Imagine being Craig Counsell being courted here as the missing piece for the Cubs and credited as the mastermind behind the Brewers success. He takes massive money to come here only to see the Brewers seemingly get even better without him and consistently own his team.

Man, we gotta stop with the “Cabrera could be the relief ace we’ve been missing” thing. I know it’s September and the trade deadline has come and gone and every single reliever on the active roster stinks so we can only pin hopes on guys coming back from injury but based on everything we’ve seen from Cabrera this year, he won’t be the answer either. He’ll just be more cannon fodder.

Buddy, nobody actually believes this. I think we all realize that our reinforcements are all based on hope and not reality.

it’s also because we’ve all watched these loser ass relievers suck for weeks so at this point we’re just like “show me somebody else.”

at this point shelby miller is the reliever I trust the most just because I haven’t watched him give up moonshot homers for the last two months.

Last 9 appearances by Assad, as he toils in Iowa in order to keep these garbage relievers on the roster, costing us games and playoff positioning:

yes I know he pitched several innings 2 days ago and can’t come up without an injury. And he’s probably not the savior. But it’s stupid that he’s in Iowa

Cubs pitching ranks under Jed (fWAR):

29th

27th

10th

17th

19th

30th

Outside of 2015 and 2016, the Theo/Jed Cubs never really figured out pitching did they?

not ironically the 2 best years we had during that span were…2015 and 2016

So besides Assad, two guys coming off TJ, a guy who has been consistently awful, and a middling journeyman. Right on.

I mean,  what else do they have to hope for to get something from that bullpen

Lol

The biggest difference between the teams is the bullpen

I mean, they are bottom barrel pitching; that’s an entire leg of the stool gone.  It’s great to have such an amazing offense and defense but there’s no world where this team competes in the playoffs with a staff full of fluff.

Cubs have to slug their way to the playoffs. Even then, it might not be enough.

aren't their playoff odds up over 99% now?

Thats why i always joked about Hoyer signing Murphy as the next manager. It starts with Hoyer, he cant build a sustainable winner. Hes trying so hard to emulate the brewers but that org is running circles around Jed at a fraction of the payroll.

Without Swanson the defense went from historically great to very good. Very good won’t cut it with these arms. There’s been a number of outs left on the field. Maybe I’m overrating him?

They’ve blown, 4 3-0 leads and multiple 2 out 9th inning 4-2 leads in a span of 11 games. In their last last 8 non shutout losses, they haven’t scored under 4 runs and are scoring at a 4.75 runs/game clip

It’s shocking that the bullpen went as  long as it did before imploding.

Theo's theory was "draft bats, sign pitchers"

Why does there have to be an injury for him to come up? I think, hope, he comes up to make the next start Imanaga is supposed to have. They can cut Ferguson. If Shota does pitch against Miami, they can’t let Imanaga start against the Brewers, so maybe Assad then, if not later this week. He doesn’t help the pen because he probably should start. As for the pen, who knows. They are imploding. They  have to change things up. As someone said, probably won’t be the answer, but they have to do something. Maybe Civale gets a more prominent roll. Maybe Webb isn’t done, he just has a couple of blown saves. It happens. Then they have to hope Steele, Milner, Cabrera, Wiggins, Miller or Holloway (not all of them, but some combination) do make it back. Come the playoffs Assad can go back to the pen. Maybe Peterson is the 4th starter. It isn’t ideal by any stretch of the imagination, but what they are doing now isn’t working.
