You have to pretty much wait until the last day for the big moves or else you have to give up too much

I well aware of this point, doesn't mean I have to like when the Cubs need pitching right now, if possible, sooner.  Guess I can look on the bright side and know the 2+ month wait for pitching help will end this week.

I haven't waded through the whole thread so don't know if it was mentioned but I think it's worth keeping an eye on whether or not Boyd can locate his FB in his next couple starts.  That was 100% of the issue tonight.  He was yanking it inside to righties and the HR Vaughn hit was supposed to be on the outside corner and he pulled it middle middle.  Hopefully it was just a blip and not a fatigue thing that has to be handled carefully.

The next rotation slot that needs to be filled by new SP will be Saturday for Brown and Monday for Rea, so depending on their last start, today or tomorrow (Wednesday) would be a good day to get at least one starter to be here and ready to pitch Saturday.  Thursday is more then enough time for Monday's start, I just think if Hoyer needs to wait til Thursday to get his SP, theyre not going to be ready to go with just a day(Friday) for physical and get himself situated, travel, and then prepared for a start on Saturday.

So, I think we may see a deal done likely by tomorrow for a SP.

But the rest of the market doesn't care about the Cubs pitching schedule. I was fine with Jed kickstarting the market by overpaying a few weeks ago. Now that we're here, it's one game, so I'm fine with him taking his typical approach, as frustrating as it is to wait until the last second.

Maybe he just didn't want to overpay with guys like Caissie and Wiggins to get guys a couple weeks ago and figured they were in good enough position to wait it out, and who knows, maybe the guys he is prioritizing just weren't made available yet by their team who may have wanted to wait to see if they can make a run and or get better offers closer to the deadline.

I get frustrated too at the waiting for him to do something and sending out the same players to basically fail at what they're supposed to do, I just hope now that we're 2 days away, he got is extension, that he is allowed to add to payroll and can bring in a couple players that will make an instant impact for this team going forward and we'll all be very happy 😊

I mean, we're 5-5 since the ASB. The sky isn't exactly falling. Overpaying because the Brewers are running at an 80% clip while our 'make the playoff' likelihood continues to move in the right direction (83% a month ago, 95.3% now) probably isn't the prudent thing to do.

But yeah, the division and a first round bye are right there for the taking, going half assed on this deadline with the assets (cash and prospects) at hand is pretty unacceptable.

People act like Jed can just go out and trade for a starter on a moment's notice like he is running out for bread at the grocery store

In past years we seen teams getting out in front of the deadline mostly so they can get the couple extra starts from the SP in July, but recently we dont see that much anymore because of all the teams still sorta alive for a WC spot.

Plus, teams that were sellers in the past were more aggressive to sell much earlier then they are now because of fear of not getting a better return if they waited because buyers wanted guys earlier, nowadays it just the complete opposite.

Also something to consider with Hoyer, maybe because of not having that extension he might have been hesitant or told not to trade away certain prospects, there has to be a reason for the timing of this extension to have been done now.

Maybe. But you also might be reading too much into it. It could have been a forgone conclusion within the ownership of the team that Hoyer would be extended. I doubt he was hesitant because of his job security. However, this does tell the rest of the baseball world he isn’t a lame duck. That could be why they did it now. I think he never really was in jeapordy of losing his job.
