I look forward to an off-season of being told that they're a catcher away from being the greatest team of all time.

I looked at their career fWAR. Schwarber is about 0.8 short of Pederson in one fewer season. This year Schwarber is a 3.0 vs. Joc's 2.6. They're, roughly, even but I don't feel the same about them.

Joc didn't do jack while with the cubs

Jed will "try" to improve the team, it won't be a real attempt though, he'll sign some middle tier FA's as we hope for the best.

The only thing the Cubs needed to against Cleveland was not get swept. So what do the Cubs do? They get swept. August 14, 2024, the Cubs season has ended, imo.

I'm sure you meant to say June 14th, 2024.

Hey, they tried,  they got to 1 game under 500 🤷‍♂️

Just like last year, after hitting rock bottom they crawled to within 1 game of .500 only to go on another slide. If you’ll recall that was during the London trip where the Cubs won the first game to get to 1 under, had an early 3+ run lead in the 2nd game but gave up a big inning after a bad error and lost.

Hey wouldn’t you know the Cubs also had an early lead on Monday and also gave up a big inning after a bad error and lost.

This season really does mirror last year in so many ways. The only problem is the Cubs were doing all that horsefeathers last year in June, not August.  Maybe since they are behind schedule compared to last year they can now go on their hot streak and steal a playoff spot and skip the whole part where they have a historic collapse to miss the playoffs.

Though it means little to the Cubs with Paredes now manning 3B, but Bregman has really turned his season around. He's up to a 117 wRC+ and 3.2 fWAR. Since July 1st, 160 PAs, he has posted a .297/.350/.561 line good for a 156 wRC+. If he keeps rolling through the rest of the regular season he is going to get a near 200M contract and he wont take a single AB of that contract before he turns 31.

At that cost, it would have to be a very long deal.

Not sure about across the league, but definitely with many here who always wants to replace him and acts like it would be easy to do.

It feels like our fan base has one of two opinions on Happ.  Fans that think he's better than he is, and fans that think he's worse than he is.   The fact is, that's he's a solid starter that just about every team would like to have in their lineup.

Well, at least the Cardinals, playing like the crap team they are, will be under .500 soon.

It's a great year for the Cubs because the White Sox suck, and the Cardinals will be under .500.  Meanwhile "Wait until next year".

Swept. Cleveland is good

Are they though?

When you look at what they have, do you say that’s a really good team?

They're having one of seasons where everything they touch turns to gold, I do believe the clock will strike midnight on them in the playoffs.

30M a year for 6 years sounds completely reasonable again.

Personally, I wouldn't sign a 31 year old third baseman for 6 years.  Especially at that cost.  He's just not a 30 million dollar player.  Maybe somebody gives it to him.

I'm looking forward to Spotrac's market values to come out on FA's.  As far as FA signings go, players usually sign for over their MV due to the bidding process.

I think that 5/150 sounds about right for Bregman's next deal.

EDIT:  I just checked for the hell of it, and they have a lot of market values posted.  FA signings are typically up to 25% over MV.

They have Bregman's market value at 4/90.5, and 22.6 AAV

Well actually you showed 3 opinions on him. The two you mentioned and then yours. And I agree with yours. Solid ball player worth what he is being paid and can fit on any team. 😀

Exactly this!!  But the fans I speak to either think he sucks, or he's great.  He's neither.  He's just a solid player.

Happ is solid. On a competitive team he's a guy who should probably be your 4th best hitter. On a really good offense maybe your 5th best hitter.

I was a little skeptical initially but I think that's probably right. Next year you could probably expect/rely on Busch and Suzuki putting up better offensive numbers. It wouldn't be significantly better, but it would be offset a little by generally expecting Belli and Paredes to put up similar production to Happ. Throw an elite bat on top of all of that (and league average offense from Nico and Dansby)... I don't know. It seems like plenty. But getting more than a little discouraged at the results.
