I guess this is why they've been experimenting with Marte in RF. I still don't like it.

Yeah, I still hate that for the Reds. He doesn't have great barrel control and his GB% is nearing 50%. Even if he pulls more, I just don't think it's going to save him. It'll probably just have him go from "really bad hitter" to "bad hitter".

Ke'Bryan Hayes is one of the worst hitters in the major leagues, and still manages to put up above-replacement value thanks to his defensive prowess.

If the Reds think they've got an idea for a mechanical change that can make him even a below-average hitter, he can be a real asset.

This probably sets the market for relievers. Can any of the prospect gurus give a Cubs equivalent to this trade?

That is a haul for a non-closer reliever who is a pure rental. Gilbert and Tidwell both performing in AAA and are top-10 ish prospects in Mets system.

and also ....

Meh, I don't think too much of Gilbert I think you maybe hope you can get a Mike Tauchmann out of him. Tidwell has significant control issues and not enough stuff that you can just overlook it. I think he's destined for the pen. In my eyes they were both guys who were going to fall down the rankings once the end of year reports come out.

Yeah, bigger in name value than trade value, IMO.

They didn't get Painter but that's still a big haul.

Feels pretty even honestly. About what I would expect. A pretty solid upside SP and a toolsy A ball player. Nothing crazy but also potentially good haul.

Mets have been known to give up too much (PCA) with regard to prospects before

Yeah it's not like a drastic overpay or anything, but it is a guy who has legit mid rotation, maybe even higher upside. Personally I don't like catching prospects, but Tait is nice. The guy has been more or less a league average bat at age 18 in A+ while playing catcher and having respectable BB% and K%. For me at least, Tait all comes to if he can stay behind the plate because I'm not sure the bat is exciting enough to carry him at 1B or COF.

So if the Cardinals and Giants are selling, or not doing much of anything to improve, the NL playoff teams seem to be pretty much set before August 1st with only the Reds actually trying to push a team out.

Obviously the schedule has to play out but ...
