I find it best to watch the Cubs with a 3.5 run handicap. If they lead by less than 4 runs the score is basically 0-0 because the bullpen is guaranteed to give up at least 3.

They seem to go right at him with fastballs and don’t give him anything soft to hit in the strike zone.

At least the Padres lost to finish their road trip at 1-5. 
The two teams that both need to get hit to catch the cubs are respectfully 2-7 in their last 9(Padres) and 5-6 in their last 11 (Dbacks) Both are 5 back with 20 to play AND lose a tiebreaker to the Cubs. Cubs are going to make the playoffs. The key isn’t have some confidence in a few relief arms. Right now that is a hard thing to do with any of them.

The only guy I remotely want to see come out of that bullpen is Civale.  All the others are a 3 run bomb or a screaming double in the gap with runners on that they walked.

At this point I agree with you. But there is time for a few guys to right the ship. And maybe someone like Assad ends up a playoff pen arm. Once the playoffs start all roles can be up for grabs. If they can get good starting pitching and find a few guys between now at the start of the playoffs, they can still win in the playoffs. Main pen guys might be Civale, Assad and Peterson. Maybe they get help from a pitcher rehabbing or Wiggins. Because they are pretty locked in as a playoff team the last 20+ games should be used to find some pen arms to count on. Use Civale or Assad to close. Bring up Miller and Wiggins. It can’t hurt. Might not help, but it can’t hurt.

It's like everyone went to chit at the same time, I don't trust anyone in the pen right now.  It's scary.

I agree with this. But what people have to realize is what is happening now doesn’t necessarily have to be what is happening the end of this month. We, as fans, react on the spot and judge guys based on recent play. Just a month ago most posters hated Taylor, as an example. That judgment was after about 13 AB. Pen arms are extremely fickle. Especially the arms in the Cubs pen. Pitching poorly now doesn’t mean pitching poorly a month from him. Yes, the or. Is very scary now. And there is a good chance it would be much better the end of the month. But there is also a chance they can figure something out where they have 3 or 4 arms they have some confidence in.

Let’s not give up on Palencia.  He was out a long time and our manager inexplicably put him into high leverage spots way too early.

Exactly and, there's no reason whatsoever, that guys with stuff to dominate - Palencia, Zerferjahns, Cabrera -can't get hot for a few weeks in the postseason. We've seen such things time and again, there's no law against some of these guys doing this for the Cubs.

They need Swanson back and then their starters to pitch well. And if a few pen arms get hot they could be very dangerous. I agree with the guys you mentioned, but it doesn’t matter to me if it is Civale, Assad, Miller, or any number of other options as well. Pretty sure last year in the WC round everyone was fawning over the Padres pen. If I remember correctly, the Cubs pen did just as well. It happens!!!!
