People very rarely use boys even in those circumsrances. And it's also almost never used in a infantalizing type of way.

Putting down women athletes with girls terminology is definitely a common thing. People can either try and avoid that association by avoiding it or be willfully or unintentionally ignorant to it.  But it's really not comparable even if it seems like it would be in a text book comparison.

Language evolves too and it shouldn't bother people to change with it, even when it feels illogical or inconsistent.

I understand that language evolves, but too often the overly PC crowd want to attach a problem where one doesn't exist. I follow Haleigh Washington on Instagram. She refers to herself as a "Colorado kid". Is she infantilizing herself? Words are not inherently disrespectful.

The words “overly PC” are inherently disrespectful

Tangentially related, I have to be careful (as a university professor) to not call the students "kids". They're all adults

When you're tenured you get to call them "whippersnappers".

Most wholesome moment of the Olympics goes to Tara Davis-Woodhall and her husband Hunter. They are couples goals.

Personally I do find the girl/guy/boy language awkward at best. If someone says "a girl I work with" a lot of people find that language acceptable (though I defer to woman in these examples). Most though would probably find it extremely awkward to say "a boy I work with" because we have a informal gendered term "guy" for adult men that doesn't play double duty of referring to children too. I guess lady could/should fill that role, but people use that with a lot less frequency for whatever reason. Of course you can always just go with non gendered "my co-worker" in this example, but the most common language of girl/guy is clearly a unique standard.

This paragraph really hit home to me.

I play in a rec softball league through work in the summer and I get our team organized each week (send out invites, make sure we have enough players, etc). The first couple years I would generally use the term girls, mainly because I would also use the term guys. At some point I thought that girls just seemed to weird to say when referring to adult women. Can't remember what made me think about it but that's irrelevant. So I started to make sure I would just go with the terms male and female rather than guy and girl.

I never really thought about why saying girl when referring to adult women sounded weird but saying guy when referring to adult men didn't. But what you said in this paragraph, in terms of boy-girl and guy-girl, nailed it. Terms like lady or gal sound just as weird to say, if not weirder, than girl. So men and women it is then.

It's not PC. Don't try to hide behind that. It's about respecting the person and in this case athletes. They are not in high school.

lol, you can't unsay what's been said or attempt to maneuver yourself out of this like Otter in Animal House.

Learn a lesson and move on.

All I really want is (Women!)
And in the morning it’s (Women!)
‘Cause in the evening it’s (Women!)

I don't know the reference.

I'm not concerned with the self-righteousness of the language police.
