There was plenty to complain about, being that the Brewers won 75% of their games for 2 months and the Cubs have the 2nd worst offense in MLB in the 2nd half, making it easier for the Brewers to surpass them. I mean hey, pat yourself on the back for remaining stoic and not having a public meltdown if you wish, but there were plenty of valid reasons for fans to get upset and lose hope. I think only a small, small group actually said they believed the Cubs would miss the playoffs, however. The reactions were pretty normal, I bet, if you compare fan bases around the league at large.

Cubs are in the running for the second best record in baseball. They can only control what the Brewers do when they play the Brewers. And they won that season series. So getting upset or criticizing the Cubs because the Brewers are 31 games over .500 is not reasonable.  But I agree with you, the reaction is normal. It is what all fans do. I never said it was wrong. I said it was easy to be negative. And even easier to be correct if you are negative.

I don't know who the "this is a historic collapse" crowd was - I have been emotional and angry at the team but I never once really thought they had any chance of losing out on a wild card spot.

The frustration had much more to do with the Brewers going on one of the best tears in baseball history right when the Cubs started scuffling a bit (and a sober eye could see even the scuffle wasn't that bad) and nearly locked down the entire division in like a 6 week span.

They're going to the playoffs - that is more or less unquestioned at this point. What they do there, well who knows. The goal is to make it, ideally make it as a good seed, and most importantly make it as often as possible. That's one thing they've been bad at: you can't load up for just one year every 4 years. You gotta just keep making it and eventually you win one. The Dodgers did it, despite notorious seasons where they blew it with the best team in baseball. So could anyone else if they make it 15 years in a row.

Boog better be back for the SF series

Don't like the new guy? I personally like him way better than Boog. I really don't care for Boog though, so that isnt saying a lot.

Not a fan of his "buhbye for (hitter who homered)", or however it is that he says it. He'd be way better off if he didn't try to have a canned homer call. Or if his name was Len Kasper that'd be better too.

Cohen is a rank amateur who JD openly despises

pretty cool that palencia can get his confidence back in the middle of what looks like a disaster outing

I take my chances on a 102 mph flame thrower closer than with a contact hitter reliever.

I gotta say - I agree, it sure seems like he doesn't like him.  I noted yesterday it seemed JD was making a real effort to at least conversate with him - as there have been games where it seems like anything but, it was literally cringeworthy it was so awkward.  I also agree with Bote on the buh-bye, that is also cringeworthy.

It is good to get a break from Boog's I know more baseball than all of you act from time to time, but the chemistry seems so bad with Cohen and JD I find myself thinking "Come back Boog"!

He’s terrible. He sounds like a minor league announcer (which he is) trying too hard to be cute, clever, and fun. He may be good in time, but he should be honing his skills in a market much smaller than Chicago.

Im wondering what going to happen with Boog next season now that ESPN wont be doing baseball anymore.

I think we're seeing more of Cohen this year because he might be Boog replacement if Boog decides to sign on with another station to call games.

I can't handle Cohen full time. I would literally rather have Chip Caray back instead of him

This is the most outrageous take of the season.

Cohen is not terrible, but he's not comfortable up there and he's got the best color commentator in the business as a booth partner and as much as JD tries, he can't elevate him at all. Most importantly, Cohen hasn't improved his shortcomings at all in a lot of opportunities this season.

I gotta ask - do you agree with me about JD? Because it's clear JD strongly prefers Boog as a booth partner. That should be enough to prefer Boog in a value judgment, regardless of your problems with him.

The biggest problem with Cohen is he can't riff. Boog is a fantastic improvisor (so is Taylor).

Cohen best calls (e.g. Seiya says seeya) are done to absolute death to the point that they're grating. Boog is charismatic and thinks on his feet - he's natural. And he's so good at riffing, he elevates JD in conversation.

I guess I feel strongly about this

Since Horton wasn't on the opening day roster, we wouldn't get the extra pick if he wins, which sucks.

Brett at BN also pointed out that if he finishes top two, this year counts as a full year of service time. Same goes for Shaw.

Can't and won't argue with that....he's a butt kiss and JD's silence is deafening. You can just tell he doesn't care one iota for him

I think there is zero chance Cohen would get the job if Boog left. And why would Boog leave just because ESPN isn’t doing games?

It a possibility that NBC or whomever has the games nationally offer boog a deal and he can  get to do more games for them then he did with ESPN.

Im sure he would prefer that over staying with the cubs and marquee

There aren't more games for NBC to offer, they're only getting Sunday night games, which Boog is already doing(albeit on radio).  Even if there were a few more, the more likely outcome would be an arrangement like Joe Davis has with Fox, where he does those national games and the playoffs but is still the Dodgers primary announcer.  The national money(especially in the current TV rights climate) is not going to be good enough that it's more lucrative for Boog to do 1-2 national games a week than it is to do a full season with one team(especially a higher prestige team like the Cubs).

They have certainly given Cohen the opportunity, but the chemistry is just bad with he and JD who seems to be as get along a guy as there is, running that back IF and that's a big IF, Boog does not return.  It would be like forcing Girardi and Boog together who obviously did not like each other and they did that waaaay too many times.

The thing with Cohen is he is a fill in. They aren’t going to get a major market guy for just 25 games or whatever (I know it was a few more this year because Boog was sick earlier in the season). But if they had to replace Boog the pool of candidates would be so much bigger and they would have the ability to get one of the top candidates in the game, and not a minor league announcer working as a fill in.

This has been a great opportunity for Cohen but I’d be shocked (and super disappointed) if they were planning on him being the heir apparent. My guess is that Cohen takes this opportunity and turns it in to a full time gig with a team like the Reds, Pirates, A’s, Royals, or some other smaller and less iconic franchise.

This. Same as Zach Zaidman on radio. Its good business to develop talent, but it is also good business to bring in better talent if the in house guys aren't up to standards. I think all parties involved realize a cookie cutter play by play guy will not work for the Cubs.

Zaidman is soooo bad even though he's been filling in for Pat for so long. Dude just doesn't read what's happening on the field and still gets way overexcited half the time
