Yesterday was actually PCA's 162nd big league game.

So far, in 540 PA, he's put up a .242/.294/.408 slash line with 15 HR and 39 SB (6 CS). Plus 22 doubles and 7 triples. With his baserunning and defense, that's been worth 3.8 rWAR or 4.2 fWAR, depending on which measure you trust more.

He only needed to hit like an OK catcher to be a valuable player because of everything else. If he hits like this, he's an MVP player.

And his swag is off the charts, which doesn't earn you any WAR but absolutely is part of why the fans all love him so much already.

I don't think he'll keep hitting like *this*, but i do think if you were setting an over/under on his wRC+ at this point it'd certainly be north of 100.  And with his speed and defense a league average bat was all that was needed for All Star caliber production.

And yeah, from the watchability even far outpaces the value.  He's a star in every sense of the word.

And the back of rotation pitcher, I forget his name. probably Scott

Trevor Williams. Currently has a 5.11 ERA for the Nats as a starter.

Lot of potential comps mentioned in the article but I haven't really found one I love yet.

  • Lorenzo Cain - maxed out at 16 HRs and 30 SBs, there's a very real chance PCA eclipses both of those this year, but Cain was much better at putting the ball in play/getting on base
  • Kiermeyer - PCA is a better hitter and faster
  • JBJ - PCA is a better defender and much faster
  • Ellsbury - Just a different hitter and probably faster than PCA. Only had double digit HRs twice (including 32 in a 9.5 fWAR year), but career 13.7% K rate
  • Granderson - Has more power and less speed/defense than PCA, really more of a power hitter with some stolen bases early in his career
  • Sizemore - Wanted this one really bad but he had pretty consistent double digit walk rates. Pretty insane how short his run was, just four years with over 4 fWAR
  • Andruw Jones - Better defender, better hitter.

I can think of so many players that parts of his game remind me of, but no one player where it all comes together to match perfectly in respects to baserunning, positional defense, and offense.  If he could get his BB% into double digits, making comps would be a lot easier, but all the players I can think of that come close to his production levels are all better at BB% than him, or he eclipses them in other aspects like baserunning or defense.  There's no easy comp, you really have to three-headed-monster his comparisons

Is Carlos Beltran a good comparison? I can't remember how good his defense was, but he won 3 gold gloves.

Far too much contact. Career K% around 16%

Yeah, you sort CFs since 1990 by best defensive season and you get some of the same names. I think ultimately the issue is like, he has a 145 wRC and so you want to throw out guys like Devon White. But he's also overperofmring his xwOBA by like 70 points, because pretty much everyone else in history with wRCs over 140 are a lot better at walking and not striking out. Corey Patterson if he never got hurt is kinda deflating, but maybe?
