Brendan Harris ?  Louis Montanez, Brooks Kieshwhatever, Hanks Boy, Brett Jackson, Gary Scott, Hee Sop Choi...wait... let me shift through another $1000 of worthless RC cards from back in the day for some more names.  Going back a little deeper - for some reason I always remember a write up in some mag that went something along the lines of "It's true the Cubs don't have very many legitimate prospects but when you have one as promising as Kevin Roberson it doesn't matter." LMFAO

It was Brendan Harris, nice pull.

Roberson was a decent source of power in the 94 sega baseball game I had

Who was the guy who Baseball Prospectus loved and put a Pujols comp on.  I can't remember his name now.

Brendan Harris?

Felix Pie and Bobby Hill were the two guys I was hoping they would become something. But at least Eric Hinske became a useful player.

Brian Dopirak, Ryan Harvey and Josh Vitters. The bash brothers of nothing. At leas Ryan Harvey is smashing softballs, so....that's something I guess.

Maybe I’m being too optimistic (something I’m not known for), but I think we may be in opposite situation now. They have so many good prospects at almost every position. The depth is amazing.

For example, the last time I saw Pablo Aliendo in person last April he looked like a skinny teenager. This spring he looks like he put 20 pounds of muscle on and looks like a legitimate big league catcher. He did a great job behind the plate yesterday stealing some strikes.

im so impressed with their development team.

There was *zero* doubt in my mind that Bobby Hill was going to be a .380 OBP top-of-the-lineup staple for a decade. I was livid that we traded him for a bad defensive 3b with a .311 OBP.

Ha I was pretty ok with the trade but I also felt at the time that we were trading away our future All-Star second baseman. Oops.

Similarly, I was absolutely devastated that we traded aforementioned Brendan Harris in the Nomar deal. Thrilled we got Nomar, pissed at what we gave up. Again, oops. Harris did have a couple nice seasons later for the Devil Rays. And we got Murton in that deal too!

Hee-Sop Choi was the guy I figured was absolutely can't miss.

He might've been pre-concussion

The first prospect I fell in love with was Kevin Orie. I remember that one spring where he was popping off and they had an interview with one of the coaches on wgn and he said "it's about time we had a rookie of the year."

Orie was supposed to be "the guy" at third that the cubs finally had long term there since Santo

And here we are raving about all of the can't miss prospects in 2024.  🤣

I think "can't miss prospects" has been driven out of the lexicon.

Rather, there's a lot more focus now on "high floor" prospects, "MLB-ready" prospects, and "low risk" prospects (with the implicit caveat that that last category is referring to relative risk, rather than absolute risk.)

I have to admit Orie was rated higher than I thought. But I never thought of him as “the guy” to make us forget Santo.

Was he? Was Orie ever a top 50 prospect in baseball? I don’t remember that. He was a guy who had a decent spring and made the team. Then had an ok year for a rookie. That was about it. I do not recall him ever being “the guy” who was going to make us all forget Santo.

I cringe when I hear Kevin Orie.

He messed up Kerry Woods big game.

I didn't say he was supposed to make them forget Santo.

I just remember the local sports media at the time and even Harry and Stone were all excited with him in 96 and 97 when he was in minors and his rookie year and they kept mentioning him as the kid who can finally be the one to take over 3B cause they haven't had a set 3Bmen since Santo..

He was supposed to be their long awaited answer to 3B

Harry excited?

The only time I remember Harry being excited is when he announced Marla Collins without pants on today

They had one who won two batting titles and PK Wrigley sent him off for the audacity of asking for a raise and maybe also because he was black.
