Well HOF Peter Gammons (:smokin:) claimed on Sportscenter last night that Dusty was pretty confidenant that both Prior and Would would be ready for the start of the season but that he would just move his rotation to have Z start the opener and Wood ready for the home opener

Yeah, last season they were also confident that Wood and Prior wouldn't miss much time. I'll believe it when I see it.

Exactly. When the Umpire says "Play Ball!" and Kerry *actually* throws a pitch in game, then he's back. Until then, he's out indefinitely. I don't even want to hear a time-line from the Cubs.

Same for Prior.

The bottom line on espn is scrolling that Wood and Prior are each out for the season opening series, which isn't really news since Dusty said he was messing with the rotation a couple days ago.

But when I read it, I saw Wood and Prior are each out for the season and then I screamed and passed out on the floor.

PHOENIX -- You can scratch Kerry Wood and Mark Prior from the Cubs' season-opening series April 4-6 in Arizona. That's all the disaster-control experts are willing to concede now.

But while manager Dusty Baker said Thursday that neither one will start a game in that kickoff series against the Diamondbacks, Wood might make his season debut in the opening home series April 8-10 at Wrigley Field against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Article contains some positive comments on Kerry's progress, but only depressing stuff about Mark's.

According to Cubs.com, Prior threw today and still feels a little discomfort and Wood could throw a simulated game tomorrow.

Chicago Cubs pitcher Mark Prior was able to play catch Friday, and Kerry Wood may throw a simulated game Saturday.

Prior, bothered by inflammation in his right elbow, threw long toss in Mesa, and could be on the mound in a few days. He still has some mild discomfort in his elbow, Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.

Wood, who has bursitis in his right shoulder, played catch on Friday and did some pitcher's fielding drills.

I think Wood is now likely to pitch the home opener, but I think Prior could miss the first week to ten days of the season.

So to track this, at first Prior was out 7-10 days and Wood a few days. Now Prior is estimated to miss the first week of the season, Wood the first series of the season.

Hopefully they'll be back by June

Wood threw (a simulated game, I believe) today and said he felt great. Actually, he said he felt better than he did before the injury. Prior is still feeling a little discomfort, but the anti-inflammatories are supposedly doing their thing.

I bet Wood will throw the home opener. I'm not so optimistic about Prior's return.

Kerry threw 48 pitches in the simulated game and threw fastballs, sliders, and changeups. Rothschild was impressed.

Prior threw on flat ground and felt better, too.

This was today, correct (sorry, I'm too lazy to look it up)?

Yeah, as was reported on WGN Radio. As you may have noticed, Larry is in Mesa today with Dusty instead of traveling to the other game so he could monitor the throwing sessions before the game.

Can they do their simulated games indoors? I ask because it was damp, rainy and in the 40s and 50s this morning in Arizona, so not the best weather to pitch in when you're recovering from an injury.

I'm not sure if those can be thrown indoors. It's possible they could put the mound under a tent or something, though.

Sunday's update:

Prior threw off the mound today and "felt pretty good." He was "almost pain free," according to Dusty. Kerry feels fine.

Prior threw 10-12 pitches from a mound on Sunday.

Link.

Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said Prior threw 10-12 pitches off the mound at HoHoKam Park in Mesa. Prior had not been on the mound since his one Cactus League start.

"He felt pretty good," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said of Prior.

And the reports on Wood are still positive.

There's good news for Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood, who threw a simulated game on Saturday. Wood, who has been sidelined with bursitis in his right shoulder, had no problems on Sunday. His shoulder tightened up in his start March 9. He is scheduled to throw on the side Monday.

"He didn't say anything [about pain or problems] and had a smile on his face," Baker said of Wood.

How 'bout a Scott Williamson update:

Cubs.com"]Congratulations: Scott Williamson was back with the Cubs on Monday and threw off the mound for the first time in front of pitching coach Larry Rothschild. Williamson had returned home to be with his wife, Lisa, who delivered the couple's second child.

"She had the baby nine days early and that's why I had to go home," Williamson said. "I was planning on leaving [March 8 or 9], and she had the baby on [March 1]. She called me up and said, 'I'm going into labor so you might want to come home.' I flew home that day."

Baby Cambrie arrived, but Lisa had some complications so Williamson stayed home and was able to continue his rehab indoors in Cincinnati. He threw off a mound for the first time on Friday.

"I'm only throwing 50 percent, so it's not like it's real hard anyways," he said.

Williamson is coming back from surgery on his right elbow and was not expected to be ready until late in the 2005 season. He was happy to be making progress.

"I'm pretty excited about [throwing off the mound]," he said.

I suggest we move this thread to rivalries cos it seems that injuries will be our enemy again this year.

Saw this on ESPN in the article about Borowski. At least there is some good news.

The Cubs did get good news on another pitching front. Right-hander Kerry Wood could take the mound Thursday or Friday, Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild told the Chicago Sun-Times.

With a positive outing, Wood would make another start next week and be prepared to start in the first week of the season.

Some more good injury news today:

AP"]Notes: Prior said he threw "30 or so" pitches from a mound and "felt fine." Prior has not pitched since March 10, when he made his Cactus League debut and pitched three innings against the Seattle Mariners. Afterward, Prior reported discomfort in his right elbow. Tests revealed inflammation and irritation in the elbow and around the ulnar nerve. Prior believed he would pitch in another game this spring. The Cubs hope Prior will be ready to pitch in a regular-season game by the middle of April. Baker said that Wood will start Thursday in Mesa against the Athletics. Wood has not pitched since March 9, when he took himself out of his start against Texas, complaining of tightness in his right shoulder. Test revealed bursitis in the shoulder and inflammation around the rotator cuff. Wood is 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA this spring.

Cubs.com"]Cubs manager Dusty Baker said Wood could throw three innings on Thursday against Oakland.

"We'll see how many pitches he throws," Baker said. "It depends on if he has an easy three, and then maybe stretch him to four. We'll go by how he looks and how sharp he looks and what kind of performance he's having."

Wood threw in the bullpen on Tuesday to tune up for the outing. Mark Prior also threw in the pen and had a good session. The right-hander, who has pitched in one Cactus League game March 10, threw 30 pitches in the bullpen.

"He had good velocity with his fastball, good life on it," Baker said. "Both of them looked pretty good. I'd say right now Woody's ahead."

.......................

"I felt pretty good," Prior said. "My arm feels good, strength-wise. The location was pretty good, too."

"There's progress," Cubs trainer Mark O'Neal said. "It's definitely improving. We're just going to advance him very slowly and we're being extremely cautious with it right now."

Cubs.com"]Welcome back: Dave Hansen rejoined the Cubs on Tuesday. He had his appendix removed in an emergency procedure.

"I didn't know what to expect," Hansen said. "I'd never been through anything like that. As soon as we went to the hospital, within an hour or so they had me in surgery. I was ready to go back to the hotel."

He was able to hit in the cage on Tuesday and will ease back into workouts. He's not going to miss his appendix.

"It does nothing," Hansen said. "From my understanding, it does nothing except catch bacteria."

No word on when he'll be able to get back on the field.
