On the plus side, Frank Thomas is going to be out much longer than expected, at least till mid-June, and will have to have at least 100 minor league at bats before they bring him up.

how is that a plus?

Are you kidding me??

I don't think he is... I dunno. I don't really care about the White Sox... but I take pride in the fact that we're not bitter about the rivalry like they are. They're Chicago's red-headed step-child. They hate us. I don't really see myself or most Cubs fans hating the Sox or even caring about them though.

For me, the rivalry is like, "Meh."

If they win, good for them. Just as long as we win when we play them.

I don't really care about them that much but still like to seem them lose and have bad things happen to their team when possible.

Judging by the quotes from the Cubs, sounds like they expect Walker to be out for a very long time (torn ligament, in other words). I hope that's not the case - he's a fantastic competitor, his bat will be sorely missed, and Hairston's elevation will severely weaken the bench. But at least it'll likely mean Corey out of the leadoff spot.

I understand why Rusch didn't hit Lee - you risk a wild pitch, and moving the winning run to third. But the Cubs better plunk him the next time we see the Brewers.

:x

That really sucks!!

What quotes from the Cubs?

BTW, over at that OTHER board, the Brewers trolls think it was a perfectly clean slide... riiggght

As I said in the game thread, I'm glad that Rusch didn't hit him. I want someone like Wood to smack him with a fastball. It's a shame Farnsworth is gone, he could have hit Lee with a 100 mph heater and then tackled Carlos for good measure.

Looks like a knee sprain for Walker

Walker sprained his left knee in a collision at second base in the 10th inning of Sunday's 6-5, 12-inning win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Walker was taken to a local hospital for an MRI scan.

The Cubs will not know the extent of Walker's injury until they have a chance to go over the test results, athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said.

"We need to know the exact, definite diagnosis before we can have any timeframe," O'Neal said.

Jerry Hairston will likely start on Monday at second base for the Cubs. He cringed when he saw Walker limp off.

Hairston can hit second, leave Corey in the leadoff position. Let's just leave him in one spot with the whole year for once. Enough of this yo-yoing him up and down in the order.

I doubt it will happen. Dusty seems intent on batting Hairy 1 and Corey 2 when they're both in the lineup.

Another quote from the same article:
The Chicago Cubs won Sunday's game, but they may have lost second baseman Todd Walker for an extended stretch.
Even the Cubs are saying he might be out for an extended period. I know the official report is sprained knee, but I believe that was also the initial report on Patterson's injury. Doesn't sound good. At least it's at a position with a good replacement, but somebody would then have to come up and fill the void on the bench. Would this be Ben Grieve's ticket back to the majors, I wonder?

Grieve would be my choice. He'd give us a left bat off the bench.

no, i'm not.

i think it's pretty sick that you find enjoyment out of his injury, though. pretty pathetic.

As a hitter off the bench, Grieve wouldn't be a bad choice. My only problem would be is that Neifi and Macias would be the immediate backup options at 2B...and that's not a good thing. I'd rather not see Macias attempting to turn double plays, thanks. Neifi I could live with, but it'd pain me to see him in the lineup this often.

It's possible Cedeno, Lewis, or Fontenot gets called up, but it mostly depends on what the Cubs value.

...yeah, it'll be Grieve.

The Cubs will need an IF. That would leave only 2 IF backups. My guess is Cedeno, because Lewis is coming off an injury and he has a huge defensive edge on Fontenot. If Todd goes on the DL, it would also be a good time to get Grieve on the 40-man, get a LH bat off the bench and gets rid of the unnecessary 12th pitcher.

(prayer) Please don't let Todd Walker be hurt for more than 3 days (prayer)

According to the Trib article, that prospect sounds very weak at best

But the Cubs' clubhouse was subdued after second baseman Todd Walker was hospitalized with what could be serious ligament damage in his left knee after a 10th-ininng collision at second base.

Test results showing the extent of the injury to Walker are expected before Monday's game against San Diego, but he is not expected in his customary second spot in the lineup for some time.

I have a feeling we'll be seeing an article that says "WALKER OUT FOR SEASON" tomorrow...

Ugh... it's Corey all over again, except it's much earlier in the season. Hendry made it work in 2003; can he do it again?

Yeah, this has the feeling of Corey in 03. :( The Cubs have a very capable second baseman, the only worry in regards to Jerry Hairston Jr. is that he is injury prone.

I knew Carlos Lee was a Cub-killer, but this is pathetic.

I swear between the Cubs and the Bulls lately, it seems like they are trying to outdo themselves on a daily basis.

I know all the Cubs said it looked like a clean slide, but looking at the replay it sorta looks like Carlos went for Walker's knee.

Anyway, at least the Cubs aren't giving us any of this "oh he'll be fine" B.S. If the guy's out, then just tell us he's out.

Looks like Hairston gets his shot much earlier than anyone expected.

If Walker is out for an extended time, they can 60-day DL him to get Grieve on the 40-man and bring him up, that move makes the most sense. If Walker is only 15-day DL'd though, there's no room for Grieve unless you waive someone, and I don't see that happening. They COULD put Borowski on the 60-day, IF the 60-day DL can be back-dated into spring training like 15-day DL stints can (re: Prior).

Anyone know the answer to this regarding the 60-day and Borowski?

Wellemeyer is sure to get optioned to Iowa with Prior coming off the DL. But with Walker now out, I see the Cubs (very) quickly going back to an 11-man staff to get another guy on the bench, even if Grieve comes up to replace Walker. Because Grieve's defense is so atrocious, you really need another OF on the bench, not an IF, so this suggests Kelton (who as we know, can play 3B or 1B in an emergency).

Given what Kelton showed the Cubs in Arizona, I've gotta believe they go to him before they'd bring up Fontenot.

PS to my above post--if they do go back to 11 pitchers, I think Ice Man's tough outing on Friday gets him a ticket back to Iowa. Bartosh is out of options, and he's the only other guy who conceivably could be on the bubble. No way does Wuertz go anywhere.

dkwg, I'm pretty sure the Cubs can backdate 60-day DL stints. Didn't the Cubs do that with Prior last season?
They did with Prior, and also I think with Gonzalez.

The Cubs still have 3 players that can play 2nd base so I don't really see the need for having to call up a kid if he isn't ready just to sit on the bench. If the injury puts Walker out for the season this gives Hairston a chance to seize the opportunity and if he doesn't it'll give the Cubs time to evaluate the 2 young second baseman and if they are not ready to make a deal by the trading deadline.

Let's hope that Walker is better than the Cubs think.
