I like both pitchers, but your give is excessive. Empty the farm system for 1/3 a season for Ryan and then maybe, if they play in ‘27, one more year? He will cost, but not emptying the farm. And no way do you give up Shaw for Gray. That is a crazy overpay.

It's definitely a risk.  But if they made a move like that (for Ryan), they'd have to aggressively try to extend him.  He's got elite breaking + off speed stuff so I think he'd age gracefully.  IMO, he has to be the priority target.

If the Cubs dangled Shaw for Gray, they can probably get a reliever back in that package or a secondary piece.  I've liked Whitlock for years.  Without Shaw, I'm not sure what the Red Sox would be interested in.  They have a GM who's trying to save his job and they need MLB ready talent in the worst way.  Maybe Ramirez?  They'd have no interest in an OFer.

I align with getting a playoff starter and high lev (closer 1B) relief arm as well.  It's too bad Michael Soroka didn't hang around longer, cause whatever Jed/Carter saw in him it's showing out this year:

15 GS

82.0 IP

3.07 ERA, 3.95 xERA

2.94 FIP, 3.60 xFIP

18.6 K-BB%

1.09 WHIP

With regards to performance, this would slot just behind Ben Brown, but well ahead of the rest on our rotation.  All this for $7.5M.

All this to say, if Jed/Carter sign someone and I'm like, "Huh?!" I'm gonna give 'em the benefit of the doubt.

Drew Anderson on the Tigers might be this year's version.  Came back to the US after a stint in the KBO.  He's been pitching in multi-inning relief for the Tigers and has a mediocre 4.27 ERA but every peripheral number is sparkling.  Can he keep it up when turning the lineup over multiple times?  Do you bother trying?  It's a gamble but if he can....

Shaw is a massive overpay for Gray, especially when you consider that he is essentially a rental because the option is mutual and there's a $10 million buyout attached if it's not picked up.

So here me out...maybe we just shuffle through birthday boys?

So you're suggesting the Cubs take a flyer on Corbin Burnes for a late October start, then...

Edinson Volzquez turns 43 tomorrow. He doesn't seem to be doing anything.

Dbacks are paying about $70 million for Burns, Gallen and Kelly this year.  That's pretty wild.

Looks like the Reds will finally beat the Brewers for the first time this season, in 8 tries.  Mis got rocked

Couple of things here. They didn’t lose yet, and Miz didn’t get rocked. 4 unearned runs. But, yes, right now the Reds are winning.
Miz pitched 5 inning and gave up 1 earned run while striking out 10. That would not qualify as rocked to me.

True, but for his standards he did.  When I was watching he gave up a 3 run HR to make it 5-0.

I will admit I was shocked when I saw 5-0. So I looked at the box score, only to find 4 unearned runs. I understand the excitement to see a 5 spot on Miz. And really don’t care how the Brewers give up runs, as long as they give up more than they score. So I get it. But he did pitch well. I was hoping a bad start would start a downward spiral. Now all we need is for the Reds to hold on.

How close would the Cubs have to get for Hoyer to consider going for Skubal ? I don’t think he will go there personally, but just wondering ? I see them all in on the Angels pitchers however and if the Giants decide to move Webb , I see them heavily involved as well

I think he would have to believe the Cubs would be a very good chance at a 1/2 seed. He's spoken on that in the past, at how being in that #1 or #2 seed changes the math.

So I'd assume they'd have to be very close to Milwaukee and with the belief that Skubal would push them over the top.

If the Cubs find a way to be 3 games back of Milwaukee going into the break, that would be a miracle.  That might even force the FO's hand to make a move earlier than the last minute.

And they should get some guys coming back after the break like Cabrera and Taillon.

without a day off + a double header.  I'm hoping they'll go 6-5 or 5-6.

Be cool if SL can take 3 of 5 and destroy the Brewers pen heading into Pittsburgh so they can take adventure of them

The Cubs should empty their farm system to get a guy like Joe Ryan, and then dangle a guy like Shaw to get Sonny Gray.  Those are 2 guys I'd feel very comfortable starting a playoff game, and neither is a rental.  Time to go for it.

I can see Hoyer getting Mize and Finnegan without giving up too much.  Additionally, adding Gray would be great, but only at the right cost.
