i used to play in a roller hockey league and the old guy on the team was the only one who hung dong in the locker room

Can't un-see that

Even though I don't follow hockey I still keep sports milestones on my periphery. Ovechkin is going to pass Gretzky pretty soon. It's pretty crazy how close their goals/games is.

Gretzky 894 goals in 1487 GP

Ovechkin 879 goals om 1464 GP

Pretty sure he's not gonna get 16 goals in his next 22 games but still that's wild.

At his pace this year (26 goals in 38 games) he’s would score 16 goals in 23 games which would be one goal better than Gretzky.

Pretty wild that at age 39 he’s scoring at a 56 goal pace. Gretzky scored 25 in 82 at 36, 23 in 82 at 37 and 9 in 70 at 38.

Gretzky - 1963 assists

Ovechkin - 711 assists

Gretzky - +520

Ovechkin - +63

Ovechkin is a goal scoring machine for sure, but he's as one-dimensional as it comes. The best one-dimensional player in NHL history, but still one-dimensional

he's averaged around 40 assists per 82 games, I don't know if I'd call him one dimensional. comparing his stats with Gretzky's isn't really fair

It’s fair when everybody is talking about him breaking Gretzky goal record

I'm saying it's not fair to point out the huge assist differences and not mention era. his goal totals are more impressive than Gretzky's, and the discrepancy in assists is less than it looks

You cannot compare them on one hand and say it’s not fair to compare them on the other

if they played in the same era, ovechkin would have more goals, but the assist difference would be smaller

4 nations is starting up and now this:

MONTREAL — The NHL and NHL Players’ Association have achieved their goal of establishing a calendar of international best-on-best events, announcing Wednesday that they’ve committed to reviving the World Cup of Hockey in February 2028.

That guarantees a regular cadence of best-on-best tournaments following this month’s 4 Nations Face-Off and the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan next February.

NHL was quite a bit different in the 80s. Gretzky played on an all time great team, not a good comparison.

I'd take Gretzky and Mario Lemieux before Ovechkin any day of the week and twice on Sunday.  In fact, back in the day, I often thought Lemieux was the better of Gretzky.

If Gretzky played today he's probably only score 50 points a season, but he is 64.

If you compare the players by era and how much better they were than the field there is no comparison.

Same with Jordan.

Same with Brown.

Same with Ruth.

Shea Theodore becomes the first casualty of the 4 Nations Face-Off. No timetable on how long he'll be out of action but I would be furious if I was a Golden Knights fan. They are dead even with Edmonton for the Pacific and he was having a career best season.

If I was a Golden Knights fan I’d sit there and be quiet so as not to anger the hockey gods for their incredibly fortuitous existence

he’s week to week and regular season standings don’t matter

The 4 Nations Face-Off doesn't matter. It’s an exhibition tournament. They are fortunate that the injury is only a minor inconvenience and he isn’t lost for any significant amount of time. Also a bad look for the league if any of these players do suffer a season ending injury. This isn’t the Olympics. They aren’t playing for anything meaningful.

The players are fully invested and by all accounts the fans are into it. I’m looking forward to the Canada USA game on Saturday and this is a great lead up to the inevitable return of World Cup play for nhl stars.

Of course they are. There is pride on the line.

It also appears that Theodore is going to be out longer than originally thought now.
