The Yankees have a new third baseman. They are acquiring Ryan McMahon from the Rockies, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The Rockies will receive two prospects in return. One of the two prospects is left-hander Griffin Herring, per Jorge Castillo of ESPN. The other has not been publicly reported yet.

"

Herring seems like he's got some potential.  9K/9 in high A.  Feels like a decent pull for McMahon.

Feels like a return for Suarez based on this and Naylor would be something like Will Sanders and Triantos? Maybe a little more?

I’d do that all week and twice on Tuesday.

As would I. But now with McMahon off the market, the price probably went up. And McMahon isn't a rental and is an elite defender but he has an OPS below .600 away from Coors, so.....

Why up? I would think the Yankees getting McMahon takes them out of Suarez. If it did anything I would guess it brought the price down. My guess is the Dbacks are asking too much now and the Yankees moved on.

I wonder if the Yankees also believe Suarez will regress more to his norm the rest of the season. That is a concern of mine, not that he isnt worth getting, but his season so far has him way over valued.

He's hit 9 balls this year that would have been homers at Yankee Stadium and were outs, doubles, or triples.  That's always a factor when the Yankees go get a lefty hitter.

I've been using Sanders and Pedro Ramirez as my mental model of what one of the top rental bats would cost, so yeah I think Sanders/Triantos is about the same.

Maybe since Suarez is *the* top bat we need to aim a little higher.  Like  Wicks or Birdsell instead of Sanders?  But regardless of specifics two guys that'd slot in around #10 in our system is a good place to set expectations.

Do the Cubs get Castro with just one of those guys? I might rather do that. I like Castro’s versatility. And it allows Shaw to play more.

I think you could argue a pretty wide range of values for Castro.  But I would suspect he's worth less than Naylor.  So yeah one guy in the neighborhood of #10 in the system and then another closer to #30 is probably what I'd expect.

Maybe I am buying into to Jason’s explanation that Suarez won’t be as big a difference as we think he will be, but I think I would rather have Castro at a lower cost, than Suarez for his rumored/expected cost.

Royals small buyers so far. We’ll see if they do a buy and sell deadline or end up hanging onto Lugo/Estevez
