Just curious, if this was your pitching staff (healthy obviously) where would you place it amongst MLB pitching staffs?  fringe top 10?  Obviously some of this would never be a reality, like Ben Brown probably doesn't get a shot to start unless 2-3 guys were out, Shelby Miller was signed knowing he was hurt, etc. but still

Well, that pitching matchup is about as depressing as it gets.

If it makes you feel better Peterson is a big ground ball pitcher and the Brewers are dead last in fly ball rate.

I don’t think top 10, metric wise. More like 13-17 for me. This is assuming a staff of Horton, Boyd, Cabrera, Taillon and Imanaga. With Rea and Brown as middle relief and Palencia closing. Fill in the other spots with who they have. I think underlying numbers would show them 13-17, but with the Cubs defense they would probably be top 10 in run prevention. Even assuming some stints on the IL by guys, but nothing like this, the staff would be decent. And instead of 44-38 right now I could easily see 50-32. There is nk way around it. Injuries to the staff have hurt the Cubs greatly. Coming in they had a very good team who should have won 90+ games IMO.

Did you read the question you answered? Because if you did you would realize this response doesn’t answer the question asked. Or did you mean to add to my response when I said there record would probably be closer to 50-32?

If you don't count David Peterson, because he wouldn't be on it but for all the injuries, 11 of the Cubs' 9 starters and top 8 relievers (17 total) on their MLB.com depth chart are currently on the injured list. Doesn't count Boyd having been on the IL twice.

Add +8 to 10 wins to this team's record if not for all these pitching injuries.  I firmly believe Horton was on his way to being a top 5 or top 10 pitcher in the game and arguably the best player on the roster after PCA.  What's disappointing is how bad this bullpen has been.  There were so many good options last year.  Soto, Weaver, +.  And they pick Maton.

So, just clarifying here, you believe the roster that was put together in the offseason, had they stayed healthy, would be 52-30, a 103 win pace?

Per Levine: Emergency appendectomy last night. Surgery will take him 4-6 weeks to return.

I'd say mid 90s if they had everybody healthy and for the majority of the season (Horton, Steele, Boyd) but (not to go down this road again) I think there are still some areas they can improve on to be more competitive in the playoffs.  Similar to the Rays.  Rays are a good regular season team in a lot of years but they can never quite get to the finish line.

I also think the Peterson move is sneaky good.  I mean, 3 consecutive years I think with a FIP under 4.  He's way better than Cabrera.  Although I'm not sure they make that move in a scenario where they are fully healthy.

This team is at least 6 trades away from making the pitching staff as good as it was on opening day.

Which was mediocre
