I'm so close to the point where being a Chicago sports fan is literally bringing nothing but negativity into my life. I'm on the verge of just saying screw it all and I'd probably be a happier person for it.

You would undoubtedly be happier.  We all would.  We’re trapped in a never-ending cycle of mediocrity with only a few bright spots of sanity far in between long stretches of consternation.

I think Caleb started out running the offense more or less the way BJ wants it, but after awhile he just fell back into his old habits of scrambling around and trying to sandlot big plays.

You think so?  Look at that first drive again, I saw Caleb holding the ball a long time and improvising when the protection broke down. It was no doubt successful but it didn’t feel like it was within the flow of the offense Ben Johnson wanted to run. I could be wrong but it’s something I noted at the time even though it was a TD drive

sorry I don’t normally link to twitter but I didn’t see this angle of that 4th down botched throw. Just awful.

His teammates are going to turn on him. You just can’t be that bad in the NFL. It’s the same thing over and over: can’t hit the deep ball, inaccuracy, holding it too long, not throwing it away, not seeing the open receiver. Can he make plays? Sure, but career backups can make plays.

Pretty certain most/all teams “script” their first 15 plays and that’s a pretty big focus during the week. Probably why teams often look great on an opening drive but then not as much after.

They’ve sucked for the last 11 years and counting with 8 losing seasons and 1 winning season. I’d kill for mediocrity. At least it’s watchable football. That’s how low the bar has gotten.

Exactly. Not enough quick hitting anticipation routes to receivers on the permitter. Flores conceded a lot of the underneath throws to Swift and it allowed to him gain yards with his legs on that opening drive, largely because he was late on his reads. Once Flores started defending the underneath throws Caleb couldn’t keep them honest with his awful accuracy on throws over 10 yards and the offense had no answer. I wish I was born in Boston.

The real question is do the Cubs or Bears win more games in October?

Chicago teams: Lucy.

Chicago fans: Charlie Brown.

My patience with this team will evaporate quickly if they don't start being interesting to watch.

Yeah I mentioned that.  OK fine you sign Swift.  Why are his complimentary backs guys like Roschon Johnson and Kyle M-whatever?  He's never been a bellcow RB.  He did his best in Philly in a 3 headed RB system and elite O-line.

Just don't know why Poles had so much conviction that Swift was an above average 3 down back.  Might as well have just spent for Jacobs or Henry if you're trying to get a guy you can confidently hand the ball to 200 times a year.

Because Poles is not good at his job

He’s will always uncork those maddening throws.  It’s in his DNA.  Can’t coach it away.  He will always overthrow deep guys too.  Especially when they are wide open.  Had another one of those last night.

Transplant Caleb’s arm on to Bagent’s shoulder and you’ve got a good QB.

I don’t think BJ will stick with Caleb way into the season just because he’s a #1 pick.  They re-signed Bagent because BJ really likes him.  Poles signed off on that too. He’s not a terrible option for this offense.  At the very least, Bagent starting shouldn’t be considered outrageous just because he’s wasn’t a highly touted QB out of college.

Ok maybe it’s because I didn’t watch the game live and I’m not in the states right now so it’s not hitting me as viscerally (I woke up to the score so I didn’t experience it as it happened) but man people are really jumping down the well of pessimism one game into the season.

all the things you feel may be true but let’s give Johnson and Caleb more than a game maybe

Then that’s not a successful NFL QB

A few weeks ago Dave Wannestedt said he was at a Bears practice right after they re-signed Bagent and was talking to Poles. Dave said, “It looks like you have a solid backup QB now.” Poles said, “ We have that and more.”

My thoughts

- I am extremely worried about Caleb Williams, almost to the point where I'm already ready to declare that he is not going to be a top-notch NFL starter, he might not even be average. It's the same problems that Bears fans have seen from their quarterbacks forever. He doesn't see the field, he doesn't get rid of the ball fast enough, and when he finally does make the right read he overthrows the ball or throws it into his receiver's feet. I don't care how good Ben Johnson is those are things you cannot fix at the NFL level. We have seen this movie before, I know what it looks like. I would be stunned at this point if Caleb Williams even kind of lives up to the hype.

-Santos is garbage. In the modern NFL you cannot have a kicker who doesn't even have enough leg to hit a 50 yard field goal.

- the running back situation is brutal, and the worst part is they knew that going into the offseason and they did absolutely nothing to fix it. Why are we taking Luther burden at 39 when this team still has massive holes at RB? I mean the starting QB can't throw anyways so what's the point of giving him multiple targets? Swift is about as average you get and to have Johnson and a 7th round pick as your backup options is just really bad roster building. But I mean what do you expect Ryan Poles is absolute trash.

Honestly man I'm so close to saying screw it and just becoming a Shameless bandwagon fan. Call me when the Bears are good and I'll sit down and watch them, but other than that I got to find other stuff to do on Sundays. I've seen way too much crappy football in my life, I'm tired of watching it. If the Bears ever get a QB, then I'll take a look.

Haven't posted in a while, just didn't think the Cubs were worth my time anymore, they're not serious about winning, plus all the other garbage. Getting back to Bears, I still believe Caleb' going to cook but, it's going to take an inextricably long time for the oven to warm up.  Maybe, a quarter or more of the season, if after, say, 6 or 7 games we're still seeing the same poor play from Caleb it's time to move on.

I hope Caleb does become a great QB, but if Caleb continues to struggle and makes the same mistakes again and again, I still fear that he will be on an extra long leash because your coach and GM just started long-term contracts

Couldn't agree more, teams literally find guys off the street with bigger legs.  Was really disappointed the Bears didn't even consider looking for another kicker.
