It’s been a depressing week in the hockey world but it’s September now and hockey hath returned. Youth teams are playing games, NHL teams are announcing their prospect showcase rosters. Training camps are on the horizon.

And it sounds like the PWHL has some major announcements schedule for Monday, as all their related Instagram pages are posting 9/9/2024. I’m assuming naming and jersey/logo news is forthcoming. Maybe schedule and arena info, as the New York team for one player in CT, Long Island and NJ last season.

I wish I was excited about this season, but between Gaudreau's passing and Laine's trade, the Jackets are once again going to be full of twenty year olds who can't score

I got so used to the PWHL nameless branding that it'll almost feel weird to move past it.

My NHL rooting interest is the Ducks, who are in theory on the upswing of a rebuild but the upswing never seems to come no matter how much young talent they add.  I'm hoping for a Zegras trade, he's overrated as hell.

Meanwhile, I'm back in net.  I have a friend who wanted to play adult rookie hockey and since he's trans, I didn't want him in a strange locker room not knowing anyone.  So every Saturday night I'm dragging my 42-year-old beachball body with abnormally stubby legs down to the rink and feeling guilty stopping people who can barely stand up on skates and whack at the puck at the same time.

There’s a slate of 3 games on ESPN and ESPN+ today, starting at 4:30 eastern through the 10 pm eastern slot.
Florida and Boston should be flying out of Miami immediately after their games. Thursday night has 9 games on the docket including the home opener of first place New Jersey after they stomped Buffalo in Prague.

The bruins fired Jim Montgomery after a slow start to the season. The Bruins currently occupy the 2nd wild card sport in the east. Pittsburgh and Detroit also off to slow starts and may be canning their head coaches. Will be interesting to see how many out last Richardson.

Not many worse things than a gaggle of bros hitting up the steakhouse after a round of golf:

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Former NHL player and TNT hockey analyst Paul Bissonnette was assaulted by several men during an altercation at a Scottsdale steakhouse Sunday night. Bissonnette posted a video on X on Monday describing the incident, saying he tried to intervene when one member of the group got in the manager’s face and started grabbing him after his friend was asked to leave. “You could tell by his face he (the manager) was a little shocked and surprised and stunned,” Bissonnette said. “It’s a family restaurant and there wasn’t anyone there who could maybe go help him out, so I went over, grabbed the guy and said, ‘Sir, if you’re going to assault and harass the staff, we’re going to have problems.’” Bissonnette said members of the group started throwing punches in a fight that started in the restaurant and spilled into the parking lot and to a nearby store. Bissonnette said he was kicked in the head three times and took several punches while landing several blows of his own against seven men. Scottsdale police arrested six men who are accused of assault and disorderly conduct.

Frustrating when your favorite pirate streaming site doesn't work.

Finally got a local feed to pick up CHSN, but most of the time every 4-5 seconds, the screen freezes for a split second and jumbles the picture and makes an annoying audio noise that drives my wife up the wall. I've resorted to setting up a tv next to our regular tv and we (I should say I)  watch Bulls/Blackhawks with no sound. The picture is fantastic minus each 4-5 second hiccup. Suppose I'll have to research how to fix that if any of these teams ever decide to become relevant.

The long awaited trade of disgruntled Canucks forwards has finally come to pass. Vancouver has reportedly traded JT miller to the rangers.

Somebody there had to mess around with someone else's wife, right? Something on that level must have happened.

You would think. But our girls 14U team had a similarly untenable rift between a couple girls that ended in one of them moving teams in the offseason and it was much more petty than an infidelity issue.

Miller is described as a “sandpaper” guy who is very vocally critical of teammates but also has issues on the defensive end, which is an odd combo. Being a hardass that doesn’t play 200 feet can’t work.

Things can never be nice for Columbus. Just as they really hit their stride and were a few points from climbing out of the wildcard, they get hit with the injuries. Team is beyond cursed.

So I've been playing goalie for the last couple of years.  I'm not very good, but it's adult rec hockey, you don't need to be good.  I've been playing all the way down in the lowest level because they play Saturday nights and I'd rather do that than get the 11 p.m. weeknight game slots.

On Saturday night I got cooked by the world's slowest shootout fake.  The guy came in so slow that I couldn't really build up any momentum to match his speed, and this being adult rookie I just assumed he was just gonna come in and shoot because most of them can't stickhandle enough to make any sort of move.

I assumed wrong. He faked the shot, I bit it harder than Marv Albert with a hooker, and he slowly skated around me and casually tapped it in the net like a gimme putt as I sprawled back after him.

As a reward for putting up with me over the years, I gift you all the rink video feed, complete with audio of the benches laughing at me.

That was somehow worse than the description. I applaud the effort to go out there though. Every game needs goalies

That's what I love about being a goalie. I could play 7 nights a week if I wanted, at all levels, from literal novices to pickups with former pros.

In theory I'm a bit too good for this novice league, but *checks video* apparently not.

Looked like Pat Maroon out there to me.

Great effort and I know exactly how you feel.  Whilst not the same sport, I play lacrosse in an old man's league, games are on Sunday mornings, 7:55 AM plus, I'm literally the oldest guy out there.  For added fun the facility is dimly lit, balls are yellow and quickly get dirty from the old turf.  Making them, for me, very hard to see, the only saving grace is I'm not in goal.  However, I miss nearly every feed to me on attack, which frustrates the hell out of me because, I usually have a good stick.
