After reading up on Mr. McCarthy, as much as I hate that he was a Packers head coach, he's now my #1 choice to be the next head coach. He has the NFL results that you want from an experienced head coaching candidate, and it's possible that an experienced coach might be a better way to go if the right choice is there. His determination to get into coaching was rewarded, and I'm sure that means a lot every time he takes the field.

Calm down, Tunzi. You had absolutely nothing to do with my change in direction.

Ben Johnson and Joe Brady are still my #2 and #3 option. I'm not fond of any of the other experienced candidates outside of Kingsbury, who is #4 on my list.

I'm still Johnson -big gap- Monken-McCarthy, but fully admit *vibes* might be the only reason I have Monken ahead of him.

Waddle and Silvy had Gase on to talk Johnson (coached together in Miami) and former Packer Mark Tauscher to talk McCarthy.  Both were decent listens (they also had Urlacher on to talk Freeman and I had no interest in listening to that one)

The athletic’s latest two round mock has the bears going OT (Josh Simmons OSU), OG/C (Wyatt Milum WV), EDGE* (Landon Jackson Arkansas) in the first three picks

Seems like a logical order of picks for their needs but Poles doesn’t draft logically so who knows

* I hate the term EDGE but I guess we have to use it

I’ll admit, if the bears drafted Jeanty and went OL:OL or OL:DL with their 2nds I might be ok with it. The biggest reason is that Jeanty not only is a stud RB, but also a weapon in the passing game. Tomlinson is the name he gets compared to

I hate it too. It needs to be an acronym. Just use ED for Edge Defender, I guess. Unless there are words for GE I am unaware of and it's been a full acronym the entire time.

Hard pass, underwent season ending knee surgery in October, no more draftees with major injury histories.  Replace Simmons with Banks Jr. Texas.

Sounds like a Poles guy

Exactly. Maybe Simmons will be okay for another team.  The Bears have had terrible luck drafting guys with injury histories best just to stay away.

If they pass up Will Campbell for a tackle coming off an injury, I will be rather displeased.

I don't believe he'll be available at 10, most have him gone within the top 9.  So Poles won't have chance to pass on him for someone coming off an injury.

That Athletic mock had Campbell at 18, thinking he at least starts at G

I am kinda warming to Mike McCarthy as coach as a secondary option to Ben Johnson.

Maybe I am just one of the dummies

I listen to the Athletic Football show; their quote on McCarthy is that his career winning percentage is right between Bill Walsh and Tom Landry.

Yes, he looks and sounds like an idiot, but he is a solid offensive coach and what they call a "floor raiser"

As much as I want the super sexy high ceiling coach I"m not sure this team is ready for it given how the locker room broke up. They might need more of a boring, steady hand. That's not the opposite of Flus in the personality department, but it is in terms of competency as a head coach and on the correct side of the ball.

My opinion of the Running Back position has moved up a bit in the last year (and eating crow on the Lions drafting Jahmyr Gibbs), but not nearly enough to think the Bears should draft a RB 10th overall. It's one thing for the Lions to be able to draft one while putting together a stud offensive line as a finishing touch of a team that is ready to make the playoffs, its another on a team that has maybe 1 lineman they feel really good about.

Did anyone see that report yesterday that Ben Johnson was insisting that the Commanders keep Sam Howell as their QB while he was interviewing with them? The Commanders said 'no we're drafting a QB at 2 (Daniels)' and that was apparently the dealbreaker that caused the Commanders to turn their plane around.

The report was coming from some Commanders people.  I have no doubt Johnson could probably make Howell an above average QB (I just said this to trigger Kyle) and maybe Daniels doesn't fit his mold (or maybe he does I dunno I've been kinda disengaged from the coaching search), but given that, if I'm hiring Ben Johnson its probably better if you have your QB in place.

The pure ego draw of being an NFL HC would push nearly everyone to feel differently

True, but Johnson is being notoriously choosy about where he goes and the situation, etc.  He likely would have already been an NFL HC this season if he wasnt so choosy

Feel bad for Caleb if Johnson goes to the Raiders.  He sounded like he was almost pleading for Ben Johnson on the St Brown Brothers podcast released today.  He ended it with "and if its not Ben Johnson........it is what it is"

Raiders beat reporters sure seem to think Johnson is going there

Yeah sure does.

He would probably get his pick of GM or at least input on it. Probably would also get his asking price met. Something I doubt the Bears are willing to do.

this is only marginally relevant because of brady being a raiders minority owner but do any chicago teams have any "cool" people as owners? i think this stuff might matter on the margins for attracting talent.

If I'm choosing between the Raiders organization and team as it is constructed right now and the Bears organization and team as it is constructed, I'm picking the Bears 9 times out of 10. But I'm also not Ben Johnson, so my opinion doesn't matter.
