my question is why is the term "dusty busting" demeaning?

 

Saying that someone is Dusty busting during a debate is fine. That's an action, not a label and it's not insulting. Calling a poster a Dusty Buster because they happen to be making a Dusty critique -- whether or not they do it all the time -- really isn't fine. When you do that, you label a group of posters and lump a lot of folks into one amorphous group. "Dusty buster" is irritating to a number of posters, though it's not offensive like Corey Cartel, or Corey Gestapo, so there hasn't been a crack down. There is a strong preference that folks avoid terms like that.

Is it really alliteration? I've only ever seen anything described as alliteration when the consonants of multiple words are the same.

 

It's not alliteration, but it is assonance -- the repetition of vowel sounds. Dusty Buster.

 

And I seemingly recall, some time ago, a request was made to stop using labelling posters and arbitrarily grouping them together using a potential perjorative -- Corey Cartel spring immediately to mind; I believe that the Dusty Buster label would be included among them, particularly as used in this instance.

 

Thanks Brinoch, I was thinking of the recent "Dunn Detractors," which is alliteration. Dusty Busters is most definitely not alliteration - nice catch, my bad.

 

No worries; I've made my share of similar mistakes regarding grammar/literature terms. Not that it matters, we're not in class anymore.

 

Archaically speaking, I remember reading that assonance, consonance and alliteration were all, at one point, called alliteration. I don't know whether or not this is true, though.

I came up with a label for all those rabid Neifi boosters who personally insulted us non-believers. It was "Neifiends", and I actually used it once or twice. Unfortunately Neifi's fan club scattered like chickens when Neifi started sucking.
