Frustrates me that the Blue Jays can have Springer, Vlad, Gausman, Cease and probably Bichette on the roster and the Cubs can’t have anyone other than Dansby on a long term high priced contract. And, who knows, maybe the Jays get Tucker too.

Blue Jays will surrender their second- and fifth-highest selections in the 2026 draft plus $1MM from their international bonus pool in 2027. 

 

For fun with  deferrals for LT purposes the deal comes out to $26M AAV...... $ 1M dollars less than the Cubs are paying Shota/Rea this season.

I never thought the Cubs had a real shot at signing him, anyway.  They wouldn't offer him a 7yr contract.

I think it would be really funny if after all this Cubs need power stuff and K’s , they end up with Ranger Suarez 😂 . Don’t get me wrong Suarez is a solid pitcher , it would just be funny . 
 

I don’t see them getting Framber or Imai .  If they are going to sign an impact SP , then it’s probably King or Suarez

If Cease got 7/210, im almost positive the other top FA starters will be looking for the same, and i have zero confidence that the Cubs will be making that kind of offer to any of them.

I personally feel they're just going to add a couple depth type starters, but if they do add a top 3 type starter, it'll be via trade.

Honestly at this point if it's not Imai, I'd rather they just trade for either of Ryan or Cabrera.  I think Framber would do very well in front of this defense but I'm not interested in giving 5 years to a 32 year old pitcher. Ranger is a good pitcher, but he'd be yet another lefty and another starter who doesn't strike out a lot of guys. Are the Cubs really going to march out 4 lefties in the rotation? With that said, I think this is all rather optimistic and I wont be at all shocked if the pitcher they pick up is from the Merrill Kelly/Chris Bassitt tier.

I don’t see Valdez or Suarez either. Maybe King or Gallen. That is about the most I would expect via FA. But I don’t see fringe #4 starters like Bassitt and Kelly either. If they don’t get King or Gallen I would expect them to get that MOR/TOR starter in a trade.

I don’t see fringe depth starters added via FA. They have plenty of them. I agree they probably will not be in Valdez or Suarez. Maybe not King or Gallen either, but they would be the high end get, IMO. Assuming they do t get any of those in FA, I would expect a trade over just getting fringe FA pitchers . I think they would just sign pen arms over #4/5 starters.

Gallen is one I could definitely see Jed picking up. He has the history of being a front line starter and they probably think the pitch lab can fix whatever happened in 2025 to get him back in form.

Damn, I wanted Cease.  He was my #1 guy this winter.  I like the trade options a smidge less than Cease and the FAs a lot less, so I'm hoping Jed has already sent a few "u up?" texts to the Marlins and Nats.

I also think it's interesting that there's been so much smoke around the bullpen the last few days, specifically that the team is going to throw a good bit more money around there than we're used to.  Given the timing it's hard not to think there's a connection.  The question is if the team just "freed up" $10Mish (the dropoff from Cease to someone like King) or $25Mish (the dropoff from Cease to someone like Gore or Cabrera).  Time will tell I guess.
