My problem with McCarthy: he looks like a big dumb idiot

In other words your typical Bears fan from Mokena

McCarthy would the offensive version of the John Fox hire. No effin thank you.

I truely think Fox was checked out. I don't know how you protect against that but hopefully since an old McCarthy pal isn't on the search committee that helps?

But even still, McCarthy's w% clips Fox's .608 to .572.  Even Dallas era McCarthy clips that at .583.

And it's offense instead of defense so automatically better.

From McCarthy' Wikipedia entry - "McCarthy is a culinary enthusiast and has a history of supporting local restaurants and chefs throughout his coaching career." - would have never guessed this of him.

Low key I think this is the issue for many.  Put him on ozempic and his favorability rating skyrockets.

Hes probably 3rd for me after Johnson and Monken at this point. I think I'd have slated Vrabel ahead when he was available.

Johnson

Monken

McCarthy

Tier 2 (spin young hot OC wheel no specific order)

Coen, Brady

Tier 3 (would probably talk myself into)

Carroll, Shaw, Flores

Rest not worth ranking either because my opinion is low or uninformed.

Not terribly different for me. I have

Tier 1( Guys who have an established history of putting top tier offenses together)

Johnson

Monken

Brady

Tier 2(Guys with a history of coaching success)

Carroll,McCarthy

Tier 3(Guys who are wildcards or guys who are very good defensive coaches but don't fit the Bear's needs)

Flores, Kingsbury, Glenn, Coen

Tier 4(Guys I would be livid if they hired)

Rivera, Kafka, Arthur Smith,

it oftentimes surprises me to remember that Dallas's GM is the 82 year old billionaire owner lmao

And yet their VP of Player personnel is one of the most respected talent evaluators in the league.

Jerry is an interesting situation in terms of bosses go, but I think if you hit it off there's a lot of loyalty there.  And he can be an extremely cheap ass mother horsefeathers, but at the same time will pay up when he feels it's warranted.. He just really doesn't like wasting money - which is why he let McCarthy go through his contract in a lame duck year.

It probably runs hot or cold in its attractiveness among the openings.

Jerry Jones GM

I went through the same thought track of Ben Johnson and the Cowboys and then immediately realized Jones is significantly worse than having a potential lame duck Ryan Poles as your GM.

Not likely that the Bears would do the Chris Spielman/Lions thing, but Chico might be a good voice for the Halas family to listen to.

Seems to be universally respected in the football world, former Bear from the SuperBowl winning team, likely has lots of league wide contacts given all his time as a coach. He made a lot of bad decisions in Washington, but in theory that wouldn't be his lane.

Again, doesn't seem like a thing the Bears would do, but I wouldn't hate it. Rivera would be better than Kreutz or Urlacher. Cutler might be the most fun, ha

There's chatter that Jones is complaining to the other owners about how much dead money is going to fire coaches. He is apparently trying to convince them to behave like he did with McCarthy even though it is an objectionable situation to all parties except the owner.

No use trying to convince an 80+ year old to change their mind. It will not happen

Chico/Thayer/Peanut as the Sr advisors to Chairman/CEO for the next GM/HC search in 2028 (when we fire Poles and Weaver).

1. Experienced coach and former player, relative non idiot

2. Media personality and former player, relative non idiot

3. General cool legend, non idiot (can run FBI background checks?)

With McCarthy out, what would stop the Cowboys from getting Ben Johnson?

Deion Sanders. Schefter said there is mutual interest between Deion and Jones.

I am kinda warming to Mike McCarthy as coach as a secondary option to Ben Johnson.

Maybe I am just one of the dummies

He definitely raises the floor, Caleb and the offense will improve quite a bit.  He's probably a better choice than most of the other candidates beyond Johnson.

for all their issues, the Cowboys have had a pretty good offense under McCarthy.

Middle of the pack this year with Cooper Rush starting half their games.

3 really good years with Dak starting all/most of their games

another middle of the pack year in 2020 when Andy Dalton got the most starts
