I'm riding the Cubs wave with 3 straight parlay wins.  The only thing better than a miraculous comeback win is a miraculous comeback win that pays out on a bet that has already been written off as a lost cause.  The betting shall continue until the Cubs lose!

1. Time to do something about the 5th spot in the rotation.

Obviously a lot can happen between now and Tuesday or whatever, but when the earlier discussion about whether this was his last season was going on, I was thinking about something like winning the next 4 games before his next turn, and whether this was his last game. By then you'll have Kilian and Wicks as options and the extra September spots. You could bring up one and put Hendricks back in mop up mode. Or you could get real aggressive and bring up both and cut Kyle.

I'm a Cubs fan but I also root for these guys on an individual level when they put on the blue pinstripes. I am honestly super happy for Christian Bethancourt. He played the game of his career today.

Or just put Hendricks on an EXTREMELY short leash and have Wicks or Kilian ready to go early.

But with what we've seen already with Hoyer's handling of Neris and Smyly, I wouldn't be shocked if this was Hendricks' last game

ok well that makes up for blowing the 8-0 lead against the Padres.  Or the game where the Pirates walked like 6 runners home in the same inning and we still lost.

ok what the horsefeathers, I just saw the play-by-play.  I'm mad I missed this...what a wild game

Giving a hat tip to your 'the season is effectively over' post from earlier today for jinxing this one into existence.

Ok, be honest. Who watched this whole game?

Outside of the drive home and having to give a presentation (it was on in the background still) I was there the whole game.

What is the record runs scored in a 3 game series? I think 41 runs would be giving that series a run for it’s money. Wow.

Even more, what is the record for runs scored in a series where you are swept?

Yeah it might be. In the situation where we're still 'going for it' in 5 days, I don't think you let him take the ball. Kilian and Wicks are starters, you're doing them a disservice taking them out of their routine and making them go through a truncated warm up to enter into a dirty inning.

If we're out of it....at this point I'd still probably vote for bringing them both up, cutting Hendricks, and going 6 man rotation the rest of the year. We've done right by Hendricks in getting him to his 10 years (and he had that one solid stretch mid-season). He's not going to get to 100 wins this year. Free up the roster spot and keep the lines of communication open going into the offseason. Spring training try out, some sort of coaching role, etc.

Team record apparently is 48, but set back in the 1890s.  We did score 47 runs in a 3 game series against the Pirates back in 2019.  17-8, 14-1 and 16-6.  I definitely remember that one and assumed it was the record.

Also in 1998 the Cubs and Brewers had a series where both teams scored double digits in all 3 games.  Didnt set any scoring records but I always thought that was a fun factoid as I believe its still the only time that's happened.  13-11 Brewers on Friday, 15-12 Cubs on Saturday and 11-10 Cubs on Sunday.  This is also the series that Sammy hit numbers 60, 61 and 62

I just keep finding cool things about this game.  It's almost more fun finding out about this game like this instead of following it the whole time although I'm 99.997% sure I'm just saying that because I'm mad I missed it.

PCA going 4-4 with 4 runs scored

Bethancourt with 7 RBIs

Paredes even got a hit!

The Cubs went from their catchers basically being a black hole on offense and on defense to all the sudden being the strongest part of the team.

In one of those 'you can't predict baseball' things, the Cubs 41 runs in a 3 game stretch is the most in baseball this year. Taking the lead from a similar offensive juggernaut, the Oakland As.

PCA has reached base 4+ times in a game 3 times in his last 7 games. He also has a walk in 3 straight games and 5 in his last 6. Talk about finding a comfort level.

Yeah, this doesn't just feel like a hot streak.  He's obviously not going to OPS 1.500 or whatever he has over the last week but between the approach and how many hard hit balls we've seen, it looks sustainable to a degree.
