Civale really bailed them out yesterday after Shota's poor performance.  Pretty rare to have the entire pen save one guy available the next day after only getting 2 IP from the starter.

Huge series . Arizona is the team that can take the Cubs completely out of the playoffs .  Milwaukee is too good , Cubs won’t catch them . Phillies are charging hard for the 4 seed now and SD is just 4 back of the cubs .

Arizona is 6 back . Need to win this series and if somehow they could sweep , it would basically take AZ out of the picture .

i haven’t looked at the September schedule but i know the Cubs have 7 againts Milwaukee and 3 againts Boston . Would be nice to have a good lead over AZ starting September

This series is giving too many 2023 late season vibes.  I'm still scared from going 1-6 against them down the stretch allowing them to make the playoffs over us by 1 game and then them going to the World Series.

Gallen, who's on the IL, and Kelly have been really bad, weren't they a big part of 2023?

E-Rod's rocking some sort of Assad devil magic where he's outperforming all his peripherals by at least a run and a half.  Pfaadt, after being one of the most prolific FIP-laggards in the league his first two years, appears to be getting his makeup from the baseball gods.

This should be a series where runs are there for the taking.  And with Marte out their lineup's not super scary either.

Mainly just don't let Corbin Carroll go nuts and you should be fine.

Really need to get a good start out of Gausman tonight,  6+ inning of 3 runs or less would be ideal.   Cubs are going to need him in September if theyre going to hold onto the 1 seed or have a miracle to catch the Brewers

This doesn't add up.

The Cubs are 6 behind Milwaukee, 6 ahead of Arizona. If there's no way for the Cubs to catch Milwaukee, there's no way for the D-Backs to catch the Cubs.

The Cubs are 2 games behind their Pythagorean expectations. The Brewers are expected to be one game better and the D-Backs are expected to be 3 games worse. The Brewers have a +161 run differential, the cubs a 115, Arizona, +9.

Sooo... the Cubs *should* be 5 behind Mil and 11 ahead of Arizona. Projections suggest Milwaukee and the Cubs will finish out a little better than their current win percentage, and that Arizona will finish out around .500.

You really have this backward.

The one thing you have right is that the head-to-head games matter. The Cubs have 7 head-to-head matchups remaining with Milwaukee. If they could "basically take AZ out of the picture" they could just as easily reel the Brew Crew back in.

What is likely is that Milwaukee and the Cubs remain on their current top 5 team in baseball trajectory and that AZ remains slightly above average and just out of the playoff picture, regardless of the outcome of this particular 3 game series.

Winning the division against a good Brewers team would be a very satisfying thing.   It would also be very satisfying if we could stomp the Padres again in the playoffs and watch that Machado cry about it again.

Eww I blocked that out.

I'm not afraid of them.  Every team in the NL can suck it.

We swept them at Wrigley earlier this year. I can't remember a single thing about those games.

I remember Gallen and Kelly sucked.  That's pretty much all I remember.  Gallen in on the IL, though.

I keep an eye on the # of games back in the division but the Wild Card is more likely/important and things are far from sewn up.   Cubs have a chance to drive a stake in the heart of a Wild Card hopeful.  Take it.

It looks like the D-Backs are walking into this series with their bullpen pretty gassed.

They used 6 relievers yesterday, and GInkel and Clarke have pitched twice in the last three days.

Their rotation is almost as decimated as ours was prior to the deadline, and Marte drama is still fresh. It looks like they are due to lose some steam.

Therefore, I predict they sweep us.

Not gonna make it for this one. Hopefully I wake up to good news.

I had a pretty physical day at work, so I'm pretty beat. I'm sure I'll pass out around the 6th inning

Watching llws Alabama/Pennsylvania,  awesome game in extras now.

Alabama has a girl pitcher Kinley Rasmus, her dad Cory pitched for Braves and Angels, Uncle Case that pitched in minors, and another uncle Jeff Mathis caught for Angels.

She can pitch, hit, and plays awesome
