I don't think it's too late for Dubois. He's only 26 and he's had 1/2 a season under his belt. More than likely, he and Patterson will play everyday in Iowa, get their swings back and head to Chicago rather quickly. My hope is that they both succeed in correcting their problems.

And if Hendry hasn't seen that Dusty doesn't like youngsters by now, he's never going to see it. If they don't get a chance to play this is a terrible move. There's no value in letting them rot on the bench. All the youngin's.

34 scattered starts isn't even close to being enough time to fully evaluate what a player can do in the big leagues. But if this is just for them to get their swings back, it's both at the cost of Murton and it shows that he has no faith in the coaching staff. And yet, Sarge is the main hitting instructor for the 2nd year in a row. Has there been any change? Barely. Gene Clines works with a few hitters, but Sarge is basically doing the same thing as he was doing last year. Dusty is still there. If they have continually failed, why do they still have their jobs? Unbelievable.

They may not in the very near future. Without singling people out, this team has failed miserably. Dusty might be paying for it with his job.

One can hope, but do you think Hendry would can Dusty without giving up on the season? My gut feeling is no. If Hendry were to give up on the season, it would only make sense for Dubois and Patterson to start. At least on the surface, this move looks like the opposite, especially since a guy like Murton is being called up to sit on the bench instead of someone like Hubbard. I'm worried.

Here's the Cubs.com article

Hendry on Corey:

"I think it's better that he can clear his head and spend a lot of time working on the stuff he and [hitting coach Gene Clines] have been trying over the last four days, and hopefully it'll click," Hendry said. "For his own good, and our good long-term, it seems like the right thing to do."

Hendry on Murton and Greenberg:

"We're in a situation where, hopefully, they'll give us a spark," Hendry said. "They certainly earned it."

Dubois on being sent down:

"I've got to go down there and work and try to get back here as fast as I can," Dubois said. "It's not a bad thing -- it may be a good thing. I haven't been playing as good as I want to. I'll get some [at-bats], and hopefully get back."

"It's real tough to get timing when you haven't seen a pitch in eight, nine days, and you get that one opportunity to do the best you can," Dubois said. "Sometimes you screw yourself in the ground because you try too hard. You try to make everything happen on every swing you take. That's what's been happening. I've been going downhill. I think this will help it out."

Corey on being sent down:

Patterson declined to talk to reporters after Thursday's game.

Iowa doesn't play again until the 14th due to cancelled games from Dennis. Meanwhile, the AA ASB is also 12th through the 14th. So even if they are up for a cup of coffee and dropped to AA, they won't get to play again 'til the 15th. That's too long for these guys to rot.

1 week isn't "too long to rot".

For a regular player not playing in the All-Star game they get 3 days off. Adding in 4 days before that isn't going to ruin them or harm their development.

Not that I'm in favor of that, but it's not like giving a player a week off to learn things at the ML level is going to hurt them.

Ain't that the truth.

Will the Cubs play the new kids?

The Cubs would've considered calling up outfielder Felix Pie, but he has a bone bruise on his right ankle and will be sidelined at least one more week, possibly more.

Sigh. Nothing about them getting playing time. And considered bringing up Pie? Have they learned nothing from rushing Corey?

With everything I've read/heard in the past couple of days, it definitely sounds like the Cubs thought about bringing up Pie before he got hurt. Hopefully his injury is a blessing in disguise and the Cubs leave him in AA.

Both Murton and Greenburg have excellent plate discipline:

Murton: .403 OBP 29 bb's/ 42 k's

Greenburg: .386 OBP 41 bb's / 53 k's

Both Dubois and Patterson lack that plate discipline:

Dubois: .289 OBP 7 bb's / 49 k's

Patterson: .270 OBP 16 bb's / 83 k's

This is a very clear message from Hendry. He wants the Cubs to take a few pitches!

I disagree. The best thing for young guys is to play everyday. A week is a long time, and for what? To sit on an ML bench? There's a certain value in catching the first pitch and carrying the bags, I suppose, but not a great one.

After reading the Cubs.com article, they are giving Dubois and Patterson a couple of days off and then they are headed to Mesa for hitting work. After that, they'll meet up with Iowa for the game on the 14th. The Cubs won't call them back up right away -- they'll need another week at least to regain their strokes and practice in game what they've been learning in Mesa. So you're looking at the 22nd, perhaps, before Corey and Jason return. I think it's inarguable that sitting Greenberg and Murton for two full weeks is foolish and short-sighted.

Moreover, the article gives no impression of impending doom for Dusty, so I see no hope for Matt and Adam (and Ronny) to get PT. Nope, we'll see more of Hollandsworth-Perez-Hairston.

Heck, try batting Murton and Greenburg 1 and 2 everyday. See what happens. I'm quite confident they'll get on base more than Neifi and Corey have.

Prior and Zambrano would get on base more than Neifi and Corey did. If the Cubs are throwing in the towel, you give the youngsters time to play. But setting back their development by sitting them on the bench is, frankly, stupid. Young, developing guys need to play. Cedeno, for example, should be playing, not sitting. If you bring these guys up, they need to be in the game.

I don't think you're really going to see a Cubs.com article saying Dusty's job may be on the line, especially since no one asked Hendry about it and there's no quote to report. Who knows if they will get playing time. I would just be very surprised to see the Cubs call up two good prospcts from AA just to sit them on the bench. If they just wanted to call up guys to fill the roster, we'd have seen Hubbard and Kelton brought up.

it would have been great to see a once young, promising cf who was rushed to the minors sent down in exchange for another young, promising cf who was being rushed to the minors. good stuff.

You know who would help us speculate?

Bruce Miles.

True.

Hey, Batman's real name was Bruce...

Yes, I'm sure Bruce is very busy but if he is lurking and has any time, his opinion would be very much appreciated.

I found this quote from Baker on the ESPN.com story: "We're getting them up here to play," Baker said. "Maybe they can give us a spark."

And this one from Hendry, referring to the Braves: "You don't have to look any farther than across the way to see what can happen under these circumstances," Hendry said. "It's something we have struggled with for a fairly long time."

Take Baker's quote for what it's worth, but I found it surprising. It may be Hendry putting his foot down.

Really? Then why bring up Cedeno? If you're just going to play Neifi, there's no reason to outright Wilson and promote Cedeno. We've seen this before. Baker did it to Dubois last year and it cost he and the Cubs valuable development time. He's doing to Cedeno, and he'll do it to Murton. Dusty won't play rookies.

He needs to go buh-bye.

Every game that Dusty Baker has managed in a Cubs uniform has been with the assumption that they were in a playoff hunt. Yes, contrary to popular perception, the games in April count just as much as the ones in August. And Dusty has chosen his line-ups according to who he thought gave his team the best chance of winning that day.

I'm not certain that Dusty thinks the Cubs are out of it yet. Personally, I doubt it. But if he does, I wouldn't be surprised to see him play the youngsters. Its all a matter of whether you are playing to win now or win next year.

I'll believe it when I see it, but Hendry did say "hopefully they will give us a spark". I'm assuming he knows that it is pretty difficult to give a team a spark while sitting on the bench, so maybe we can pull some meaning from that statement.
