Would this not have been a good chance to give Palencia or Webb a stress free inning to get right instead of Javier Assad of all people?

Might be okay if Palencia was or is right, he's not.

One whiff, one walk, and three hard hit balls for Daniel

I’m asking sincerely- I know he had the injury earlier this season, but he has really gone downhill quickly since his return. What is the cause I wonder?

He was lights out in the WBC in the Spring, and just has been horsefeathers this season

Technically it is if you dont include tiebreaker...

Arizona has 15 games left, they can win 93, Cubs are at 81 wins, so 13 is magic # to get to 94

No it’s not. If Arizona wins every game that means they swept SD. So SD can’t win there games too. Both teams can’t win out and the Cubs only have to beat one of them. Before today it was 11.

Yes it was, its 12 now...

You're doing a magic number as of now, not for future games of what ifs.

Arizona is the team on outside, so as of now theyre the team you go off of.

Theyre 78 and 69 so the most they can win is  93, so the cubs with 82 wins just need 12 more... Magic number is 12

No. If Arizona wins out what is the most SD can win? They would lose 3 games. Cubs only have to beat one of those teams. SD would have 71 loses. If they go 2-1 in that series one team would have to lose 70 games. It is a mathematical certainty one of those teams will lose 70 games. So why isn’t the Cubs major number 10. That would give them 92 wins. They win the tiebreaker.
And even with your scenerio if beating out SD didn’t exist(which it does), the Cubs don’t have to win more games then Arizona, they just have to tie them. So it isn’t 12, even with your explanation, which leaves out SD.

If the Cubs win 92 games they can’t not be in the playoffs. Period! So if they have 82 wins then the magic number is 10.

Nah, maybe officially since they haven’t been played yet but the point of a magic number is to track the number of wins and losses needed to ensure the playoffs are clinched. The games will be played and a winner and lose will be determined. Even if the games get rained out they will be played if necessary to decide the playoffs.

It’s not like the Cubs win the 4th to last game of the season to get their magic number to 2 and say “woah now the Padres and Diamondbacks are tied for WC3. We can’t celebrate yet because they haven’t officially lost the games they’re guaranteed to lose. “

Right, when the games between the Dbacks and SD are played at the end of season, that when you can eliminate from the magic number for those games, and, by then the Cubs could already have it clinched over them.

Right now its 12 on Dbacks and 13 on Padres. Padres played 1 less game than Dbacks, both have 78 Wins

You're doing a totally different scenario then the magic number scenario.

Magic number is combination of Cubs wins and SD/Arizona losses that equals 12 starting today. That number could go down to Zero before those two teams even meet at end of season.

youre just skipping ahead to games that hasn't even been played yet, and just using the scenario of one those two teams will automatically lose at least 2 more games, so the most theyll win is 92 so the Cubs having the tie breaker will just need 10 more wins.

Both scenarios are fine to use, but just a different way of figuring it out

Even using your way of thinking, which is wrong, one team can only win 93 games so the magic number would be 11. But in reality both teams cannot win more than 92 games. It isn’t possible. So the real magic number is 10. If the Cubs win 92 games, and the Cubs now have 82. they are in. So 10 is the magic number for anyone who has any idea of what they are talking about. I don’t care what MLB says it is.

Question...

Do you dislike the Sox or Sox fans enough to root for the Cardinals this weekend so the Sox can lose ground to Cleveland and Toronto? 😅

Normally yes, unless the cardinals were a threat to the Cubs. But earlier this season I bet the Sox to make the playoffs at 3-1 odds. So I am rooting for the white sox. And I have 2 Sox on my fantasy team. So go Sox. Score 15 runs tonight.

Can you think for yourself??? Come on chibear. Dbacks have 69 losses, so the most they can win is 93. Cubs have 82 wins. If they win 11 they have 93. So why wouldn’t the number be 11? Even if they didn’t play SD why wouldn’t it be 11? Cubs win tiebreaker.

Watching the condensed game and I forgot how bad the Pirates are defensively. Also shows how good the cubs are defensively compared to everyone else in the league.

kinda feel like the phillies need to lose the chris sale v aaron freaking nola matchup if this is going to be a really productive weekend.

Braves just tied it in the bottom of the 9th and have a runner on 2nd with 1 out

Its not about thinking for myself...

Like I said you can look at it your way and use the tie breaker or you can  play along with the whole magic number way of doing it.

It doesn't consider tie breakers, it just goes by how many games can be won by the non playoff teams.

So, the OP who posted 13, he was technically right in the spirit of using the magic number way of elimination.

Its 12 now, Cubs can win 6 in a row and Padres can lose 6 in a row and its over, and that SD AZ series and the tie breaker means nothing to the Cubs.

The broadcast today said he's been really bad against lefties this year, they're hitting like .395 off him.  Probably needs to get that splitter working well.  Otherwise I personally don't know.  Maybe location issues and just generally not sharp with his pitches yet?

But the magic number wag if doing it is wrong. Hiw are you defending it? Even leaving out the second team, the most Arizona can win is 93 games. cubs have 82 AND WIN THE TIEBREAKER. so 93 wins is enough. You are arguing based on a flawed stat. To beat out Az they need 93 wins. Magic number is 11. And that doesn’t even count the fact that either Az or SD has to lose 1.2 or 3 more games. Which lowers the magic number.
