Spoilered if you don't want to know wrestling results, because they'll prob show the match on primetime tonight.

Spoiler

US Women's Wrestling picks up a gold.  Amit just crushed everyone the entire tournament, and at only 20 years old.  Ladies go for another gold tomorrow, and I like her chances, too.

So seems like we're finally past the point of foreigners complaining about how US media sorts the medal count.

USA USA 🦅🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸

Why? Do other countries do it ascending or something?

Or are they just complaining about the "If you're not first, you're last" method of sorting based on gold medals?

US media usually does total medal count descending and rest of the world does gold medal count descending.

And every year* like clockwork one track and field catches up to like badminton and table tennis, it's moot, they're on top lol.

*except 2008 where China got the typical home town boost and edged US in golds.

That's that I get for looking at Google for the results. Yeah, we're first anyway at this point.

But it's a stupid complaint - of course every country is going to sort it in the most favorable way to themselves.

Blanka Vas was the one that countered and brought them to within a couple of bike lenghts - when she signalled for one of the others to take over to close the remaining gap, Vos and Kopecky just looked at eachother, and Faulkner was away. Again, smart racing from her and a well deserved gold.

I'm not buying that with the gold medal on the line they chose not to chase. They couldn't.

Haters looking for the lamest version of American exceptionalism attitude to complain about (when there are so many other good examples!)

I was thinking about this and I guess I find I usually root for the American only because I don't know anything about any of the athletes so have to go on something. But some of them seem like they aren't very likeable so a great performance always trumps the nationality of the winner for me

Big semi-final match coming up for women's volleyball against Brazil. They've met in the gold medal match in each of the last three Olympics. American girls got the best of them in Tokyo. Our girls haven't been dominate this year, but they've been resilient.

The Indian woman that the American is (edit: was) wrestling in the finals has a pretty wild, and rootable, story:

Lost that tough 5 setter vs. Poland, thought they had them after going up 2-1.  Hopefully, as you said, they can bounce back vs. Brazil.

"Girls" in this instance is perfectly acceptable in its informal use. Per the Oxford definition, "women who mix socially or belong to a particular group, team, or profession." Ex., "I look forward to having lunch with the girls."

We use "boys" in the same manner when talking informally about adult men. "I'm playing golf with the boys tomorrow."

That's not how cycling works - they chose to play a game of chicken hoping the other would make the effort to close the final gap knowing that the energy that would take could be costly in the subsequent sprint. Faulkner was smart enough to know those two playing that game was a distinct possibility, attacked at the right moment and was justly rewarded.

dude, I know how cycling works. I don't agree with you. Kopecky was spent from chasing back. She didn't have the legs. Vos was spent from being out front. They were not playing cat and mouse for silver.

boys have not been oppressed and repressed for thousands of years. calling women girls is never acceotable. it's a way to trivialize them and perpetuates misogyny.

Can I use the term "ladies?"

As long as you use “hey” before and “get funky! *cowbell*” after.

The term "girls" isn't inherently derogative. In this context, it's just informal. It is perfectly acceptable when used in the appropriate context. Women use the term in the same way and far more often than men.

Jordan Chiles has referred to herself as "that girl" at these Olympics. Other uses that come to mind include "cowgirl", "fan girl", "hot girl summer", "girl power". Used in it's correct context, as I did, it isn't trivializing or perpetuating anything.

Are you a woman?  No?  Then you should stop using that term.  It's disrespectful at best and offensive at worst.

Are you a woman? If not, I'll defer to them to decide what they find disrespectful and offensive or not.

You've been told the same thing by multiple people now.  Maybe you're the problem here.
