Edit: I'm being told the DBacks and Padres are actually 3.5 games behind the Cubs, but whatever, 3 behind in the loss column

Looks like the DBacks are 3 back of the Cubs and the Padres are 3.5 back.

Cubs have 16 games left. If the Cubs go

8-8, Ari would have to go 12-4 and SD 13-4 to pass us.

Also keep in mind, SD and Ari play in San Diego to end the year so that's three guaranteed losses.

Still play Pitt, Cincy, Mia and a Boston team that might have nothing to play for in the final series. Just don't tank and they'll get in. Yes, I'm sure I said that in 2023 when they did tank.

I am really getting tired of bum ass relief pitchers getting to come in for 5-10 minutes and utterly destroy an otherwise fantastically played baseball game by all else involved. Just defeats the entire point of everything. You can’t enjoy high effort and good plays because you know some horsefeathers parasite is warming up in the pen the take a steamy dump on the concept of competitive sports. Not even necessarily the Cubs exclusively (obviously the bullpen is putrid and should have Hoyer looking for a job) but every night I turn on a game and sooner or later some dickhead who either throws 100 with no location is walking 10 guys home or throws 79 and gets nuked by all 9 hitters is coming out of the bullpen to completely destroy what had been a fantastic game. Idk what can be done, or if my perception is skewed by following the worst pitching staff in baseball currently, but MLB needs to find a way to end the reliance on relief pitchers and keep starters healthy and throwing 7-8 innings, because its just a garbage product. Jacob Webb and co. are in the major leagues and people talk about expansion of the league. What a joke.

Pete and Seiya not coming through with 2nd and third one out was ultimately the difference. Latroy Webb is a comedy act at this point, the offense needs to come through there.

This feels oppressive and shaping up to become the newest chapter in Cubs September collapses.

Injuries or not, there’s not one arm developed by the organization in Iowa that can fill in on the ML roster and be an upgrade over any of these -.1.5 war pitchers like Thornton or Theilbar. It’s so bad that they’re carrying 3 inning eaters.

Besides the bullpen blowups.  Shaw is the dumbest mother horsefeathers who ever played for the Cubs.  I hope his ass is gone in the offseason.

Yes.  I would expect some successes but the disparity in number between Cubs and Brewers is so glaring it cannot be downplayed.  We are competing with this team directly every year and in order to compete we spend twice as much and still aren’t on their level.  We are spending that money to try to make up for the lack of success at lower levels.

They’ve drafted 4 pitchers in the first 5 rounds from 23-25 while spending $490 million on 3 infielders plus contracts to Suzuki and Happ, with a higher AAV than any free agent pitcher outside of ‘s player option. 
The consequences are on full display. During this competitive window. 

I prefer investing more on the position side of things but there should be a lot more balance whether we’re talking free agent signings or drafting.

Ayers, Alcantara, Triantos don’t help this team like an equivalent pitching prospect. I know there’s nuance to this but they don’t have an equivalent bullpen arm and the guys they flipped for Cassie and Mo aren’t working out. 
 

And finishing in second place with 95 wins because the brewers win 101 doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the fact that they’ll probably finish 86-88 wins and still an incomplete team. The Brewers are proven paper tigers.

There’s no question that PCAs MVP season and all the fun from June 11th-August 31st was just buttering us up for more disappointment. It’s what the Cubs do.

Then who, there's no one else to turn to, have to hope one of these clowns can put together a few good outings.  Before I was asking for a good week I know now that's impossible.  I'm thinking a good outing - I believe this is doable.

They won’t. The failure of PCA and Seiya to add on insurance runs with 2nd and third is what needed to happen and they failed.

Sports can do that to you. They can make a good day great, and a bad day terrible. But I enjoy being invested for the sense of community. Just my two cents but the baseball community, here, PSD, and elsewhere that I have been able to cultivate and be apart of has been really fun. And if sometimes I have to get annoyed because some human I've never met let another human I've never met hit the ball very, very far...feels like a small price to pay.

That said I have learned never to get overly upset any more. Young me was more emotionally invested on every pitch. Generally speaking it happens very few and far between now. All things in moderation.

Right now the gap in pitching between the Brewers and Cubs appears large, is it not true, at the lower levels, Cubs system may soon pop with pitching?  Iowa' a wash, don't really take any of arms there into account, various phases of re-habbing veterans, failed prospects, etc.

Hard to tell. The hope is "yes" but we're probably in the baby-steps of that process. Tyler Zombro is on year-two in the organization, but really his first real year of having authority outside of "a guy in the room". He was heavily invested in the draft this year where the Cubs took 15 arms. Pitchers, however, rarely get run their draft year (to lessen the load) so we haven't seen most of these guys.

We have seen a few of them pop up and they look promising! That's well before winter workouts, labs, etc. really work on their changes. Cade Townsend is self-reporting throwing two mph faster with lowered arm slot, too. 

But we also probably won't see the fruits of this for a few years. A few drafts. Most of these players will not develop and it's the nature of the beast. But I can say that it felt like a different type of draft with who they went after and I'd imagine that is heavily due to Zombro. For the orgs sake, they really should hope this is the guy. I can tell you the Cubs weren't the only organization interested in giving him a lot of runway, and is why he was promoted so quickly.

I'm pissed at myself for not betting on a Churio HR after that walk, it was so predictable. Live betting on the other team anytime the Cubs have a lead of 3 runs or less is free money.

And it took the Cubs going 5-11 in those 16 games to miss the playoffs by a game. 7-9 isn’t great but it would have gotten them in.

Is 7-9 realistic with the current roster? Even 5-11 seems like wishful thinking now.

Yes. Now all of a sudden the roster sucks? Come on. They have lost several troubling games, but to suggest they can’t win 7 of the next 16 games because their roster isn’t good enough is ridiculous. Do they have a roster of a team that goes 70-92? I mean seriously. 
That said, maybe they don’t do it. Maybe they get caught. Maybe they do go 6-10 to finish the season and miss the playoffs. Still doesn’t mean their roster as presently constructed was only good enough to win 60-70 games a year. It just means they choked. It is very realistic to expect a team with this roster to probably win 9 of the last 16 games, tbh.
