Yeah , as soon as he got DFA , I knew they weren’t getting Robertson . Robertson will get 10-12 . Brasier I believe comes at 4.5

Jed has a type…

As I said in the Bregman thread, feels like this only adds to the Bregman smoke. Cheaper option than Robertson that gives you more room if the reported $30M AAV is accurate.

My guess is Zastrynsny gets DFA and in terms of the 26 man roster , if no injuries , Merryweather and Asad are in danger

Gavin Hollowell is still occupying a spot somehow. He could be DFA'd as well.

I also keep waiting for a trade to keep Workman.

Yeah , Keegan will also be DFA at some point as well , probably at the end of spring training , if there aren’t any injuries

In a vacuum I'm cool with Braiser. He's a pretty good and useful arm. Velo drop last year, but you'd hope the Cubs could squeeze a bit back out of it if he's heathy. It was a calf strain, so you hope that the arm is just fine.

He is fine. Probably closed the door on Robertson.

Bullpen right now would presumably be:

CL - Pressly

SU (1 inning) - Brasier, Hodge

SU (multi-inning) - Pearson

Matchup Guys - Miller, Thielbar

Middle Relief - Morgan, Merryweather

That's a good pen as is.  If anyone else gets added Merryweather would seemingly be next on the chopping block.  Similarly if Rea doesn't win the 5th starter spot Merryweather would seem to be the one to go.

I also wouldn't hate a small Tyson Miller trade.  I feel like him and Brasier are a bit duplicative.

With the potential to be very good if something happens like Ben Brown staying healthy and developing into a reliable late innings reliever.

Looks like the Cubs are paying $2.8M of Brasier’s contract

So the Cubs are paying roughly $12 mil for both Pressly and Brasier, instead of that 12 for one reliever. Jed squeezing all the savings he can.

Value and efficiency.  Where's the mockers now?

This is very interesting to me.  Is this because the Dodgers couldn't get someone else to pay more (they DFA'd Brasier, other teams could easily wait them out) or because Jed affirmatively paid down Brasier's already modest $4.5M salary?  The latter would definitely make you raise an eyebrow when paired with the Bregman stuff.

Are you saying Jed allowing the Dodgers to only pay $1.7M of his contract was a better offer than other teams (like they were wanting the Dodgers to pay $2.5M or something?). Either case seems plausible since he had to be traded last night or he was getting released and they were on the hook for the whole thing.

Yep, and then he could be signed at league minimum by someone and that would have come off the Dodgers $4.5M. I think claiming a guy released goes by order of worse record to best. So Cubs may not have been able to get him. Good move my Jed, IMO.

I think we have to look at this in one of two ways:

1. The Dodgers couldn't find a single taker on Braiser for his full salary, and thus, to get the Cubs to take him, offered to eat his contract down to $2.8m. While the Cubs liked this, it isn't because they're trying to save every penny they can. (I.E. Bregman). This was the best offer for the Dodgers.

2. The Cubs specifically targeted Braiser and his contract (over others like Robertson, Finnegan, etc) and maybe even bought down his salary even further on purpose (by adding better PTBL names, perhaps?) for a specific, money saving purposes (I.E. Bregman)

The timing makes it seem like it could be connected to their pursuit of Bregman but maybe it's just the timing on Braiser alone.

Very possible. And the deal, on it’s own, is a good move by Jed. Why pay $10M+ for Robertson when you can get another guy for much less that you like.
