Bet he makes the HOF within the next decade.

Sad though…dude horsefeathered up big time and destroyed a reputation of him as the ultimate bad ass baseball player. RIP

The Donald Trump of baseball, with that personality which made him so successful and also so tragic.

I remember watching 4,192 live - nationally broadcast, back in the day when there was 3 national channels.

To hell with Paul Giamatti's dad - Rose should have been in the HOF eventually in his own lifetime. A lifetime ban is the same type of sick revenge bloodlust that leads us to put teenagers in jail for life, or in the chair. It's just baseball.

All-time leader in games, ABs, PAs, and hits. Best ability is availability. And he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated a ton and despite - as he said - being ugly!

But he was a winner as a team player - Big Red Machine.

And he was a winner in baseball, that most individualistic of team sports: As Pete said in that great new documentary about him (Netflix?): 4,192 will never be broken.

RIP Charlie Hustle, what a life.

I believe its Max.  I watched the first episode awhile back but forgot about it...will have to go back and watch the rest now.

I hope he makes the HOF now.  It was always a joke that he wasn’t there.

RIP.  I’m just old enough to remember some of The Big Red Machine as a kid.

What a weird comparison. One inherited wealth, failed miserably repeatedly and was a national punchline for decades until a bunch of racist dickbags identified with his ignorance. The other was an accomplished athlete that threw it all away then spent decades as a national punchline.

For a long time I was leaning towards unbanning him and voting him into the HoF. And there for a while it was looking like MLB was too. He started broadcasting, Manfred was willing to talk with him, and then bam... story drops that not only did he bet on games, but he was also having sexual relationships with underage girls as young as 12. Nothing ever came of it because the statute of limitations had long since passed, but Rose tried to sue for defamation, later admitting to having sex with what he believed to be a 16 year old (probably to stop the digging), and settled his case.

Never will he see the HoF, and I'm all for the ban. I'd vote in Shoeless Joe before Rose. Death didn't earn Shoeless Joe any favors, neither should it earn Rose any favors.

The Baseball HOF voters are pretty set in their ways. We have legendary players who have been deceased for decades not in the HOF because they cheated. But who knows, voters who refuse to vote for players that cheated, will eventually pass away and new younger voters will replace them, without any issues with putting these players into.

In any case, RIP Pete Rose! He deserves to be acknowledged as one of the greats.

Edit: And I came to the replies after reading your post. I guess I should have read the other replies too. I didn’t know about the above. Yeah, that changes everything. 😡

Still think anyone and everyone should be in the HoF if the numbers merit it.

Like, banning Rose from working in and even around pro baseball because of the gambling? That always made total sense to me. But banning him from being in the Hall just seems petty. There's tons of scumbags in there.

I watched it thinking maybe it would make me a bit sympathetic toward him. I left disliking him even more.

I'm fine with Rose in the HOF now, but after Ron Santo had to wait until after he died for absolutely no reason at all, Rose and those who gambled on baseball when they knew they weren't allowed to can wait until after they die as far as I'm concerned.

The reason Santo had to wait is because he didn't receive enough votes. The reason Rose will never get in is because he signed an agreement to stop the investigation into his gambling that put him in the ineligible list which makes him "permanently ineligible" from being affiliated with MLB. In '91 the HoF voted that any player in the ineligible list will subsequently be banned from entering the HoF.

Rose decided that signing an agreement that banned him from baseball was worth more than fighting the accusations against him. He gambled on baseball, breaking the #1 rule posted in every clubhouse. He did this to himself. Why there is any sympathy for him is beyond me.

I think it's for a lot of people "banned from baseball" shouldn't include the Hall. It's ultimately just an MLB museum, so it's goofy to just pretend like certain people or events simply don't exist.

Like I said, ban people like him from working in and around pro ball, but if the numbers merit it then put them in the HoF.

Of course the whole voting system is beyond stupid and should be all but abolished, too, but that's a whole other thing.

People still talk about Shoeless Joe 100 years after his ban. Ultimately, Rose will have a longer lasting legacy being banned from baseball and the HoF.

I'm ambivalent. He's a scoundrel and a pedophile. There is no reason why some statements to the effect of he bet on baseball and was banned couldn't go on the plaque.

Same thing with all the PED guys. A simple statement, "he played in the Steroid Era." It should go on all the plaques of the guys from that era.

But, whatever.

On child rape allegations, Pete Rose said "Who cares what happened 50 years ago. You weren't even born, so you shouldn't be talking about it"  To honor the man's wishes, I won't factor in any part of Pete Rose's career before 1990.

The HOF isn't sacred, it's just a place for baseball fans to go and have fun remembering the past.  Don't take it too seriously.

He should be in the HOF on the merits, but he was a horsefeathers person and I don't care if he ever gets admitted.

Yup.

Rose wanted to be in the Hall of Fame because he wanted to exploit that fame in pursuit of monetary gain. And it would have degraded the prestige of MLB and the Hall of Fame to allow him to do so.

Schilling is in a similar boat. He wants to be in the Hall of Fame so he can charge more for autographs and so every ****** opinion he has is published "MLB Hall of Famer Curt Schilling says..." Allowing the Hall of Fame to be forcefully associated with his abhorrent politics would hurt the game.

Both of them should probably get in eventually. But posthumous induction is preferable.
