Spending $10M AAV MORE than Mookie Betts for Alex Bregman is, indeed, stupid.

Your giving Tom ammo with posts like this. Trading Mookie in the first place was the dumb part. But is it really stupid for the new Red Sox leadership group to sign a good player at a position of need if their owner is willing to go over the tax line? I wouldn't call that stupid, they've had a damn good offseason. Moral of the story, context matters for each team/move.

Giving a lunatic on a baseball message board "ammo" is of little concern to me.

why did Jed thank the Ricketts for allowing him to make the 4/120 offer? he made it sound like he really had to talk them into it

I think broadly at this level of player ownership is part of the convo.  I think too with Jed being in his walk year guaranteeing ~$90M past his current contract involves some asking for permission.

“Why would fans consider the reality of their team’s spending in deciding if a particular contract is a good idea” should not be a particularly difficult question to answer

How dare you acknowledge reality?!

Did not know where to put this:

Tim Britton at the Athletic thinks this is what it would take to extend Tucker

2025 extension projection: 11 years, $366 million

So probably not going to happen.

I saw that. If thats all it takes to extend him that contract should be in front of him right now. Ricketts is too cheap to do that type of deal though.

I think he gets north of $400 mil though

That extension kicking in for 2025, as unlikely as that is to play out, really means we're just using a lot of the extra cash lying around for this year and then calling it a long term deal of 10/$333 for his age 29-38 years. We were supposedly willing to pay $29m/year for Bregman's 31-34 years, and Tucker has shown every indication he's a better player, so I don't think it's too much of a stretch that they'd be willing to commit to that kind of money.

I am not sure Tucker would take that deal, but from the Cubs POV it is absolutely something they should do. Jed should be offering this right now if it could get him signed.

The goal of Ricketts isn't to be a great team and win the WS, he wants to spend just enough to be a competitive enough team every year to fill the seats and hopefully get into the playoffs and take their chances and hope to get lucky.  He's satisfied winning 85-90 games.

Signing a huge contract like Tucker is too risky for them, they think they can be competitive without committing all those dollars to one player.

But even at $33M a year for Tucker, after ‘26 they can still be under every year. That isnt that big a deal. They don’t have any real salary on the books. Even being  cheap SOB and running the team like a low budget team, he can be afforded. In 5 years $33M a year isn’t even going to be that big a deal. And he should still be worth it.

I think he'll get more than 33m AAV.  They didn't even bother looking at any of the TOR SP this winter on a team with only 2 above-average SP.  95% chance they don't extend or resign Tucker.

I will take a 20/1 bet on this

(so would you)

A fun "former top prospect coming off a bad season" for "former top prospect coming off a bad season" trade between Cleveland and Colorado. Tyler Freeman to Rockies for Nolan Jones (who was a Cleveland draft pick originally).

Jones was originally traded to Colorado from Cleveland. Interesting trade.
