Re: the rat - was at the game and it ran by the Phillies dugout/1st base marquee crew. Gave everyone a jump scare. Pretty fun, wish the broadcast picked it up

Wow.  Shota had 0 whiff with his 4 seam tonight, and that worked out well.  Totally different outing from the last game, and both worked.

12 straight for the Mets

Phillies are 8-15 and Mets are 7-16. They will both be playing catchup for the rest of the year if they don’t turn it around soon.

Surely there is someone in the organization that would be better as the last bench option than Kingery. Hopefully that's the last time we see him on the left side of the infield.

They said on the broadcast he hadn't played 3rd base in 5 years, and it looked like it.  Not sure how much practice time he put in there but that little gamble trying to hide him out at third almost backfired on CC.

Probably, definitely is. The way Counsell has typically used that 26th spot has been as a "place holder" for better or worse. They did this with guys like Miles Mastrobuoni, Luis Velasquez, etc. And I guess I kind of get it: you probably want to play Conforto, Shaw, Ballesteros, Amaya and Kelly (the five who more or less rotate in and out) and by the time you add Mr. 26th man, there just aren't many opportunities. So that player has to kind of be able to do: a lot of things "okay" but also be someone you don't mind being the sixth fiddle and someone you pay like being the sixth fiddle.. Like Kingery could probably handle 2b, 3b, LF or RF in a pinch and has a 73rd percentile sprint speed. You don't want to use him, but if you have to...then he can kind of do it okay-ish.

So you get guys like Kingery in that role. The midpoint between "prospect we like but we don't want them to waste away" and "bad enough that this kind of non-playing role is acceptable to this player and the budget".

It's certainly imperfect, but in theory, any injury will be replaced with MiLB talent and if Kingery can't even pinch run or field a ground ball, you can probably find Scott Kingery 2.0 or some version of an upgrade at the deadline for relative cheaply.

Did Boyd pitch in AAA as a rehab assignment? If so, how did he look?

One start in Iowa. Went 3.2. From all reports looked healthy, struck out 6, gave up 3 runs.

Eventually they're gonna need to give Long or Murray an opportunity

Why boo Keller?

I had it on mute. They’re the same people who booed Montero in his return to wrigley in 2017 so it wouldn’t surprise me at all. The answer is because there’s a ton of idiots who attend Cub games.

Probably not this year. Let them play every day. All the Cubs need from that 26th spot is a guy who can play decent defense in the infield and better than average speed. If the Cubs do bring up Long it will be due to an injury and them letting him play. Maybe Murray has an outside shot,’if they don’t consider him someone for their future and don’t mind letting him ride the bench. For me, the last spot should be their best fielding infielder in the minors who can also run a bit.

I said it before the 9th inning started, so this isn’t hindsight criticism. My thought was to bring Bregman in the game at 3rd in the 9th. Sure, you lose the DH, but who cares. They have a 4 run lead. Bregman helps protect that with better defense.  Why keep Kingery at 3rd? I will bet if the same situation occurs, or if Swanson or Nico are the DH and for some reason Kingery is in the game (and Shaw has already been used) if they are protecting a 9th inning lead he will put the better fielder in the game in the 9th and forfeit the DH spot.

Yeah, after that first throw - I was really nervous about Kingery out there.  That was about as routine a DP as you were going get in the ninth and he looked like Lester throwing to a base there.   You are right, pitcher hitting better than what almost happened.l
