This is the correct and only answer.

If i am Jed or any other GM just prepare for 2028. Don't blow away your prospects. Hand the trophy to LA. Cubs should just hope the Brewers get the #1 seed so they have a chance to reach the LCS.

I doubt it. The Tigers just, for whatever reason, really liked this package. If you ask me, I think they got a little tunnel vision on "MLB ready SP" and over rate River Ryan's value because he's MLB ready and can step into a rotation tomorrow. They were never getting Emmett Sheehan, and this was the next best "ready" SP they had to offer (the Brewers have a lot of younger prospects but no arms ready like Ryan, for example).

Should we consider the idea that no other teams were willing to beat this package (brewers, cubs, etc) and the tigers were just tunnel vision on getting out of the last $10m-$12m of the deal?

I know FG put out that article about how Milwaukee or Tampa needed to trade for him, but their business model somewhat relies on cost suppressed players filling spots at the major league level. If I’m the GM of one of those teams, the goal is to make the playoffs every year and roll the dice as many times as possible, and they’re both already pretty much guaranteed spots. A big market team, like the dodgers or some other big city team, hypothetically, should not have to operate like that.

The Brewers and the Rays also get added benefits of draft picks and safety from being bad. If the Dodgers are going to leverage their finances, these teams need to somewhat leverage their ability to continue to develop and add more talent in the draft.

I think if the Brewers are too afraid to trade prospects like Luis Lara for A Skubal/Miz 1-2 punch in the playoffs in 2026, than I think they're going to struggle to ever really put themselves in the best spot for the playoffs. If they think a cheap trade for Freddy Peralta is ultimately better, than I think they're missing a real opportunity. Ohtani is ailing. You already have the best RHP in baseball and a handful of really fun prospects even if you trade some...go for it. Do it now.

As of now, I'll assume that the Brewers could have and realistically, should have had an offer to beat that. If they did and the Tigers took this one? Well, then I'll be a lot more kind to the Brewers in that respect. Teams sometime value prospects weirdly and if the Tigers just love themselves some River Ryan...there's only so much you can do there.

Remember when the Yankees were "buying championships" in the 90's and then they've won *checks notes* exactly one title in the last 25 years?

Was Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter getting paid $2 Million dollars in salary so they can use that money and spend it on other players?

It doesn't matter. They were "buying the best players" and had no cap. It didn't last.

I mean, Toronto should have beaten the Dodgers last year. Baseball isn't college football where one team can just curb stomp their way through the competition

Deferred money is not some weird cheat code. The dodgers need to put aside the present value of all of those contracts into a separate account, and it’s reflected as such for luxury tax purposes. The players all have plenty of smart advisors telling them what these contracts are actually worth.

I'm glad that people like you think the way MLB is operating is okay because Toronto "should have" beaten the Dodgers. It doesn't matter. Brewers had a great season last year, and the Dodgers embarrassed them in the NLCS. The Dodgers don't even have to pitch Snell and Glasnow. As long as they're ready for October, who cares.

Did Toronto played great in the WS in October? Yes, but even they played great, and the Dodgers, to me didn't play that well at all, still wasn't enough.

who gives a horsefeathers if the dodgers got skubal...the organization actually cares about winning. if they're cool with the tigers accepting some turbodogshit minor leaguers for a cy young winner, so be it.

salary caps are wage suppressors and anti-union. horsefeathers the salary cap.

We will get a handful of "we tried" rumors today of what Milwaukee was offering or the Rays and I have a feeling I'll end up, personally preferring those offers (I don't love River Ryan). But my strong assumption here is Harris got stuck on the pitcher and went this way because of it.

Why is Ryan so old in AAA? Late bloomer or did injuries derail him?

He's had a weird career. Drafted by SD in the 11th round out of a small school in NC. Played infield in college as well as threw a little, transitioned to a two-way player as a senior after being an infielder only, essentially. Traded to LAD in a small trade for Matt Beaty. TJS in 2025.

Long route as he learned the position and missed significant time with injury. More injuries now. Big time stuff, however.

Well, the "good" news is if Milwaukee gets the best record (they currently have it) and the Cubs stay in WC1 they couldn't play LA in the LDS .

Yea, but i kinda doubt Milwaukee will stay ahead of the Dodgers now 🤷

If the Dodgers don't win are you guys going to pine for a salary cap?

If we can't win I really want a Brewers vs Rays World Series so fans at least have to do the "well that just happened one time" horsefeathers while arguing small market teams can't compete

The owners have a history of stuff like this. If you told me there was some informal, not on paper (plausible deniability!) agreement between the owners to collectively take a dive on payroll and player acquisition so the Dodgers could go nuts and try to swing public support further behind a salary cap, I would absolutely believe it.

Peralta going to the Rays

Another one off the list

Cubs been needing pitching help since forever,  Hoyer gonna wait to get the cheapest deal with whomever left an hour before deadline ends.

I don't really think missing on Peralta was a big deal. He has not been at all good this year.

Maybe they're trying to get more than they got at last year's deadline. This time they can trade for a warm corpse and a casket

Probably not but if you go by reporters rumors he was a guy they were very interested in 🤷

Which is why I never read into these rumors much

Hoyer made a trade....

The Cubs have traded Jameson Taillon to the Blue Jays for a player to be named or cash considerations.

I hate that there are two threads talking about the same thing

I thought the other one was just for random speculations, which is why I made this one for actual trades 🤷
