Not only will the injury likely end Walker's season, it could end his tenure with the Cubs. He will not get the plate appearances to guarantee his option, so I'm not sure if he would be brought back. This is a sad day, for us and Walker.

Right you are Vance. I'm no MD but after looking at the reply several times yesterday it looked to me like a hyper-extension. Usually that does not mean torn ligaments. MCL and ACL tears usually come fron twisting movements. However, I hyper-extension if it is bad enough could put him out for seveal months (if not the entire season). I know Hariston had a good spring but to me he doesn't have the skills of Walker. That said I hope he can ignite the offense at the top of the order and at the very least makes the line up more ballanced at the top (R,L,R,R,L).

I'm no MD, either, but I HAVE experienced the joys of a severly hyperextended joint. I had it happen to my elbow when I was in college. I think it took a month before the swelling went down enough that I could start physical therapy, and it took another four or five weeks of PT before my elbow felt strong enough to be back to "normal." Of course, I wasn't nearly as conditioned as a professional athlete, and I had other responsibilities to tend to besides getting strong enough to get back on the field.

If nothing's torn, and he doesn't need surgery, I expect he'll be back this year, but it'll be several weeks.

I would guess that a knee takes a whole lot longer to heel than an elbow with the same injury.

I'm sure you're right. I still don't expect it to be season-ending, that's all.

Bruce Levine was just on ESPN 1000 talking about Walker. He said Walker's knee is sprained, but he won't need surgery. Said he would miss about a month. Fontenot would be called up to take his spot. Good news. A lot better than we thought.

Out a month is a lot better than out a season. Get well soon, Todd.

It's still a tough loss, especially with Hairston's HR swing that he had in Mesa and the wind at Wrigley, but it's a sigh of relief that they think he'll only miss a month. Hopefully Dusty can sit down Jerry and remind him once again that his job is to get on base.

On the bright side, we may finally see some stolen bases with Hairston and Patterson at the top of the order. Corey's not the guy you want swinging away on a hit and run all that often.

The Fontenot call-up surprises me a bit.

It's a shame because Walker was playing so well for us. Good thing we have Hairston though. He will fit right in. Maybe see what Fontenot can do at the major league level as well.

*whew* Good news indeed. While seeing it on replay, it looked really bad as his knee went inward by the Lee's slide. Thankfully it's just a sprain, which he'll be back soon.

Get well soon Walker.

Hey Cheeshead - did you do that on Excel? :-P

Good news about Walker, but I'm not convinced yet until I hear from more than Bruce Levine. I'd like to hear an official statement from the Cubs and maybe an interview with Walker first.

Too bad Dubois doesn't play 2nd :-(

According to the press conference with the trainer, Walker has a moderate sprain of his MCL but the other ligament in his knee and the meniscus were not damaged at all. The swelling should go down in a week to ten days and he should be back in four to six weeks, maybe a bit longer.

Thanks for the more detailed update!

That's about the best news we could've hoped for. :)

Now, I once heard that all sprains were actually "tears", but just not severe. Does anybody know if that is accurate?

That's what my wife the physical therapist has told me.

Tim - thanks for the info. from your wife - I had also heard that about sprains.

Another term you hear quite often is a "pulled hamstring" - it's also a tear, just a difference in severity. I had a "pull" last year and got back out on it too soon and ended up tearing it further - to the point where the entire back of my thigh from my butt to the back of my knee was black and blue from all the blood.

I hope the recent news about Walker is indeed true and as someone else said, it's about the best we could hope for. The trainer appears to be already earning his keep unfortunately.

I found that out first hand over spring break. I mostly tore a ligament in my ankle and it was diagnosed as a sprain. It's still painful at times and swollen and that was three weeks ago. Of course, Todd may be a little more motivated to rehab that knee than I am my ankle.
