guys here too". Note that this is similar to the statement he had about Cedeno's call up. "He's here to play". Dusty then proceeds to play Murton/Greenberg as often as he has Cedeno (2 starts in 10 games). Hendry then fires Baker for disregarding him.

Unless Hendry is completely stupid with his handling of young players, that's one of the few scenarios that make sense.

But it seems unnecessary to set up Baker for a fall. Hasn't he done enough to merit getting fired without "rookie entrapment" on Hendry's part?

The other scenarios are just as far fetched. Such as, if it wasn't a precursor to something bigger, why not just call up Kelton and Grieve or Hubbard? Or why would Hendry risk trashing Murton's trade value/development arc? Why would he call up to rookies with Baker as the manager?

This move frankly makes little sense on it's own. The only way it makes sense is if it's the first of a series of moves.

Throw in Hubbard getting cut from Iowa and the plot thickens...

Wow, this was something to wake up to.

From the Trib story:

"Patterson had to clear waivers because he has had four seasons in the majors."

He cleared waivers, or he still has to? Corey's still young and as physically talented as you need to be. I can't believe he'd go through with no team claiming him. Is this just Paul Sullivan missing something?

The official transactions page on ESPN.com says that he was optioned to AAA, which I would think means no waivers.

Yep.

Cubs PH Hits-AB:

Jose Macias, 7-31

Todd Hollandsworth, 3-12

Jason Dubois, 3-12

Jerry Hairston, 2-12

Ben Grieve, 3-10

Jose Macias is called upon time and again by Dusty to PH, particularly in key spots (i.e. Monday Night). He fails at a dramatic rate. He is Dusty's go-to guy off the bench and the stats bear it out plain as can be. It's disgusting.

Posted

Dusty plays everyone, Murton at least will get his fair share of ABs. Macias has the fewest ABs of anyone other than Blanco for God's sake, he is the 25th man. In ratios, Cedeno is getting about as many ABs/game as Macias. Macias is not the 10th man people.

What a surprise this morning! It's not like both of them didn't deserve the demotion. I agree with the move - but this season is rapidly going past the point of no return.
