Week 10 - Patriots (2-7) at Bears (4-4) - Noon on FOX

Posted (edited)

The season is falling apart but we still need a game thread to talk about it right?  Bears are playing their first home game and their first noon game in 35 days and things have changed quite a bit since we last played at Soldier Field.  The Bears still have an 8 game home winning streak with their last loss being almost 13 months ago (10/15/23 against the Vikings).  But the combined record of the teams they played during that streak is 41-69, with the 12-5 Lions from last year being the only team with a winning record that we've beat.

As everyone knows, this is the last easy game before the gauntlet that will last the rest of the season.   The Bears remaining opponents after this game have a combined record of 46-21 (after counting the division opponents twice), and that doesn't even account for the fact that the 49ers are 4-4 but have largely been injury riddled and are getting many of their best guys back.  So the average Bears opponent the rest of the season is roughly the equivalent of a 12-5 team (.687 winning percentage). The Bears are probably screwed either way but if they want any hope of stopping the avalanche of negativity thats building up this game is an absolute must win.

Bears are 6 point favorites

Oh and

It's absolutely insane that the Panthers have scored first in a game and we haven't.

Anyway, here's hoping we have a Car-Jax style game, the offense gets healthy and Caleb's jersey stays relatively clean. Then we get to look down the barrel of a machine gun.

To further emphasize how tough the Bears remaining SOS is, here is how it looks currently.  After this week that number for the Bears will jump up to .687 (or whatever it looks like after the Bears remaining opponents play their games this week). No one is even close to us

Getting back to football, what may done to help the Bears offense?  Maybe, starting to phase Allen out, phase Scott in and focus on targeting Moore?  Go more max protect, try to go with something quick, more no huddle offense?  I think Caleb is suited to execute such a game plan.

Caleb obviously loves the hurry up offense and he seems to thrive in it. The problem with max protect is that you're basically completely writing Kmet out of the game plan then.

And Brisker is out again. I don't know if we can count on Brisker....in any capacity going forward. That's a big loss.

I've been able to Cope with most of the Bears distress lately but it would be nice, just to have a nice distraction given everything going on, if they could play well! But the bad news keeps cascading down.

Brisker needs to retire. Football isn’t worth it.

Billings out for the season with a torn pec

What is going on with our pecs this season?

Also it looks like the Bears are already saying Brisker will be out this week.  At this point we can't count on him to play at all the rest of the season, though obviously its still a possibility.

Poor Jaquan. My brother's been a big fan of his and I was planning on getting him a Brisker jersey for his birthday, but I'm putting that on hold for right now. Woof. What a kick in the nuts.

We have been shockingly healthy for the last year and a half until just the past few weeks, when we get debilitating injuries on both sides of the ball. Good lord. When it rains it pours.

For Caleb's sake, they can't be allowed to give up. You can't have his season just go completely off the deep end with 9 games to go. Maybe that does necessitate a change at Head Coach now, I don't know.

Even if they are entering a buzzsaw and will go 2-7 down the stretch or whatever, they have to play hard, give Caleb a chance to compete and develop.

I completely agree, I think a big part of it is shelving Allen, appeared to be a good idea but, he's done.  No need to waste any more targets on him, target Moore, phase in Colin Johnson and Tyler Scott.

That injury report is disheartening. Starting to feel like 1 or 2 wins left at best. horsefeathers these last 2 weeks straight to hell.

I know it's been mentioned that DJ walked off the field mid play early when Caleb scrambled from one side of the field to the other. But has anyone noticed that DJ was on the field the very next play and ran a go route (Rome caught the in for like 15 yards). So, he wasn't hurt (maybe butthurt) he just quit mid play.

What is your guys opinion on this one?

He stepped out of bounds so he couldn't be the first to touch the ball. Some fans are saying it was smart to walk off the field so as not to confuse Caleb. Other wish he had stayed on to block, but Caleb wouldn't know that he couldn't throw him the ball and faced a potential penalty if he had. But it's easy to just say that he quit on the play and the team. However, I don't believe he has faced any consequence whatsoever. So it leads me to believe the coaches think he did the right thing.

Then again the coaches suck.

He said he was actually hurt yesterday, but as you said he got in there for the next play. I think it was a combination of frustration and injury.

Plus stepping out of bounds thereby, making him an ineligible receiver.

I don’t read much into it. You can tweak an ankle mid play as going out of bounds and realize you are fine for next play. Or you could quit on play going out of bounds.

the bigger issue is DJ and Kmet not being utilized is a regularly occurring theme with this offense. Whether that is OC or QB related doesn’t matter. Caleb obviously bonded with Keenan Allen before anybody else on this team but it’s on the OC and QB to put the ball in the hands of better players.
