Week 10 - Patriots (2-7) at Bears (4-4) - Noon on FOX

Ultimately, I still do think the doomerism from Bears fandom is premature and unnecessary. Even if they just get waxed down the stretch, provided there isn't a devastating injury or total collapse in Caleb's play (and even with his slight dip the last few weeks, I'm still pleased with his progression), the team is on an upward trajectory. 🤷‍♂️

It’s not premature when there has been plenty of evidence for 3 years that Eberflus isn’t the guy. I mean, there was very little hope when they hired a coordinator off a mediocre organization that he would ever be the guy. The team quit on multiple occasions in 2022. That Giants game in particular was a master class in giving a game away. They blew a bunch of winnable games in 2023. His coaching staff imploded last year. He hired the most generic OC possible who’d never been a part of successfully developing a young qb. He lost the Commanders game. And his team quit in Arizona.

This isn’t a new thing. It’s been building

I'm not particularly convinced that "losing a game late that it looked like you were going to win" is any more on the head coach than any other type of losing

Unfortunately for him, he's done all types of losing.

To be clear, when I say 'premature', I'm speaking more broadly than the Eberflus regime. Whether or not Eberflus is here next year, I'm mostly optimistic about where the teams going from a talent standpoint (I've mostly liked what Poles has done, though obviously, he also hires the *coaches* as well). If Poles has hit on Caleb, then a whole new world of opportunity opens up. There's obviously interplay between the coaches and Caleb's development, but I'm far from thinking that they're actively bungling things with him, though I do think they are not maximizing his development at this point.

Re: Eberflus, I mostly shove 2022 completely in a closet (I can't even recall if I watched that Giants game to be honest), but I do agree that at a certain point if you a blow crapload of 95% likely-to-win games, something about that is your doing. He hasn't impressed me with his coaching mid-game and up until recently, I thought the team was mostly on his side. So yeah, it all adds up, you're right that things have been brewing. But man, are we as Bears fans so reactive and impulsive. Games 1-3 was the sky falling, games 4-6 were (probably) outsized positivity and good vibes, and the last two games are back to armageddon. It's a lot of emotional whiplash.

at this point in his coaching career Matt Nagy was 28-10

Eberflus is 14-28

and everyone thinks the bears have more talent now then they did in 2020

They did a tear down rebuild for most of that.  He's 11-11 in his last 22

which was stupid because in the nfl, tear downs arent needed. but really, lets face it, Eberflus is in over his head. hes not a good coach and hes got arguably a much more talented roster than Nagy had. he shouldnt be blowing leads and he definitely at this point in his career should have at least lucked into a road win

Combined record of the teams that make up those 11 wins:  54-100.  Combined losses where the Bears had a 90+% win probability in the 4th quarter: 3 (and another one the week before that 11-11 stretch started 😩)

I know none of these really address your point, I just needed to add those statistics.

The actual 45 man game day roster this week won't be better than what Nagy had. The injuries are brutal.

Yes because the bears were famously 100% healthy every game of Matt nagy’s tenure

It wasn't a huge tear down. There was very little talent on the roster to begin with. Pace was so horrible at his job, he left the next GM very little to work with in talent, cash to spend or draft picks. Outside of trading Mack, I can't even remember the names of any other players that they jettisoned during the rebuild.

I just realized I’m going to “be able” to watch this game at a bar in the Philly area between kids hockey games.

keep an eye out for drunk parent stories in your local paper Monday

There is a lot of those in Philly, you'll have to do something to stand out.

Anyone notice what the Bengals did on their potential game winning two point attempt last night?  The Bears don't have the market cornered on offensive play calling ineptitude.  And yes, the Ravens committed multiple penalties on that play.

So if officials are going to treat a 2 point conversion the same way they treat a Hail Mary and simply ignore any and all penalties, it kinda seems like a bad idea to attempt them. I didn't actually see the play, so I'm just assuming your observations were correct.

What was wrong with the play call? I was not watching closely but looked to be a mismatch with a tight end on smaller db and a quick pass on the goaline that sailed on Burrow while there were half a dozen Ravens committing penalties.

I thought it was interesting to go for 2 in the first place with more than 30 seconds to go and Baltimore then only needing a fg in regulation to win. Seemed like damned if you do damned if you don’t when the opposing offense is scoring every single drive.

I think it’s silly to watch that game and come away thinking the play callers are equally as bad as the bears play caller.

I think it was mistake not going to Chase, who had single coverage, game is on the line, why not go to your best?

The play call isn’t made with assumption of single coverage on Chase. If there was single coverage on Chase it’s on the veteran pro bowl qb to recognize that matchup.

it’s not like they handed off to a guard or ran an option or some other silly bears nonsense. They called lots of plays that succeeded and scored lots of points but lost because the Ravens offense was unstoppable.

True enough, just appeared to me, with the game on the line, going to your best, regardless, was the correct option.

It’s Poles’ career; if he wants to play games keeping an obviously inferior coach in charge of developing a franchise QB it’s his neck on the block.

It’s not fun watching another implosion but we are almost 20 years removed from the last genuinely good Bears team so what’s another decade?

Eberflus will not be the Bears’ long term coach.  He’s already got failure written all over him.  Keeping him around is career suicide for Poles, but if I’m wrong I’ll gladly eat crow.  I don’t think I am.

I don't think he gets to make the final call on coaching decisions, at least not when the coach has 2+ years left on a contract.

I was kinda consoling myself after the Wash loss that at least if the Bears lose that relates to an arcane, silly harbinger that if Wash wins their last home game before an election, the incumbent party was going to win. (But actually, the rule has been broken for a while now, and now 3 out of the last 4 elections have gone the opposite way).

regardless, if the Bears manage to lose this game or look like dogshit and eke it out, I will feel confident we live in the Hell Dimension and I'm not allowed to feel good about anything.
